Well no comments or criticism so I'm guessing I need to do more :cuss

Been a busy long weekend due to a good birthday, but I have almost finished a kitbashed apothecary which i'll try and post some pics of in the next few days ;)

Looking good so far. The white looks nice and smooth.

You're a braver man than me painting white over a black undercoat :D

The white is nowhere near as smooth as it looks thanks to the wonders of a crap camera :(.

If I gave them another couple of coats it'd be better, but I just want to bash the squads out at the mo and then go back to them in future for smartening up.

Although I do think i've found a quick method for white over black, just slap a couple of coats of Astronomicon Grey followed by a recess filling layer of Badab Black over the black, the white goes over that pretty smoothly and you end up with a cold bright white.

Many thanks for the comments

Thats funny! The white does look pretty good though.

Your intro drew me to this blog as I have been involed for nearly 20 years (started with Rogue Trader but haven't played since 2nd ed and i hve never had a painted army. I have been procrastinating for about 4 years on a SM army but keep changing my mind on a theme- DIY or known chapter etc

Will follow with interest, hey maybe it will inspire me.

Well I have been quite lucky in the fact that aside from a brief dalliance with those crazy guys the World Eaters I have stuck with this DIY chapter from the get go and have had the colour scheme sorted for years, it's just the actual applying of the paint that has eluded me :HQ:

I do hope that I can inspire you as I feel that creating a good looking and characterful DIY chapter is one of the most rewarding parts of collecting Marines, or even a DIY clan/sect/craftworld/warband of the foul Xenos or Heretics :P

I remember looking at white dwarf (between issue 200 and 209 there was a big article on creating a chapter by Ian Pickstock) while trying to come up with a chapter name and a striking scheme that would look good on the table and it just came to me as far as the name, icon and armour colour go.

The marine/veteran markings are a variation on the Blood Angels (different colour helmets for each specialisation with black being added to veteran helmets. My avatar pic is a Veteran Assault Marine, although I suppose that would be Vanguard now ) and the company is denoted by pauldron trim a la codex style and also an icon on things like vehicles and powerfists and such.

The main problems I have/had were the squad markings and the vehicle schemes, although I think I have the vehicle issue sorted now.

Also had a bit of a scheme switch in the command structure (Libbys with black armour, chaplains with white and red helmets, techs with metal and apothecaries with dark red) which I only decided on recently.

Fluff however is a completely different kettle of fish

I've scrapped so many ideas over the years that I'm beginning to think i'll never come up with anything (including a DA founding whose training cadre were ambushed and replaced by fallen, but someone else beat me to the punch on that :cuss ).

Ah yes, I remember that article! It was very helpful, I can't believe I haven't been looking at that for some tips haha. I just think for me I need to decide on something and stick with it (but something that appeals to me, of course :cuss ). I've always liked the Blood Angels markings myself, so maybe I'll use something to that effect. Thanks for the advice!

Well here as promised, some pics of my WIP Apothecary with scratchbuilt Narthecium.

The drill is actually a piece of a snapped pin vice bit.

And as an added bonus here are some pics of a WIP Techmarine (although I'm not too happy with the servo-arm and therefore may not use him when he's done :cuss )

I will try and get some more pics of other stuff up in the next few days, until then keep the C & C coming :D

Some more pics here, mostly PIP.

Captain

gallery_39897_5762_539749.jpg

Needs a few finishing touches and a backpack.

Termie Chaplain

gallery_39897_5762_1440924.jpg

Again needs a few touch ups and I need to figure out an approach to the scrollwork.

Assault squad

gallery_39897_5762_1016127.jpg

Pretty much finished except for a couple of pistol hands.

I'd just like to add that by the time I'm done all gun barrels will be drilled, as I know this can be a bit of a bugbear :)

Comments and criticism if you have either :)

I really like the look of the assault squad. It's nice when three or more colors are utilized well in the scheme of the army's look: I think you pulled that off very well. And the pose of the Captain is pretty dynamic, looks like he's about to deliver a final blow from the Power Axe after he's done blasting his enemy with that Storm Bolter  .

@ Brother Ragnil: Thanks. I have tried really hard to keep the scheme unified across the army and I'm hoping it'll all look good together.

Ok. I have some more pics here of my nigh on completed bike squad and my first dread.

Rear Fairing

Never liked the back end of the marine bike, so I just added a spare shoulder pad to make a more rounded fairing.

Dread

gallery_39897_5762_99122.jpg

Overall I'm pretty happy with this. Also the first time I've tried painting letters so small, which I think came out pretty well :D

These are PIP at the moment, well except the dread who I think is done

C&C welcomed.

Ok. Another set of pics of another squad in progress (need to do the sarge and ML guy).

Heavy Bolter

I might go back to these guys when I'm done with the army and give them a few touch ups, but overall I'm happy with the squad so far.

I'm having a bit of an issue though because I keep switching squads and am failing to finish any of them -_-

Next set of pics will be the WIP custom Sternguard squad. After that I'll go back to the first Tac squad from the start of the blog for a long overdue update :)

Comments and Criticism welcomed :)

P.S. Just like to point out that all these guys are metal, which made them a pain in the ar$

To anyone who has been waiting for an update.

I've been quite ill these past few weeks and pretty much lost my mojo as far as painting and modelling go, but I do hope to have something to show you guys in the next couple of weeks <_<

So please keep comments and criticism flowing

Further to my last post I'm afraid it might be a while till I can do any updates due to a severely broken collarbone.

Will try to get back to it soon.

And thanks to everyone who showed an interest ^_^

Well better late than never, here is the next update featuring the Sternguard :D

Well the VERY PIP Sternguard that is :(

A theme I wanted to run through the unit was Corvus Helms (Mk6) throughout, along with older marks of Armour (including an attempt to make my own Mk4/Mk5 bits, which didn't go great :) )

Anyway without further ado here are the pics:

Sternguard Sgt.

gallery_39897_5762_271546.jpg

This guy is made from the front half of the Black Reach Captain, combined with some standard Tactical bits and some GS.

Sternguard 1

gallery_39897_5762_376670.jpg

Just a standard pose, with a Combi-Melta. There are also some GS studs on his left leg, to represent a greave of Mk5/early Mk6 armour.

Sternguard 2

gallery_39897_5762_76038.jpg

This one is made of the same parts as the previous, with some reposing of the legs and Studs on the right pauldron. He is priming a grenade in his right hand.

Sternguard 3

gallery_39897_5762_697593.jpg

Again, reposed legs and this time my attempt at a Mk3/Mk4 Chestplate. Also holding a knife in his right hand and armed with a Combi-Melta.

Sternguard 4

gallery_39897_5762_321924.jpg

This one is primarily made from a Berserker body and equipped with a drum-fed (2nd Ed.) Bolter and a Bolt Pistol. The backpack is in fact an old Chaos pack with I have shortened the exhaust struts on in order to make an older looking loyalist pack, I have another of these which will be attached to Sternguard 3.

Sorry the pics are so dark, I will try and brighten them up a bit in Photoshop and will add a few more once I have the armour up to White.

C&C if you got it ;)

(Reason for Edit: Better pictures)
