Great thread, great work. Although my Huron is definitely leading a Chaotic army, I respect what you've done here and think it works great. I have some Wolfy style Red Corsairs myself and find their imagery works great in the army.

I'd kill for your rhino hatch template,it's awesome!

love the power swords too.

@Battlebrother, thanks, I was getting worried that no one was watching this. It's good to hear and helps movitvate.

i've noticed a huge improvment and I feel I am still learning.

@Prot, Its good to see another Red Corsair player. I went through your gallery, some pretty impressive stuff you got there. Do you have a thread I canit seem to find one, I'd really like to follow your progress.

As for the wolfy list, they are perfect and really close to how i want to play them. Huron's wolves. Now since I havn't played a game since 5th nor have i bought the new chaos codex, i know nothing of the new chaos, but I heard that Huron is now pretty bad @ss. Still not sure if the new codex is geared to my play style, but I guess i just have to read it to find out.

Thanks, I so glad I made a mold of the top hatch, cutting it out of plasticard was a pain.

I just recently started on the second hatch, some progress:

More pics... I only had a little time so I just did some touches to the power swords. Im not sure I like the shine of the sword. i think I'll put add a layer of matte coat over it.

Thanks for the compliment Styrofoam.

Actually no, I don't have a real Red Corsairs thread going as I went back to my old 3rd edition army, Iron Warriors, but it doesn't feel a heck of a lot like Iron Warriors in 6th. I try though, but I like the idea of doing whatever I want to, and I am contemplating going back to the Red Corsairs as I have so much invested in them in the new stuff.

I have 3 Forgefiends that need to be assembled/painted. I need to decide which Legion/chapter before going any further and I look to threads like yours for inspiration, but like you said Red Corsair armies are ultra-rare.

I love the paint scheme of the army. It is fairly difficult but worth it when the figs are done. Huron is fairly good in this codex, but until  I started Red Corsairs in 5th edition,  I really always identified with Chaos Legions and not so much a -chapter- or renegade marines. I'm still working on it.  I'll see if I change gears enough to warrant a thread on the Red Corsairs again. :)

I'll continue to follow your stuff though, again it's great inspiration!

I never thought my stuff inspired anyone, I mostly post to improve and get some movitation. I tend to fall out or never finish anything.

Because it is hard to find RC players i don't have many sources to look from. I'm constantly looking for new ideas and input.

I really enjoy this guy you painted

The red is soo rich and ruby like. you have to give me your secret

Honestly, I wish I could tell you how I did that red. I know it started with a mix of Scab and Blood Angels red, and was diluted with a good pinch of brown ink. I just can't remember the ratios.

I know it was also finished with a glaze of ogre skin brown wash.  I often make these red paint batches up and I never write them down which is really too bad because I have this issue with my Blood Pact IG which are hard to replicate (posted in IG section) and now I ran out of the red. I don't know why I am just never happy with red straight out of the bottle.

Its a shame. I have the same problems sometimes, "how did I do that!?"

Anywho

I tried a different approach to painting heads. Im trying for more of a pale look. I used tallern flesh and mixed SW grey in for highlights. I also tried to do stubble. It's my first attempt and i think i just need more practice.

let me know what you think and which you like best? any links to good tutorials on faces and hair would be great.

Thanks Tanith,

Its a good question. Through my adventures with the Red Corsairs, I've come to the conclusion that the RCs are not chaos. I don’t even think of them as Traitors or Renegades. I think of Huron as a monarch and the Maelstrom His Kingdom to Defend; the Red Corsairs, his Royal Guard. But instead of being called King he named himself Tyrant. The Tyrant of Badab. The Imperium was threatened by his power and unjustly removed him from his throne. All titles and records removed and was named Heretic and enemy.

The Astral Claws seperated and formed the Red Corsair's. Like any monarch with their kingdom lost, He Fights Back. Builds an army with anything he can take from the plate of the imperial table. All their training and Ideals are still the same, except that Huron is the true Lord of the Maelstrom and The emperior is a Lie. The RC's defend the maelstrom and take what they need.

So they still have the iconography but mostly painted black, or covered with a Red "X" (which I haven't done yet). I believe that Huron would also keep their symbols as a mocking jesture.

I believe that they would still use seals and ranks and tactics that they were trained on for 1000's of years. They are still Marines, but labeled evil and heretics from a unjust system. i dont believe that they are mutated or use mutations. They do not worship the Chaos gods. Nor the emperior. There is fluff where they worked with traitor legions, when it suit them but never joined Chaos.

As Pirates the would have taken Weapons, armour and even Geenseed to suit their needs. That's why I try to mix up the chapter symbols.

I hope that answers you question a bit

I started out Chaos, But it didn't fit for the play style I was going for. I have read IA9 but not IA10 so not sure how they ended it. I also haven't read the new Chaos Codex. From other fluff I read, Huron was tainted by chaos, but I believe that to be propaganda. The Victors write the history. I believe he is power hungry Madman, but also tacital military genius. I read he allied him self with the Night Lords to steal Geenseed. and also read He keeps berzerkers on board his ship when needed. I have never read anything about deamons, oblitorators, nurgle, or mutations.

I found this an interesting read:

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Corsairs

I just replace the "corruption to chaos" as propaganda. It should read "betrayal of the emperior", "enemy to the empire", or even "Rebelion"

Most of the Chaos are recruits added to the ranks. Just as the Space Wolves were added.

So yes, undoubtedly some Red Corsairs who worship chaos. But I do not believe the original 200 were corrupted.

My first unit is Chaos Space marines, My second unit is Space Marines, This unit I'm working on Is Space Wolves. I think My third unit will be a mix of new Recuits with the "X" on them.

Thanks for gettting me to think about it again. I will prolly give IA10 a read and check out the new Codex. I just dont want any Hellchickens or brutes, which limits its effectiveness.

This is very much Alan Bligh's take on things in the Badab War books. Basically everything is simply point of view and no one knows what really happened (much of this information was deleted from Imperial records).

He wrote IA9 and IA10 right?

I had these thoughts before he wrote them, and I really like his take on it. Like I said I haven't read IA10 so I don't how he finished it. But your right it is point of view. As an Astral Claw I don't see them corrupted by Chaos. I do see using them, for a desparate purpose...  As pawns for Revenge.

As a loyalist I brand them mutant Heretics.

Yeah I say go bald! he looks better IMO with that "I will rip your face off and use it as a loin cloth" kind of way!

Per my pervious comment on improvment through your project it reminded me of mine (Just alot quicker as i am a bit of a

neanderthal) you can check out my old Soul Drinker thread here:

like you I have a problem with the official fluff!

Of your heads, I really like the first, second, and fifth ones.

One thing I really don't like about how the fluff has changed has been that any space marines who turn away from the emperor automatically become tzeentch, khorne, slaanesh, or nurgle worshipers. Non-partisan space marines just simply don't exist in 40k anymore. Even worshiping chaos undivided is no longer a valid orientation.

^^^ Exactly, It's not competitive at all. So I switched Codexes, Mind you I'm feeling my army is heading too much Into Space Wolves. I do need to mix it up more. TBH I'm kinda holding out for the New Space Marine Codex.

@BattleBrother, lol, I've been painting for 6 or so years, so my progress has been over time lol. I'm still learning new things and maybe one day I'll finish this army. I'll check out your blog, Thanks for posting it.

So I just bought a 16" light tent kit. It included everything in this photo
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41-wVFhGEqL._SY300_.jpg

(looking at the photo it looks like I had mine upside down)

So I'm taking some test shots:

This one with a white background
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/21/498657_sm-Red%20Corsairs%2C%20Wolf%20Guard.jpg

and blue background
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/21/498658_sm-Red%20Corsairs%2C%20Wolf%20Guard.jpg

The kit also came with black and red backgrounds, but they dont work.

Let me know which you prefer, then I test lighting

For some reason, that I can't figure out, my red seems washed out by the photos. I assure you that there is shading and highlights on the red.

Let me know what you guys think?

I really enjoy seeing your work on these guys. The red is the perfect shade and the details really make them pop. They may be a little "wolfy" for my taste, but the crew of the Wolf Fenris had to go somewhere. ;)

Looking forward to seeing more. (Also Brother Lemmy makes me chuckle).
