"Knives In The Void" Painting Challenge 2022

Lysimachus

Recommended Posts

I forgot (lost in the reading of "Devastation of Baal") but my Blood Angels intercession squad is done !

I took my last spare Phobos and Intercessors bodies to mount this team as intercessors and I'm quite happy with the WYSIWYG result :

Assault intercessor sarge with power fist

Assault intercessor grenadier

Assault intercessor warrior

Intercessor gunner

Intercessor warrior

Intercessor warrior

I now have to find them names !

(sorry for the average quality of the pictures)

Cheers! I can't paint or look at them without hearing a certain theme tune...

Unfortunately due to other commitments, I won't be participating further, so these guys won't make into the challenge, and my vows will have to stand as they are.

Good luck everyone!

Theme? Doctor?

Sontaron?

  2. Vorbid Thrice-Blessed: Anointed
  3. Khaksek Boneblight: Gunner with flamer
  4. Vabrox Plaguebrace: Heavy Gunner with heavy bolter
  5. Gaozzux Blightreaper: Icon Bearer with bolter

Thanks for organizing, and good luck to all the entrants- looks like some pretty cool stuff coming.

Also wanted to share two other non-competition kill teams I started before the competition began that I've not posted elsewhere.

I am ready for my third and final vow for this, another CSM team:

I, Sitnam, vow to complete one Kill Team of the Fiends of the Apocalypse warband, to be fully painted and based by the 31st January 2023, and to provide at least minimal fluff/background for them. May the Changer warp my flesh in failure

I got ahead of myself and painted the Aspiring Champion with his girlfriend. The other Fiends don’t believe him, as he insists she’s from another intellectual property

Progress has been slow lately, but I Bluetac‘ed the Gunner, Melee Specialist and Aspiring Champion to check the composition for further detail  work

I understand the Autocannon isn‘t the greatest choice for KT, but I intended to stay with the models from the box so I wouldn‘t get distracted

Well, me neither

Tester marble bases for the Word Bearers kill-team turned out pretty well. Will definitely work on refining the technique, but I'm happy with it at the moment. Up next is finishing the washing and detailing of the kill team and adding some blood to the bases, then they should be completed.

Guess I just prefer the look of the heavy bolter? :whistling:

Also with  the Hedonistarii / Slaneeshi vibes of the KT, I look at the AC and can’t help but think:

”Hey, this could be a bit more sonic!

But I’ll never be able to build a decent looking conversion in time for this event, so …

I actually do think by limiting myself to the stuff I have available with just a few touch ups, it conveys the theme of a raiding warband much more. They have to make due with what they can get their hands on and it sets them apart from being EC with a sloppy paint job

I certainly intend to expand on them after the event and build a few more for an expanded force / pool if operatives - already eyeing the stand alone Noise Marine for a possible Tome warlock conversion and will probably sink my Christmas money into a box of KT Legionnaires

They are pirates, right? With a love of discordant music, yes?

Sea shanties! :pirate:

That is actually an excellent idea and does fit the theme very well tbh :pirate:

It will definitely have to go  into the fluff !

Though I’ve no idea how to model something to represent  sea shanties atm … maybe something like AoS endless spells?!

I’m open to suggestions

Wow, how did you achieve that effect? Stunning!

It's called the dryer sheet/wet wipe method for airbrushes. You take used dryer sheets or dried out wet wipes (I used dryer sheets because its less wasteful) to create the veins and patterning of marble.

In my case, I started off with a black primer, then airbrushed Citadel Night Lords Blue and Russ Grey unevenly across the bases- these will be the "marble vein" colors so you can really change it up for some cool combos. Then I taped over the bases used dryer sheets that I had torn holes in (securing the sheets to the bases was the hardest part). Then increasingly lighter color airbrushed layers of grey/white, Reaper Polished Bone-Ghost White- very light Pure White. Let it dry for a little while, I waited a couple of hours, then take off the dryer sheets. Next I'll hit it with some 'Ardcoat gloss varnish to get that really polished stone look.

It sounds involved, but you are really using a very tiny amount of paint in each airbrushed layer, so it doesn't take much time once you start going. I'll be working on it more, as this will be the basing for half of a diorama I'm planning on this next year (desecrated Sororitas temple).

Those bases look very nice, and sound like a clever technique!

I dunno, upload a tiktok with them when you sign off on the vow, or sommat. :pirate:

Mate, I'm just the customer service department, if you want ideas, that's down the hall in Corporate.

I liked the idea of a Destroyer Cult having acolytes. The Destroyers themselves seem to be of the intelligent castes (at least in Twice-Born King series and the codex makes it seem like they actively seek out Crypteks for modification) so what happened to their semi-sentient Warrior underlings? Would their masters, who have embraced the glory of Khor- I mean the visceral feedback of melee, let them keep their guns? Instead, they get armed with Neural-shredder Axes and Blackstone Shanks.

If I end up working in shooting, it will be Gauss Reapers as the acolytes of Lokhust Destroyers.

I never thought about that but I like this idea a lot. Going along with the ideas from Twice-born king it makes sense that those Destroyers (still) sane enough would seek to modify their followers accordingly. Likewise, maybe other  nobles might steer their lessers towards the Destroyer Cults if they develop certain related behavior patterns? Like medieval nobles encouraging  the younger siblings to join he priesthood so you don‘t have to worry about them at home?

Finished my Sinister Six! I have a couple more lads to paint, I'll see how far I'll get towards a full Claw. Thank you for hosting this event, you've awakened my love for the Night Lords!

Narovis, Blackfist

As squadleader of 4th Claw of the 4th Company, Narovis likes to get close and personal with his prey. He has the habit of shooting plasma bolts against heavily armoured targets before finishing them of with his Fist. Narovis' Artificer usually expects his master to return from battle with a charred Powerfist to repaint.

Soth, Crewslayer

Soth has a very unusual way to hunt. He likes to stalk  enemy vehicles to disable them with a precise rocket to the engine, making extreme efforts to preserve the lives of the crew inside. When the crew disembarks, he hunts them down one by one with his trusty blade. As a result he enjoys disabling troop transports a lot more than battle tanks.

Vyrakesh, The Red Sun

Waiting in the dark, Vyrakesh only unleashes his Plasma rifle when his targets expect it the least before returning to the shadows. As a result, his prey only spots a miniature red sun before their fiery end. The red glow and charred remains of his slain enemies are usually the only proof that Vyrakesh has passed through.

Alatus

Quantity is a quality all of it's own. Alatus believes that every foe can be brought down with a good amount of bolts. He stalks into the midst of his prey and unleashes a whirlwind of bolts, revelling in the absolute mayhem he creates.

Keras

Keras prefers to stalk from a distance and waits patiently for the perfect moment to unleash a devastating wave of bolts, ripping foes apart before the realize they're under attack.

Arkamisk

Keras' shadow, always by his side during battle. Their combined bolter fire makes short work of most foes.

Filthy heretics... but all superbly painted and cracking background, very nice work guys!

Edit: that's 7 completions for Loyal Astartes, 6 for Heretic Astartes, and 1 each for Imperials and Xenos!
