New Year, new progress!

Continued with some basecoats on my Legio B&C Intercessor squad. Blacks have been highlighted with Incubi Darkness, bone has three coats of Morghast Bone and so far one coat of Mephiston red has been put down.

A terrible photo but it does mark some progress with the B&C Intercessors, finishing up on the Bladeguard and continuing with the bikes. Progress is progress. Intercessors are nearly ready for washes.

Edit: upon review, once I have finished all these off I will have approx. 770pts of the FoL. Enough for two variants of a 500pt force. My local FLGS runs occasional 500pt 40k game nights. Might I get a game in before the end of 10th ed?

Musings

I've read that the bikes' assembly is infamously bad. That's one of the main reasons I'm still not getting any. Your experience shows that this indeed is the case. Overall, great progress. It's nice to see more of your marines with that absolutely cool livery. As for Legio Intercessors, they're looking crisp, too. And I wholeheartedly approve the use of the Maltese cross on the knee pads.

Thank you! @Brother Christopher I had hoped to have some rook/castle decals as the kneepad decoration, a campaign badge for my FoL representing the liberation of a city.

I'd used the cross on a tilting shield for one of my previous models and liked the effect so now it is 'canon'.

As for the bikes, they were some of the first models I bought when I got back into the hobby. Now I know why they were cheap on eBay! I wouldn't recommend them and I'm not relishing building the remaining three plus Chaplain I have in my future.

I have attempted pushing my highlighting a stage further than normal.

I think I need to return to Mars for an upgrade to my ocular implants. The servos on the digits could do with replacing too, getting some backlash on the gearing.

Second photo

I think that you're a bit too hard on yourself. Martian interventions don't appear to be necessary ;) Remember, your flesh is not weak! The highlights are looking good, particularly the green. The black looks a bit worse, with some slightly blotchy patches on the collar and belt, but I'd assume that's the photo exaggerating things. And nothing you can't 'fix' - I find it easier to revisit and refine lines than trying to get them perfect the first time around.

Keep up the good work!

The completed Intercessors are documented in the Legio challenge thread and have even got a folder in the Gallery - a first for me! I'll put a link for it in later.

While I've been finishing those I started on an Ork Mek which has been progressing well but has also been a bit challenging from a colour choice perspective. I have managed to get three different brown tones next to one another and he isn't looking very Blood-Axey.

More successful was finishing off some of the Fists of Light who needed designating for the battlefield. They have also had a coat of varnish. I'm just hoping it hasn't gone 'off' and dries clear. PXL_20260131_185936731.thumb.jpg.d3933bfa8237d7fb55562e1deaa2ddb9.jpg

I watched a battle report on WH+ yesterday with Jr Boltgun - Dark Angels Vs Orks Combat Patrol. We realised that we have all the models for the Dark Angels if we proxy the Chaplain (can use my Iron Gauntlet Aspirant Chaplain), just need to paint up my Inceptors and Redemptor Dreadnought.

The Ork Combat Patrol is complete (yay!).

Jr reckons we should start our 40k journey with Combat Patrol and that's fine by me.

So another pivot back to Astartes!

He likes 'nids too so I reckon they will be the next Combat Patrol(s) (I have the models for the one in the Codex as well as Leviathan!).

The most recent models are looking good. The Mek is on to a good start. I'm not sure about Ork clans, but the colours you chose work well.

And the Legio marines are cool, too. In retrospect, how did you enjoy painting black armour, as opposed to the usual colours?

Thanks @Brother Christopher, that Mek is looking a bit too Snakebitey too me so I'll be changing colours up a bit. The leg wrappings are a bit too yellow, possibly because I used AP Ivory White instead of Wraithbone as a base. D'oh!

As for the black, I wasn't sure while I was in the middle of it but was well pleased with the end result. The addition of bone and red elements really bring them alive and I could really see Black Templars being an enjoyable army to assemble. If I hadn't gone so far with the FoL, I'd be seriously considering them. Raven Guard and 30K Dark Angels aren't for me though.

As a BT Marshal (ha!), I'm glad to hear that. With black, a lot depends on how you approach it. From what I can see, you took a more enjoyable route with painting some parts of the models off-black. I would not recommend the classic way, though (i.e. paint the models black and break it up only with edge highlighting) - with larger projects, it becomes quite tedious very quickly. But yeah, mix in the classic BT secondary colours (which coincide with the Legio livery) and you have a very striking result.

Quite a while ago now I was lucky to score a custom mini-Dread drawing by RJ Mason. I deviated from his usual format by requesting a Redemptor but the base drawing was already sketched with a lascannon. Fine by me!

Here's Fred the Dread painted up as one of my Fists of Light. Now to replicate as a model...ah. the Redemptor doesn't come with a lascannon! Never mind, the Ballistus comes with a lascannon and a while back I filed off part of the Redemptor armour panel so the lascannon will fit (there might even be a photo a few pages back).

Now we have decided to go for the Mordekai's Judgement Combat Patrol, it is time to finish this model so today has been a building session.

I used some Vallejo putty on the back of the legs to bridge the gaps and between the armour panels on the 'calves'. And now I have run out of puff! Phew, definite progress but a way to go yet.

Fred's journey continues. Realised I had put on a thigh the wrong way round. Fortunately, I hadn't glued it particularly well!

The new Dreads are fantastic models, but a bit of a nightmare to assemble  Glad you managed to spot and resolve the issue before it was too late!
