Finished the plasma!

Thanks @Firedrake Cordova, that tutorial was well worth it.

The Plaguecaster is done too, I've started on the Plaguespewer from that set and also trimmed and part-assembled some Death shroud terminators.

A few more little details have been done on the Dread before I attack the edge highlighting again.

Not much activity in the Boltgun household.

A few more details on the Redemptor Dread, it is creeping forward.

And some basecoats and washes on another Plague Marine.

With the Call To Arms event coming up, I asked Boltgun Jr whether he wanted me to focus on Kill Team or 'big 40k'. He replied with 'big 40k' so I immediately pulled out my Volkus terrain! It is big and bulky so I have been attacking it with an x-Acto knife and glueing my fingers together. And occasionally getting a magnet fitted.

I love the terrain and want to paint it up in pretty much box art (unusual for me).

I had kind of hoped Jr would say Kill Team as The Red Terror is incoming and I have plenty of really cool KTs to paint up (Wreckas, Raveners, Votann, Ratlings, etc). OTOH I really like the 11th edition launch box - mainly for the Orks!

Unfortunately, real life has made an incursion that means my hobby activity has been less than I would have liked over May and may not get back to a decent level for a while. So thanks to everyone for updating their WIPs and blogs and allowing me to enjoy the hobby vicariously for the foreseeable.

Fred the Dread is slowly progressing. I have obscured all the detail work I did under the 'lid'.

Whilst my mixed layers (Caliban Green with increased amounts of Warpstone Glow) seemed to work on my marines, the edge highlights aren't really showing up in the photos - better in person. Perhaps more contrast is required and I should just follow GW's recommended highlighting method?!

Red needs highlighting and more details to finish but definitely getting closer.

The base is a bit boring so I'll be trialling some techniques on another base that I could maybe transfer to Fred

That's a bit of a problem with this design, but I wouldn't care too much. Especially if you didn't glue it in place. I actually quite like the base for the Dreadnought and I like how his feet are a bit dirty from the sand. It could use some more colour but I think that even adding some tufts or rocks should help. Nice, steady progress.

Speaking of bases - the one from today's post is shaping up to look great. It's absurdly cool how cut up sprues (because I assume that's what you used) look here - they have a very natural feel to them. Will this be a custom base for the Red Terror?

Thanks @Brother Christopher, I had purchased some tufts to 'spruce' up my bases but have misplaced them for the moment.

The new base is indeed for the Red Terror and the rubble is just chopped up sprues. Let's see what it looks like with some grey and a bit of dry brushing. If it works, I might add a little to Fred's base and that of George (my other Dread) to give a little interest.

The different textures work really well.

I think you can't go wrong with this here. Especially given how large the bases for the Dreads are, they're a good place they're a great place to go a bit wild. Havign said that, addign grass/tufts will be enough to break the 'monotony' of the base that you have right now.

Fred and George, right? Is it a reference to the series about the cleanse-able witch, Harry Potter?

Here's the Red Terror base with some added drybrushing. It definitely needs tufts and maybe a few skulls. I don't know whether to plate the bottom of the hole or leave it to the battle board to add depth.

CTA is a few days away and I've been debating whether to get involved this year.

I have a non-40k project for my Dad that will be a year late in July so I really ought to get back to that.

Whilst we're getting Apocalypse, I'm determined to play it before painting it, otherwise we won't get a game before 12th hits.

A couple of things IRL have thrown the hobby into sharp relief recently and as you can see, I've only been able to do a bit of work on the Red Terror base here and there.

If this continues, I'll probably be picking small projects such as one-offs rather than batch painting units despite not having got the FoL to full strength.
