Hey guys.
Sorry for the vast delay in posting, but I am back.

First off I'll show you guys the entrenched Gun base is at. Still haven't added the sand bags.

med_gallery_33843_5272_972571.jpg

Here is a frontal picture with the added details. Much better?

med_gallery_33843_5272_28897.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_483972.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_1034596.jpg

Finished base, without the sand bags on obviously.

med_gallery_33843_5272_340529.jpg

So yeah. Moving on.
Landspeeder.
This one escalated quite quickly.
I'd already finished the base so I've just been painting it.

I decided on salamanders.
I think green and black blends well with he grey and brown of the base, without standing out enough to be jarring like the yellow would have been.

med_gallery_33843_5272_1095897.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_1091476.jpg

I've only finished the grey bit. Everything else needs work
The tilled section needs to be layered until it mimicks a marbel effect I've used on another terrain piece which I will post another time soon.
Also the mud effect needs to be finished.
The Green and black needs highlighting.
And so on and so forth.

So what do you guys think?

Thanks for looking!

Hi guys. Just a quick one.

In one of my posts I was talking about casting some stuff for making terrain.

I picked up a plaster cast kit at a charity shop (which was pretty random, I'll admit), so I thought I'd try it out.

So I grabbed a couple of the Rhinos from my 'car pool,' and gave it a go.
Needless to say it didn't go very well...

med_gallery_33843_5272_683479.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_152519.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_336398.jpg

So, I know when casting you're meant to tap/vibrate the mould/surface to aid in releasing the air bubbles...
Didn't really seem to work though.
The good thing about plaster of Paris is that it is fairly malleable, so it was fairly easy to get rid of those crazy air bubbles.

med_gallery_33843_5272_819473.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_556923.jpg

Looking a'ight for ruined vehicles?
That is what I thought! So I continued on, but it wasn't long until I found another problem.
I'll get to that in a moment.

With these new found trashed vehicles, I thought I'd do some more themed terrain.

Enter the explosion crater;

med_gallery_33843_5272_961372.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_822611.jpg

This terrain piece, like all my others, tells a a little story about what has been happening on this battlefield (in relation to my armies).
In this piece the Space Marine (Probably a Marines Malevolent captain) lies dead in the crater left behind by an explosion.

The cause of the explosion? The destruction of his command Rhino;

med_gallery_33843_5272_162355.jpg

I love the concept.
I was going to add large chunks of shrapnel to make it look like it had one of its flanks and part of the under carriage blown out by a mine or something. This would visual explain why it is in the position it is in.
The Marine would be one of the casualties thrown clear from the wreckage.

Nice concept. Here is where we return to the aforementioned problem.

PLASTER OF PARIS WONT GLUE TO ANYTHING FOR LOVE NOR MONEY!

Seriously! I tried Super glue, Plaster of Paris, Polly filler, green stuff, milliput, PVA...
You can't pin it either, or it just crumbles.

So this terrain piece will likely be the last to be finished as I figure out a way to fix the rhino to the base, or just re- model the crater a bit to make it look like one created by an artillery shell (maybe from the entrenched gun position).

Ah well!

Next time there will be two new items on show!
Both painting in progress!

Thanks for reading!

I think I plan on putting something here. Suggestions as to what are welcome. So far all I can think of is a crash barrier.

Anyway, moving on to....

Street sign. Post box. 'Shop-a-Heretic' booth. Tardis.

nurgle rhino!

I thought exactly the same thing.

WOW!
Most replies in rapid succession ever!

I'll get to my update soon, but first I'd like to thank you guys for taking the time to/ continuing to read this!
Also for all the comments, suggestions and feedback!

Love the brick paving, the shade helps immensely, have you considered a watered down bieltan green wash in the recesses?

Add a bit of aged contrast to the bricks?

Cheers for the support Jasp!

That is the plan, of sorts.
I have no doubt that this board will get damaged in use.
Every time a tile gets torn (they're made from some foamy cardboard material) I'll be replacing it with a new tile.
The replacements will be 'cracked' and painted to look aged.

I'll certainly give Biel Tan wash a try when I do! :smile.:

I thought exactly the same thing.

Seems people like the doggy rhino!

In future, if I do try to recreate the effect, I'll make sure to use something other than Plaster of Paris.
That way we could end up with a barnacle encrusted/ Nurgle Rhino!

If/ When I do this, I'll be sure to post it up for you guys to see!

Back to the update.

On my post of the WiP of the crashed land speer I mentioned the tiles would be painted in a similar fashion to one of my other terrain WiP's.

Well, here it is;

med_gallery_33843_5272_963584.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_443916.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_547108.jpg

Yep, it is your bog standard Imperial building from some of GW's cities of death terrain.

The tiles were my first attempt at simple marble.

The tiles start off brown (I undecorated the building brown for some reason...),
Painted over in Dheneb stone, a light dry brush of Dheneb and Skull white, Washed with Army Painter Soft Tone and then I repeated the process until I was relatively happy.
Then gloss varnished (which you can't see in the pictures).

The tiles look okay, but too simple for a realistic marble effect.
I'm going to leave these ones as they are. but in future I'll be trying to throw different colours into the mix to give it a more layer effect.
Also, I'll be making it more bright by adding layers of very light bone.

If that doesn't go well I'll try black marble...

That is all for now.
I might post another update later on/ or in the next few days.

In the meantime, feel free to comment, suggest things and leave feedback!
Especially if you have experience painting marble that you'd like to pass on to me.

Peace out!

As promised I am back with yet another project I've been working on.

Do you guys remember the Battle for Macragge starter box set?

When I started working for Workshop in 2009 this was the starter set that was out. When Black Reach hit the open copy was just thrown into the store bitz box; which is as awesome as it sounds, and something I dearly miss now I don't work there.

Anyway, during that time I managed to get my hands on some of the Bitz I'd missed.
That included the awesome crashed Aquila.

So I've finally got round to painting it!

med_gallery_33843_5272_1066425.jpg

The model is already lightly textured, but I did add some extra rubble to tie in with my Urban ruin theme.

med_gallery_33843_5272_1108536.jpg

The metals are done in a rough fashion to help give an aged and beaten feel.
The whole thing was base coated brown (dark/scorched),
Then extremely heavy drybrush of tin bitz,
Then a lighter coat boltgun metal,
Then even lighter coat of chainmail,
and finally very lightly with mithril silver.

This was done on all the ship parts.
Those parts that have colour were painted on top this...

med_gallery_33843_5272_1404350.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_1462168.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_421949.jpg

The red is just a base of foundation red, and then progressive layers of red; from scad to blood.

For those wondering I used the Forgeworld one as the inspiration for my colour scheme.

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120205053318/warhammer40k/images/d/dc/AquilaLander3.png

So that's another project added to my huge list of things to do....
Yay!

I jumped a head so sorry if you sorted this out, but pva the bit you want to the base with a fair bit. Then maybe paper mache it to the up thr thr edges so it locked it in place?

But great stuff love the re worked howizter? Or 25 pounder?

The bubbles on the rhino would be awesome for a nurgle army :)

Woo I'm back... though only with a little update.

I've been busy trying to buy battle fleet Gothic stuff (so, so hard these days!)
I also posted a new board game review on The science of selling yourself short - http://darkhazzl3.blogspot.com/
To top it all off my mouse is playing up.

But I digress. Back to hobbying!

I had not thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion! I will give it a go and get back to you!

Honestly I have no idea, though I do thing it was originally a Howitzer. Couldn't be sure though. I bought it as a small child when collecting green, grey and tan plastic army figures was all the rage haha!

If I ever get any more plaster casting material I will try out a nurgle rhino for everyone.
No promises on me managing to get hold of some though!

Anyway, the small update.

More painting on the Landspeeder

med_gallery_33843_5272_177632.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_333329.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_1375360.jpg

Just layers and some highlighting done. Also some weathering.
I'm really pleased with how the mud effect came off on, especially on the destroyed wing in the bottom of picture three.
I did overdo the highlighting on the intact wing though...

The photo quality does wash out the clarity of the highlights.
That said I don't want to go over the top. It isn't meant to be the brightest of places...

Next steps for this are;
Aadding the gold and brass trim to the destroyed floor tile and Landspdeer respectively.
Adding some Salamander Iconography to the hull of the Landspdeer,
Painting the interior and the engine.
I'll finish it all off with some battle damage on the speeder, water effects for the mud and gloss varnish for the marble floor tile.

So yeah. That is all for now.

Feedback welcome, and as always...

Thanks for reading!

Hi guys. Sorry about the lack of updates these past few weeks.
I've been researching my next few issue of 'The Cardboard Cartographer' (link in my sig), and by researching, I mean I've playing a lot of boardgames!

I'm back on the hobby trail.

I've got some BFG stuff in the works,
I'm also working on my marble technique.
While the the tiles on my terrain are okay, I think I can do better, and in fact need to do better if I'm going to be doing it on a more visible scale.
So I've got a few basses with some plasticard glued on to do some test basses.

In-between layers of marble I'll try and paint some other goodies to show off here.
Might try and finish those Ultramarines, my bloodbowl team and the lampposts I started way back.

I'll keep you updated (though you'll have to visit the The Underhive Hero for my non-B&C friendly stuff).

Stay tuned for updates.....relatively soon!

So that progress post is here!
Sort of.

I have been distracted by numerous things.
Mainly;
Setting up other projects for the future,
Other hobby commitments (games and table top games), and their associated blogs (There will be a new issue of The Cardboard Cartographer very soon),
Apathy. as always.

I kinda got back into the painting groove.

Since the guys who follow this do so mainly for progress on the projects already started here, I'm going to start with my marble test basses.
(This will make this post appear in a different order to those on
The Underhive Hero just in case you follow both).

So lets start this party, shall we?

So I grabbed a couple of basses, primed them (one white, one black) and started to experiment.
It became apparent early on that the white one worked better for a stone/bone type marble.

med_gallery_33843_5272_599412.jpg

I honestly didn't know what I was doing here, except for using a lot of layers... I googled. Oh how I googled.
And I saw this -
http://www.wampforum.com/VB4/content.php?r=2565-Orki-s-marble-tutorial

It seemed reasonable so I thought I'd give it a go

Using the colours in the guide (or close enough at any rate) I came up with this for the first step.

med_gallery_33843_5272_56727.jpg

I know. The picture isn't that helpful. But seriously. There is no easy way to photograph that thing haha.

So then I moved on to the veins and glaze/washes...

med_gallery_33843_5272_354094.jpg

Looking back it isn't really that bad. I think using such a dark brown glaze was a mistake, and I should have used such a less vivd purple.
I think in future attempts I'll use something darker/ mix it with brown.

however, at the time I made the stupid attempt of carrying on instead of calling it a day....

med_gallery_33843_5272_745024.jpg

Totally ruined it.

So there you have it! Hobbing isn't always bells whistles and happy days. Sometimes painting ends in abject failure.
Though I have learned a thing or two.

Back to the drawing board with the marble then!

Moving on.

In my last post I mentioned I'd been looking into sorting out my Battlefleet Gothic stuff.
Well, I know it isn't strictly appropriate but...

med_gallery_33843_5272_225581.jpg

Boom. I bought some BFG stuff (mainly of evilbay).
This is the Start of my Grey Knight Battlefleet to accompany my Grey Knight army which will be resurrected. One day. maybe.

Also. This guy

med_gallery_33843_5272_185733.jpg

Yes. That is a Squat in Exo armour. I know it isn't board legal if I'm doing an army of them, BUT, this guy isn't for a Squat army.
No my friends, he is for Grey Knight army. He is my counts as Jakereo (because seriously!? Monkey/ape/orang-utan things?).

I've made a few of these, but this guy is by far my favourite.

So yeah.
That is all I got for now. I Have also been working on some Escher Gangers that will, in time, also count as Slaaneshi Cultists.
But for those guys, you'll have to keep your eyes on
The Underhive Hero!

That is all for now.
I have some other long term projects in the works, but I'm trying to resist getting into them to much.
I want to finish my board and a workable army. I really want to get invested in playing War Games again.

Comments and Criticism welcome. Any suggestions for a relatively simple marble effect are more the welcome!

Thanks for reading!

BFG!!! BFG!!! wish I could find mine. Cool up date.

Wooo!

If you do I'd love to see them deeathspecter

On another random update-esq note; I bought some tanks yesterday.

2 Leman Russ's and a Bane blade. They are in really bad shape, but I only payed £30 for all of them.

This is be the starting point of a future project, which I wont be starting for a good long while.

But it should be a fun challenge when I do!

Yup. they are beat up, missing parts, badly painted and all that kind stuff.

I reckon I can repair them....but if after a good while I'm getting nowhere, I'm going to junk them and turn them into terrain.

Either way, at

Can we has update plz?

Yes!

A short one, but for me, personally, a very satisfying one.

med_gallery_33843_7957_838066.jpg

med_gallery_33843_7957_893202.jpg

Yep. I finally finished painting something, so technically this is a HOH post ;)

I don't do this very often, especially when it is something so large. Also I struggle to get motivated for something I've started afetr I have put it to one side for so long.

Woo!

Yes. I am back on the bandwagon.... hopefully I'll stay on to finish a few things.
While this is a good start I have a lot to do, and a lot to think about.

New BRB for 40k
New Codex for the Grey Knights

But yeah.
Hopefully there will be more soon

C&C welcome as always!

Thanks for the support guys!
Always appreciated.

It spured me on to do some more... hit a snag on the way.

Anyone remember this guy from a while back?

med_gallery_33843_5271_182701.jpg

It is my tweaked Coteaz.
This depicts Coteaz later in his career; the trials of being a Malleus Inquisitor start to take its toll.

Blah blah story blah; Starting to lean toward using questionable methods to enforce the will of the Emperor.

Anyway. I decided to start painting this guy... especially with the new Grey Knight codex out (I haven't read it yet =[ )
I wanted to paint him in line with the 'ageing' idea in this potential future.

So I prepared him for painting...

med_gallery_33843_5271_245163.jpg

and I picked up some Vallejo Liquid metals for the job.

med_gallery_33843_5272_880108.jpg

Anyone used these?

Well I hadn't, and still haven't.

I did learn a few things though...

Liquid metal is alcohol based.... and has a bunch more metal chips in than your metallic acrylics.

What does this mean?

A ) You can't thin the paint with water. It doesn't react well with the alcohol, or the metal.
You end up with dry paint and a brush covered in stiff metal chips..
On that note
B ) It is really hard to clean in water because of this.
C ) Also if water makes constant contact with the paint in the pot it will rust. Seriously.

So you need alcoholic thinner and alcoholic cleaner.

This throws up another problem
You can't use sable brushes. The combination of alcohol and heavy metal will ruin them.

So I've now purchased the thinner, the cleaner and a set of high quality synthetic brushes...

Should have Googled that a bit better the first time round...

So yeah... nothing new. for the B&C yet.
I did paint a test miniature for my Ork Bloodbowl team. I'll be posting its progress on The Underhive Hero - http://underhivehero.blogspot.co.uk/

For now that will have to do
