Yeah, the rogue trader landraider is still one of my favorite 40K models (even though its reaaaally dated now in terms of details and simplicity), and the proteus is such a lovely and faithful modernization of it.  I likewise have some of the dinky ones, from my late friend's Space Marine (aka the original Epic/IA) game.  Anyway, sorry for drawing your thread off topic.

BTW, that heresy era knight head is interesting - what do you intend to put it on?

A bit further along

I kept going back to it today until I got tired and started making mistakes. Nothing that can't be fixed, I think.

Trying to decide between my attempt at a skull patterned helmet and Reiver head for the Chaplain.

And for a little nostalgia, some of my inspiration

I'm sorry I  hadn't replied before. I really don't know what we'll do with that head yet but it is a nice souvenir from a great day out.

Following on from the previous photos I managed to complete my challenge in time with some base rims and weapon case highlights.

Photos are with the custom data slates and a bit of fluff I'm my Iron Gauntlet thread.

FoL Notable characters

So much fun with the Iron Gauntlet this year. One last challenge to go! It doesn't have any painting in it so I have started some more FoL marines - 5 Assault Intercessors. They will take my squad up to 10. Then I just need 5 regular Intercessors and 3 Bladeguard and I will have a 500 point Boarding Patrol / Party / Force / whatever they are called. My first ever 40k army!*

*I have just realised that, technically I had an army painted BITD with half an Epic Space Marine box painted up in my green / red colour scheme

Q: What do you do when you commission some artwork with a weapon loadout that doesn't match the model or rules?

A: make up some fluff Brother Frederich  and buy two dreadnoughts

The Tamiya razor saw came out for a little armour plate surgery so I could fit the Ballistus Lascannon on the Redemptor chassis.

With some magnetization  you could field him both legally and as shown in the photo.

And that was a really nice cut - at least from the angle shown, the pieces go together very smoothly.

Thanks @Dr_Ruminahui, the armour plate has a slight lip where I removed the material and I'm hesitant to sand it as my technique isn't great. Instead of a flat plane it might end up scalloped!

As for the arms, I've not built the Redemptor shoulder yet and I have read they may take some fettling but I might stick with the existing arm connection - most of the time the lascannon will be on the Ballistus. It will be nice to paint up Fred the Dread for some photos. I'm going to take my time with it as it is quite a detailed / fiddly kit. The Ballistus is far more straightforward!

As for WIP, I've submitted a draft for challenge V of the Iron Gauntlet - the short story challenge. The IG has been great fun and really got the Fists of Light moving, I'm determined to get them up to fighting strength and then, who knows...maybe a game? They'll need an adversary though....

A little quiet on the 40k front as I had a side project that has now been completed. Phew.

Got my wet palette back in action after last year's nurgle infestation (mould resistant my...) and wow, wish I'd just stuck with it!

I'm warming up to the Redemptor with practice on the Ballistus.

Poor photo as under the electric light in the dining room.

Relatively slow going as there are more surfaces to these than I first thought and I'm trying my best to get even coverage.

Not pictured are the five Assault Intercessors who have had the base green and red completed.

I was going to try out a 'marine juice' wash but the AP Dark Tone went out of stock by the time my Hivestorm box was ready to be posted. If it doesn't ship by Friday, I might just go with my standard Nuln oil.

More WIP of the Ballistus and the Assault Intercessors. All ready for washing, bar a couple of small base coat touch ups.

Just three Bladeguard to go and I'll have a 500pt Boarding Patrol (plus Dread). So the Fists of Light will need an adversary. A choice between...

- Orks

- GSC

- Tyranids

If you go for the Genestealer Cults, then you could expand them with Tyranids in the future, if you were so inclined. (personally, I love the Orks and Genestealer Cults...)

I have some GSC from the Wyrmblade and Brood Brothers Kill Teams to build and paint.

They would already be dual purpose as I hope to use them in Genestealer (OG Space Hulk expansion) as I never got as far as playing the missions as a kid.

My lore outline was for the 'Scarlet Dawn' cult. It means more red though so I might have to revisit that! Nids would be in the standard Leviathan colours to go with my original 'stealers. Plan to expand with the Combat Patrol, maybe from the partworks magazine.

As for Orks, I've got nearly all the models already in the form of a Combat Patrol and Stompa Boysz box, plus the Trukk I've already painted. They would be Bad Moons or Blood Axes (or both). Or maybe Goffs.

I should really go for Orks as I don't need to spend anything!

A terrible photo but representative of some progress.

I finally got my pot of dark tone so made my mix of 'marine juice'. And then washed Assault intercessors with Nuln Oil to keep them consistent with the other five. I then reapplied the base green as required.

Basing goop added. I've decided my bases need pimping so I'm considering a couple of types of tufts to add some interest.

I built a Tyranid psychophage. Because I love the model. Then put in a box in the shed.

I'd picked up a Goliath truck cheapish so started assembling that. I'm most of the way through but have paused to consider magnetising the rock grinder variant.

I assembled two of the the Goliath crew to serve as test models for my GSC.

Out goes the 'Scarlet Dawn' and in come the 'Twilight Singers'. They have infiltrated the mining community on one of Cantab IV's moons, corrupting the miner's worksongs with their own, anti-imperial hymns. I'm thinking Leviathan colours as I'll be predictable and paint any Nids that colour too (after all, it is the same scheme as my Space Hulk Genestealers from many pages back).

  • 2 weeks later...

The half -term holiday has meant a little time away from the painting desk but I grabbed the opportunity this morning to re-establish the red basecoat on the assault Intercessors which means they are now ready for first highlight (I'd already done the green and even put some colour on the bases).

Also, some black down on my neophyte test subjects.

Time away from hobby painting meant lots of time hobby thinking. As usual (for me), I have an excess of ideas over time and talent. A goal for next year will be to try and retain a tighter focus on projects and completion. The Fists of Light will certainly help!

Hobby time has been limited recently but progress has been made.

1000019545.jpeg

A last little bit of tidying and some decals are required. The previous Heavy Intercessors also need their decals.

I thought I only had one more squad left to complete the Boarding Patrol but some regular intercessors will be required in addition to the Bladeguard.

Struggling to decide on a colour for my Twilight Singers Neophytes.

1000019594.jpeg

Metal Armour - gunmetal

Body Armour - Black Templar over Grey Seer

Leather - Black

I'm thinking lights will be a yellow spot colour.

Maybe the boxart Thunderhawk Blue?

Or maybe something a little brighter?

In other news, I was gearing up to Go Green in 2025 but last night a friend hinted heavily that he'd like a go at Kill Team and he likes Tau.

So my Pathfinders sprues have been released from the Chalnath box in the loft. Can I get them built and painted by the end of the year...?

I have had a longer-than-expected break from the forum and had some catching-up to do. The conversions from way back in September area great.

I'm really excited for the Dreadnought.

I'm surprised that the weapons aren't interchangeable.
