Recommended Posts

Alright, even though my last post on this did not prove to popular, here is a quick update on my drop pod.

So I already know I need to make the Claw's "forearm" thinner, which will be done soon. Once everything is done I will add the weathering from coming through the atmosphere (burn marks, soot stains, etc.), but as it stand now do you think I chipped the paint on the Tyrant's claw and the blue stripe to much? Also should I add more chips to the metallic portions?

One last quick picture.

Can you spot the new addition to my paint area? :)

I think the chipping on the blue stripe and the metal parts is fantastic.

Regarding your site idea, I would love to post my Fire Angels on such a site / thread / blog whatever. Would be cool If we could find a technic geek who could set us up with a site/ forum. I myself, am not very gifted in this regard ;)

Can't spot the new toy unfortunately :(

I'm a technical kinda guy if you need a hand with anything website related.

The effects look excellent mate, plenty of chipping on there, just get the oil and soot on there now! :)

Well I know this isn't Astral Claw related, but another one of my marine models made it onto the GW site today. They even used it as the cover photo for the post, a Ultramarine Tyranid Hunter.

I sent them that picture over a year ago, I had pretty much given up on the idea that they would use it. I painted that guy for the 2012 Chicago Golden Demons, he was a finalist in the 40k Single Mini category. I painted him within the week before the event. I decided I had time left over after finishing my main entry and really liked this sculpt, I had also been replaying Space Marine at the time, which you might be able to tell that the placement of the gold armor plates is pretty heavily inspired form that video game.

You say that like it's a bad thing. I'm all for a touch of gold on a space marine- it's :cuss classy looking.  A suit of astartes plate isn't some disgusting piece of flak armor that gets rolled off an assembly line, shot to :cuss, tossed aside and reissued.  Astartes plate is an heirloom- passed on between brother to brother as they fall in battle, faithfully restored to working order, and embellished with details with every passing decoration.  The marine inside is essentially a monk, it's true, but his astartes battle plate? It's his shrine, his altar to warfare.  The imperium is the catholic church on mega steroids- you honestly think there isn't going to be some gold slapped on to stuff? Besides that game is a good way to kill some time with good old fashioned pvp, and playing space marine dress up.

Seriously though, congrats on your tyrannic war veteran making the GW page, that's fantastic!

Man, what an amazing thread. Lean, clean, well-formed Marines that radiate a sort of grizzled, professional menace without ever approaching gaudy or overdone - exactly the sort of high-class work I'd expect to see from a fellow MSU grad. Great job, and congrats on the feature on GW!

Well my first Drop Pod is done and man what a project. Almost the entire thing was painted in pieces before being put together. Not my favorite thing to paint but it all pays off in the end, and I have at least one more to paint for this army at some point so I might as well accept it.

It was a challenge to try and come up with a pattern and scheme for this. I knew I wanted to have the Claw on all of the doors and I also wanted it to be mostly silver. The challenge was figuring out how to incorporate the blue. I didn't want to do the typical thing of painting select panels blue since that doesn't gel with the FW design of using stripes and shapes plus I had seen some examples of an Astral Claw pod painted that way it and looked way to blue. They are primarily silver and it reflects their cold, logical way of approaching situations so I wanted to keep the blue an accent color at most. Unfortunately FW has ZERO examples of an Astral Claw pod so I had to make it up on my own. I really liked the Minotaurs one with the arrow head painted behind the chapter symbol on the door so settled on a simple blue line. Once I was all done I realized that when the doors are open there is almost no blue on it, so after playing around in Photoshop with some pics I took of it I added the two smaller diagonal lines on each fin.

This was also my first attempt at scorching and weathering on such a large model. I limited the weathering to soot and chips and dings since I figured there wouldn't be much in the way of oil or rust on something that just plummeted through the atmosphere and I have to imagine they keep them in pretty good shape while stowed away on the ships.

Let me know what you think, comments and criticisms welcome.

Great stuff as always. Like the drop pod, especially the interior detailing. The weathering and chipping on the blue is just right, I imagine the main silver is like the general colour of the armour and therefore tougher, the blue would wear off easier, if that makes sense?

I think the outside of the pod could maybe do with a touch more blue, perhaps on the recessed parts of the doors. Depends if you're planning a few more pods really, I can't see all pods being painted identically, they'll all be slightly different to differentiate between squads, companies etc. If there were a few together and some featured more blue then it'd look less plain.

Please take that as the tiny, minuscule piece of constructive criticism that it is. I love your Astral Claws. So much in fact that I'm going to sneakily print myself off a poster at work when nobody is around sweat.gif
