CSM 10th edition Obliterators

This is a topic about Obliterators in the 10th edition.

  • Do you use them?
  • How are you using them?
  • Do you think they perform well?
  • Do you attach them to any specific unit?
  • Is there a detachment that they are extra crucial?
  • Any Enhancements that you like to use with them?

Other Unit of the Week for Chaos Space Marines can be found in the link below.

I quite like my obliterators - often take a unit of 2 in my 1500 or 2000 point lists.  There are pretty durable, have decent and versatile shooting, and can deepstrike, though they are kind of pricey.  I'm also one of those people who like the new models - I like the "mini hellbrute" look, bikini bottoms and all.

One thing I've noticed is that I never seem to use their bottom tier of shooting - I find that I'm always better off using the middle tier instead, as I find that its blast profile typically brings it to having only slightly less shots while having higher strength, damage and AP.  I suppose there might be a set of targets where the bottom profile is better, but I struggle to think of what they might be - perhaps small units of squishy targets, but in that case its probably not a unit I want to be shooting my oblits at anyway, given the many, many other options we have to kill such.

While the deepstrike is super nice in grabbing objectives (and usually you can do so somewhere that you can still shoot), I sometimes find it a bit of a trap against shooty opponents.  In particular, against my friend's necrons my army is usually mostly dead by turn 3, in which case losing a 1/3 of my oblits shooting by holding them back to deepstrike really hurts.  That's not really a knock against oblits though (other than they being a pretty big chunk of my points) and more of a comment on game balance and deepstrike more generally.

iv been soo disapointed wit them this edition, im now running them as termys instead...(also mine are converted termys as not a fan of the current obliterators))

personally i found for the points they just dont do enough. that even the melta withan 18 inch range means cant get the melta bonus on a deepstrike. and the number of shots a unit... at 160 points... id rather a predator and spare points...

I like them, but they are really just a "meh" unit. Despite their varied shooting profile, limited to just 2 per unit really doesn't make their shooting have impact. The focused anti-tank profile has been set to 18", so no melta bonus if deep striking, the lower profile rarely ever gets used like Dr_Ruminahui said, the mid tier profile seems to get better results with the blast designation.

I think it would have been better for the lower tier to get the blast and the mid tier get something like sustained.

They are pretty tough, but do fall to any dedicated shooting or melee units.

I do like them in Pactbound and marked with Tzeentch for the cheeky skinshift ploy, bringing one back feels kind of dirty, but for their cost, I don't feel too bad about it.

If I'm not bringing a lot of fiends in my list, the Obliterators will usually make it in.

I will most likely keep them in deep strike, because they have a psychological effect. With such a small foot print, they can usually drop in most places and create pressure where i need it.
