With regards to the colour schemes and Chapter symbols, I'm an advocate of hand-painting. It's what I'm doing. It's what Fab-Gen did. Darth Potato is keen to wuss out and get decals made, but I'm seriously not in favour of that.

Another Tip would be to leave the shoulder guard on the sprue. Spray it and paint it red, highlight and so on. Then paint the symbol using Fab Gen's method, then glue it on the model.

I'm a little puzzled, Mol. The Drawing of Captain Caphius shows The =I= on his armour in 2 spots. The first is the belt and the other is on the corner of his left sholder pad. I thought they couldn't show the symbol unless seconded to the deathwatch? Unless i missed something.

What about battle honors for both Caphius and the 2nd company? Caphius's drawing shows the wreath of thorns. Is this correct? If so what warrented the honor?

Seerbrun is a great artist, but he's taken a great deal of liberty with the Castigators he's drawn. He named his Chaplain 'Karakalla', which isn't even a Latin name, forcing me to come up with a long and torturous explanation of how Chaplain Coratus acquired such a monicker. Equally, he drew what he liked on the Captain. And that's his right - I don't want to take anything away from the huge favours he's done for me. But you can understand why I'm keen to keep creative control of the Castigators after experiences like that.

So you want the real reasons? It's because an artist decided to draw things with little understanding for how it would affect the fluff. If you want the fluff reason, Castigators are entitled to wear the Inquisitorial symbol as an honour marking on occasion. Marines that are seconded to the personal service of an Inquisitor, or who join the alien-hunting Deathwatch are entitled to display Inquisitorial symbols upon their armour when they return to their chapter. As for the wreath of thorns, he would've been assigned it for ar act of extreme valour that directly contributed to an Imperial victory. Caphius has such a long history of service that he could've received it at any time. Bluntly stated, I'm not going to make up battles on the spot to cover up the fact that I haven't detailed it. As stated, Caphius was meant to be a background character. A hugely influential and important background character, but just a background character. The Second Company is featuring in my Castigators fiction, Machinery of Hate.

Just reading back through the thread and I saw this:

Toyship's also raised the issue of an epic poem, which I want to run by Barret, as he had a similar idea once. If I'm going to do that, I'll need help! I have no idea what such a poem would be about, but I can imagine it being recited at one of the Castigators' fourteen-yearly gatherings. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Possibly a poem about the founding of the Castigators. Thats something I can see them reciting every 14 years.

Organisation

In accordance to the Codex Astartes, the Castigators maintain ten companies, adhering to the tenets of the Codex Astartes as laid down by Primarch Roboute Guilliman over ten thousand years ago. What follows is an explanation of the Chapter's structure.

Chapter Headquarters
The Chapter's headquarters - also known as the 'Master's Household' - is the province of the Chapter Master, and also includes his personal Honour Guard. It comprises the senior hierarchy of the chapter, along with specialist organisation such as the Reclusiam, Apothecarion, Librarius and Armoury (detailed below). The officers of the household often include marines too old or infirm to continue fighting. They have huge reserves of knowledge and experience and are well-suited to advise the Master on strategy and tactics. The chapter's administration is governed by Chapter serfs.

  • [*]
Armoury
The Armoury comprises the Chapter's Techmarines and servitors. The Techmarines maintain vehicles, transports and ships, as well as overseeing the work of the artificers. The artificers are human serfs that fabricate, maintain and repair weapons, armour and banners. They are also responsible for adding campaign badges, honour markings and other icons to the Chapter's wargear and warmachines. The Chapter's battle-brethren are usually forbidden to set foot within the Chapter's forges. It is here that the Techmarines build, repair and maintain the chapter's equipment. On the battlefield Techmarines usually form their own detachments and typically operate seperately from the main battleforce, concentrating on conducting battlefield repairs to damaged wargear.

Like the majority of Space Marine chapters, the Castigators honour ancient pacts with the Adeptus Mechanicus that stretch back millennia to their very founding. Those amongst the Castigators with an affinity for technology are dispatched to Mars, where they are initiated into the Martian tech-cults. This is acknowledged as a necessary process - without the techmarines, the Adeptus Astartes would be left unable to tend to the machine spirits, to observe the rites that ensure continued operation of their wargear, or to repair damage taken on the field of battle. But the process comes at a lamentable price - the loss of battle-brothers to the worship of the Omnissiah. The techmarines are mysterious and capricious, aloof and distant. Their inscrutable ways are not easily understood by most of the battle-brethren. Indeed, some of the more zealous factions among the chapter distrust the techmarines. To them, the worship of the Omnissiah is at best dangerous, and at worst heretical. It is a duty of the Chapter Master to ensure that these ideological tensions are defused and that no blood is spilt.

Heres my notes on the Eighth Company, I tried to keep them to the same format as Darth Potato's:

Tigris is a strong, well-liked Captain. Only relatively recently inducted as Captain of the Assault Reserve, he greatly values the respect of his peers, and aims to win it through glorious victory. He meticulously plans his assaults in order to ensure the enemy cannot thwart him before launching into the fray at the head of his Battle-Brothers, leading by example.

Victrix - A symbol of his fighting style - carefully lining up the attack, and then swinging down with devastating force. The winged axe. The name represents what he wants to achieve - Victory and through victory - glory, and ultimately respect.

Personal History

- Inducted into the Castigators 863.M41

- The Garrett Insurrection 900.M41 - Tigris takes part in the siege as a member of the Tenth Company. He and his squad were used to prevent land based supply lines entering the fortress. At the end of the battle he is inducted into the Eighth Company, under Brother-Captain Lucan.

- Joins the Fourth Company under Captain Timon. Becomes Assault-Sergeant in twenty years. He formed a good friendship with Timon. 934.M41

- The Death of Captain Lucan fighting the Orks on Glavia Secundus. Tigris put forward for Captaincy. 970.M41

- Defence of Dalaham. 973.M41

- Recion War. 996.M41

Allies

Venatus - An old friend, possibly once Tigris’ Captain during his time as a Scout. To Tigris, Venatus is a father figure who deserves huge amounts of respect and as such he treats him with great reverence. Also, he reminds Tigris of where he came from and what his duties as a Castigator and an astartes are to Humanity and the Emperor.

Anteas - There is a mutual respect between Anteas and Tigris. Both have the same moral views, and both are moderates. In a clash between the two factions both know they can count on each other for support.

Timon - A good friend, a relationship forged in the fires of war. Tigris previously served under Timon during his time in the 4th Company. Tigris has the utmost respect for Timon, it was he who first showed Tigris the basis for strategy.

Escalus - A man respected by most within the chapter. Tigris respects him for his neutrality and his battle skill. To Tigris he is the pinnacle of a warrior: respected by his peers and godlike upon the battlefield.

Tigris' Heraldry

Winged axe. Represents Victrix.

8th Company

The 8th Company is led by the youthful Captain Tigris - second only to Anteas - who has led the company for only twenty five years. However, despite his youth Tigris is an excellent tactician. He meticulously prepares his plans, leaving no option unchecked. Being so young, Tigris craves the respect of his fellow captains, as such he leads from the front aiming to prove himself and his company in the fires of combat. Since becoming captain, Tigris has led his company in three major engagements, the most recent on the planet Recion Prime, which had been assaulted by a warband of hellspawn and heretics.

Chaplain Decius - A marine who is almost three times as old as Tigris. He looks after the spiritual health of the Eighth Company, as he has been for the last two hundred years. To the eight he represents their honour and gains much respect from the men.

First-Sergeant Tiberius - Tiberius is the senior sergeant in the Eighth Company, and has been since the Garrett Insurrection. He is one of Tigris’ closest friends and he often looks to Tiberius for support. Like Tigris, Tiberius prefers to lead from the front.

Apothecary Crassus - It is Crassus’ grim duty to harvest the Progenoid glands from the fallen of the Eighth. He is a grizzled veteran who has fought in many campaigns. He receives much respect from the warriors of the Eighth, due to the fact he has saved their lives at least once - in battle or on the medical table.

Lexicanium Eonus - More to come.

Recent company disposition charts show the ten squads that currently make up the Reserve Company:

1st Assault Squad, Tiberius

2nd Assault Squad, Cato

3rd Assault Squad, Cassius

4th Assault Squad, Amatius

5th Assault Squad, Crispus

6th Assault Squad, Menathus

7th Assault Squad, Gracus

8th Assault Squad, Septimus

9th Assault Squad, Lucius

10th Assault Squad, Metellus

NB - Each of the assault squads has many was of going to war, including Jump Pack, Bike, Land Speeder and Rhino APC.

Notable Campaigns

787.M41 - The Purging of Helion IV - The Eighth Company is called into action against an isolated cell of heretics, who are believed to be working for the Word Bearers Chaos Legion. They were slaughtered quickly and without loss.

900.M41 - The Garrett Insurrection - The entire Chapter mobilized to fight against a planetary uprising orchestrated by the Word Bearers. The battle lasted a full week, at which point the Third Company assaulted a breach in the enemy lines with Ancient Constantine, Bearer of the Crimson Standard. Constantine was killed and the standard passed to Rhetoricus. The Eighth Company played a minor role harrying the enemy lines and diverting their attention from the main force. The day was won by the Third Company. Tigris is inducted in the Eighth.

973.M41 - Defence of Dalaham - The capital city of Syrrios - Dalaham -was assaulted by the vile Eldar for unknown reasons. The Eighth, under the newly promoted Captain Tigris, assaulted the Eldar in two prongs crushing them between the two forces. The planet was free within the month.

996.M41 - Recion War - The Eighth and a unit of Terminators from the 1st Company, under the command of Inquisitor Samios, drove out a force of heretics from the system, there were reported sightings of daemonic hellspawn. The company sustained minimal losses.

I respect your creative control, that is why i have been asking you questions. I apologize if i have been bombarding you with to much. I agree with you on the new captain minature from the 5th edition box set, as being suitable for Caphius. Just needs a little work. Everything that i do for the Castigators will be run through you first. ;)

I am still working on ideas. When i have time to compile the info, i'll post it here or PM you. ;)

Ferrus Manus, nice work. Looking forward to see more.

I've also discussed some 10th Company fluff with Hasoroth, which might get revised at some stage, but has proven useful thus far:

10th Company:

The Scout Company of the Castigators is led by the venerable Captain Venatus, who has held this honored and trying position for over a century. Although kept from the main bulk of the fighting, the wiry old Marine still takes to the field along his young charges for the riskiest of missions, inciting zeal and bravery amongst the Scouts, only recently initiated to the Castigators. Whilst his grizzled demeanor
evokes thoughts of a father figure, his face hides the mind of a violent xenophobic, comparable to the attitude of Captain Caphius. Although his duties keep him busy in the Sanctuary, he has recently lead the Scout detachment attached to the 2nd Company in battle on Maethax.

Captain Venatus: Grizzled, aged, and passionate would serve as a crude summation of the old Captain of the 10th. Frequently nicknamed

This is by far the most expanded fluff I have ever read. Commisar Molotov I salute you, Darth Potato, Derrell, Ferrus, and whoever else help contribute to such a fine Index Astartes. This is by far as good, as well thought out, and as well represented as any other chapter in the Imperium. In the history of DIY Chapter few have come as far as you have with the Castigators. The Castigator "Team" have done an excellent job, this thread is the standard to which all other Index Astartes should be applied.

Thanks; it was starting to hurt. :D

Still, it's always good to know people appreciate the Castigators. To my mind, they're not good enough, and as such I keep striving onwards and upwards to improve them until I get them to a standard I'm happy with.

Perfectionism has its downsides, alas.

While Ferrus, Darrell and I have contributed to this thread, among others, this is Commissar Molotov's Chapter. He's done 99% of the work, we're only here for the ride. I'm just glad that these guys are getting some air-time, it's great to see more people get involved with them, and offer up their opinions.

THIRD COMPANY UPDATE

Brother Captain Sirius

The valiant third company of the Castigators Chapter, is lead by the experienced veteran, Captain Sirius. The elder marine has led his company for more than 250 years, longer than Chapter Master Quintilius has been at the helm of the Chapter. He shows leadership qualities that are unmatched on the fields of battle. Additionally Sirius also has the role of 'Master of the Arsenal' in the Chapter, and as such he has some strenuous tasks which call for him. His various duties would include maintenance checks and the preservation of the Castigators wargear and vehicle distribution. Sirius has access to any relic item or for that matter any piece of wargear in the Chapter.

The Master of the Arsenal has unfettered access to the most ancient and sacred wargear of the Chapter.

You don't make it clear whether Licinus is a lexicanium (In other words, an ordinary Battle-Brother seconded to the Librarium for a while) or a Codicier/Epistolary, in which case he's a permanent member of the Librarium. You say that he's been with the Company for "a number of years" but then you also say he's young. In other words, he's been a Librarian too long to be a lexicanium, but he's perhaps too young to be a Codicier.

Anyway, over the next few days I'll try to review the notes that've been submitted by the various people and decide which are 'canon'. I'm also hoping to revise the Castigators' timeline and work on some details surrounding the Castigators' Librariam.

It'll be neat to read a bit more about the Castigator's Librarium. I really like how they've keot the librarium in spite of the fact that they have no Psykers. They stick to the Codex, which may or may not include librarians, but eschew psykers. Brilliant....
