The fraction of the chaos gods that surfs the internet (always with 666 tabs open) is well pleased with this.

As their emissary I can say that you are indeed a vanguard, a forerunner nay a leader of the eightfold path!

Papa Nurgle is impressed with the Ultraforge nastiness. Well he chuckled and farted when he saw it.

Lord Khorne has been raging about how his brass scorpion doesn't look as good as yours.

Master Tzeentch is forever changing his mind on which conversion is his favorite.. However as an emissary I can interpret him and tell you that he loves your dark apostle the best 9% of the time.

Finally Prince Slaanesh displayed his pleasure when viewing this thread in a rather disturbing way. Look at my avatar and you shall get the gist of it.

As a lowly minor daemon myself I found the human psyker the best. I shall possess him when I get the chance.

July Update 2

Little update, spent the weekend painting the Chaos Lord. Still PIP, needs work in a number of places, namely the skulls, and I'm still a little shaky on the green fire, so things are subject to change. I also have plans for his base. There will be Cadians. And probably more green warpfire.

And on an unrelated note I'll be painting a Great Blue Chicke - er, Lord of Change, for a buddy. Not Forge World, but I've always liked the metal one so it should be fun. Although, the Call deadline is fast approaching, and I'm kinda starting to feel it. But time flows strangely in the Warp, so there is yet hope.

Flood, Rogan and PsychosisPC: Thanks! :D

Yogi: I am honored to receive the favor of the Dark Gods! Thank you for delivering their message unto this thread.

Jumai: Glory to Chaos! Great looking Apostle so far, brother. Digging the horns on the helmet. May he bring death to many servants of the False One.

Vladvar: Thanks, blood's Tamiya Clear Red mixed with old Citadel black ink - varying ratios as I mix on the models. As for the Crozius, I considered that bit when I was putting him together, but I'd just gotten ahold of the Knight box at the time and I figured the mace would be nifty. Actually been thinking about making a mkII version of the Apostle for a while, so that star bit may have a second chance, but not for a while yet.

I think the trick to avoiding the used chewing gum look with warpfire is to shade down to blue and highlight up to yellow. This kinda copies normal fires with their the red-orange-yellow spectrum, and helps give a sense of seeing down inside when the green areas look like seeing the blue through the yellow. A little MSPaint-ing later, and I'll say it looks workeable to me:

Final Call update

Close, but no lho stick. I'm gonna have to say I've failed my Call. Long story short, everything's "done," but I'm not happy with how these models turned out and I want to do some more work on them before I can comfortably say they're really finished. Mostly minor details and touchups but I am quite out of time.

On the other hand, I finally snagged some half-decent shots of the Scorpion using a friend's lightbox:

If this is failure, I'm not sure we could handle seeing success. :D

Great job either way, man. Victory or no, your models continue to rank among the most inspiring XVII's I've ever seen.

Oh pfft, they're looking great. I wish I could freehand a banner like that one.

Could we get a better look at the raptor champ? It would be nice to see exactly what you did with the legs from the chaos knight (added over other legs, or green stuff?) as well as how the wings fit in there. Both are things I've wanted to try so it would be educational.

Also, for your skulls, have you ever tried putting a super subtle, almost subliminal hint of blue down in the darkest recesses/inside the cranium? I picked up the trick from a project log of a daemon-winning model with awesome skulls (the forge world abbadon one on coolminiornot) and I think it's really helpful.

I'm guessing that the browns that go into making bone look right emphasize the orange end of the colour wheel, and that tinting the deep shadows with orange's compliment therefor produces high colour contrast even from saturations too low for any overt blueness. Contrast that sharp is unnatural-looking on a continuous surface, so creating it in eye sockets and such would visually distinguish the areas of bone as seperate from the areas you want to look like empty space, and thereby force you to interpret the shadowy area as something other than a dark coloured patch on the skull. To me, putting a bit of blue down there seems to emphasize the facial structure and snap the skull into focus. I'm curious to know if you've come across the idea.

That being said, the plog writer I copied put the blue there because he noted it in medical photos of skulls, and cautioned that what he had observed was likely a printing artefact. On one hand, such artefacts might be generated because of exactly what I just described. On the other hand, all that is conjecture with no support save my hand waving, and I might just be full of crap.

Thanks guys. Jumai - Regarding the skulls, that's an interesting idea, wouldn't have thought of that. I'm not sure how well it'd work on this scale - that FW Abby is almost a foot tall - but I'll try it out the next time I paint something with skulls (this being Warhammer, probably sooner than later :)). As for the Raptor champ, the wings and the jump pack are from the Sanguinary Guard set, and for the legs, check out this tutorial.

Everything's done, at long last.

And here's that closeup of the champion:

And this is officially my halfway mark for a full Cohort. Next things I'm gonna worry about are cultists (always need more of those) and my motor pool (I have too many unpainted tanks). Will be ordering another Hell Blade fighter from FW soon, and I'm thinking about getting a couple other things. We'll see.

Heh, I don't check my thread for over a month and the day I do I get 3 (edit: 4) posts. :( Thanks guys - Quixus, the head's from the Possessed sprue. And yeah, the claws are from the Terminator Lord arms 'cause I didn't have anything else lying around.

Haven't done much Word Bearer stuff (except for some power weapon Aspiring Champions I had to paint up for some 500 point games - will post them later, don't have pics right now). However, I'm working on a Great Blue Chicken for a friend's daemon army. Oddly enough I'm really enjoying this whole "painting in bright colors" thing. Still very WIP, skin's mostly done, rest of it needs work. Gold's just one layer so that needs work, robe needs to go up a few shades, think the wings need a light wash in a couple places where I got a bit overzealous with the drybrushing, and there's a couple other things I need to do. Also thinking of putting blue fire on the base since all the blue on the wings make it a bit top-heavy.

gallery_39401_2771_130707.jpg

Aaand here are those power weapon Champions. These fellows will be leading plasmagun squads.

gallery_39401_2771_68784.jpg

And two more champions, WIP. Left is for a heavy bolter Havoc squad, right is for my fourth and final flamer-melta-fist squad, CC-themed of course.

gallery_39401_2771_137301.jpg

I've decided the existing army needs more fire, braziers and torches and that sort of thing, so I'll be going back through and adding bits here and there before I start up any new squads. Haven't done anything pic-worthy with the Chicken yet, will probably do more work on him tomorrow. Probably.

I spent ages trying to thimk of some constructive criticism and only thought that you should give those champions some trophys or dead guardsmen.

Great work as ever Raz.

Oh and the right champs boltpistol in the second photo needs to be drilled out ( I cant talk, see my thread, not a drilled out weapon in sight )

DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPEROR

Oh alright. Good news is I finally cleared off my desk for this, bad news is I'm gonna need a bigger desk soon.

gallery_39401_2771_532720.jpg

I'll probably do another army shot sooner than later, ordered a third Hell Blade and as I said I need to add firey stuff throughout. Also wanna bulk out the cultist mob a bit more. Chicken's about finished, need to hear back about what he wants me to do with the base and that'll be it.

Thanks for the comments guys, good to hear from you Somerville, and thanks for pointing out the bolt pistol Gunthar. I feel inclined to agree about adding guardsmen, particularly on the one with the maul.

In the name of God Emperor, I demand you to stop this immediatelly, close this topic and delete all pictures! My reasons are these:

1) It should insult my refined, staunchly loyalist sneses but it does not wich troubles me...

2) It sparks again that little Word Bearer spark I have somewhere deep inside of me

3) It sparks it really huge and I do not have the money...

I really should stop going to these WB topics, every time I open one, I want to fulfill my dream of footslogging, termie heavy WB army...And so far, this topic was the strongest! Close it for the sake of my wallet! :P
