Looks Good liking the color.

Cheers fella!

I finally got my new painting stuff!

med_gallery_33843_5271_802678.jpg

So the Liquid Copper kind of looks liek this

med_gallery_33843_5271_647556.jpg

Lets get started!

med_gallery_33843_5271_151041.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5271_823455.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5271_174675.jpg

So far it is just the base Copper washed down with strong tone. The Cape is a couple of layers of foundation red.

Ready for the never ending layers of red!

  • 2 weeks later...

So I've been doing a fair whack of painting. Not that you can really tell, as it is just constantly layering progressive shades of red and black.

med_gallery_33843_5272_1396010.jpg

Here is a closer picture that shows off the layers a bit better...

med_gallery_33843_5272_537764.jpg

Wooo. Tedium

@Lionofjudah Yeah, it caught me out something fierce. But it is worth he investment as the the application is fantastic, but you have to be super aware of any imperfections your model may have, as it is a really fine coverage; thin layers but not washed out in any way. In future I'll be making 100% sure all surfaces are lightly sanded/filed and cleaned before I paint with it.

@deathspectersgt7 Aye, I agree. A classic combination I feel.

Anyway,
I have been painting, but as this terrain piece is large (it is times like this I wish I had invested in an airbrush) it is taking a while.

Especially when it comes to basing.

But, as promised, I have carried on. I will finish this!

So this was the start of last week, a day after posting;

med_gallery_33843_5272_964511.jpg

Just the various layers of grey
And then towards the end of last week (about Friday) I cracked on with the brown and a bit of weathering on the metals;

med_gallery_33843_5272_64219.jpg

A closer one

med_gallery_33843_5272_1077486.jpg

A close up of the metal

med_gallery_33843_5272_637261.jpg

The metal was easier than I'd anticipated.
The original layers were Brown > Tin Bitz > Boltgun metal > Chainmail > Brown/Black wash

So to bring it back up after the basing layers got on it I gave it a heavy drybrush of Boltgun Metal.
Then I washed it with a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Smoke and Nulan Oil Wash, and watered down a fair amount. It gives it a very worn/oily brownish tint.
After that Its drybrushing Boltgun and Chainmail and that's it.

Still some work to be done.
I've done some light weathering but I want a bit more; chipped paint, rents and tears maybe.
I want to work on the front piece a bit more; better smoke damaged glass, maybe a bit of blood splatter on the cockpit.

Toying with rust, and adding some brass details with verdigris. Thoughts?

Thanks for reading and keeping up with me on this.
I've committed myself to at least 1 hour a week working on this. Going well so far.

In the meantime there are some new updates of other hobby variety on http://underhivehero.blogspot.co.uk/ also I've put up a new board gaming blog on http://darkhazzl3.blogspot.co.uk/ so check those out if you can't wait until the next update.

Thanks for reading and I'll hopefully have some more for you soon!

WOoOo.

I finished the template for the freehand

med_gallery_33843_5272_531454.jpg

It is the Imperial Navy insignia (no wings version)!
Now to make it pretty.

I'm not sure what to go for;

A cracked paint effect
or
A marble effect (stone/white)
or
A marble effect (green)

Thoughts welcome here. Whichever is chosen it will be suitably 'roughed up' to fit with the rest of the piece.

These phtos have thrown up a few bits here and there on the ed and black that need touching up, so I'll have to go back and do that as well.

Ta' for looking guys!

Thanks for the replies guys!

1 of one and one of the other. Hmmm...

I think I'll do a test cracked paint piece and a test normal piece to see what they look like.

I think I might try using Games Workshops Agrellan Earth for the cracked and peeling paint. if it goes well it may well be a feature on choice sections of the aquila (scorch marks).

As for the shiny, marble effect then. I'm thinking of something along the lines of my xenos hunters banner...of which I don't have a picture right now :/
I'll throw one up tomorrow. Been busy painting my blood bowl ork team today (They will make an appearance on the underhive hero tomorrow).

Any other opinions and/or suggestions welcome in the meantime!

  • 2 weeks later...

So. Basically, I'm lazy and haven't been out to get the Agrellean Earth paint form GW.
So in the meantime I thought I'd keep this painting train rolling.

I decided to starting painting my Sisters of Battle... well... sort of.

I started my Aegis defence line.

Soft tone and Agrax Earthshade wash.

med_gallery_33843_5957_35520.jpg

Admittedly it isn't impressive progress, but like all these things I've been painting recently it seem to take forever.
Just the long pieces and tower to wash and then I'll move on to fixing the metals and then some actual painting work.

Woo!

Woah. These look great! I don't think I've seen anyone else spend this much time on the Aegis and gun, and it really makes them something special. They feel like part of your army, and the subtle icons, banners, etc. really pay off. And that gunner, wow. Great stuff. I even really like the way the deneb stone looks. I can't wait to see this completed!

EDIT: Also, I think Agrax Earthshade is about the best thing in the history of ever.

Hi, hi.

Thanks for the feedback deathspectersgt7 and JeffTibbetts.

I feel like rushing this kind of ruins the whole overall look of the army, you know?
They are quite large, and while they are not a focal point, I fear they would stand out like if I didn't give them some love.

That and I really do like my Quad Gun haha!

So on to some painting.

I would have liked to have made more progress, but recently I re-watched every season of scrubs.
I know... not even ten days ago when I alst posted I hadn't started the binge...

Anyway I completed the wash and progressive drybrushing stage of the Aegis defence line

med_gallery_33843_5957_870735.jpg

While I was doing this I cracked on with the marble tiles on the base of the Quad gun

med_gallery_33843_5957_1175276.jpg

I started the gold icons too, because; why not?

med_gallery_33843_5957_795485.jpg

The wall / tile mix is identical;
Denheb stone > Drybrush Karak & Screaming Skull > Add Ceramite white > progressively more white.
The only difference is that the wash on the wall is a brown one after the first stage,

The tile's wash on the other hand is a sepia wash before the last couple of layers.

The gold is just Vallejo Liquid Copper with a couple of washes of Army Painter Strong Tone.
It needs some layers and highlights to make it a bit more gold.
I like my gold beaten and dirty though, so it wont be too bright when it is done.

Here is a picture of the both together with some better lighting

med_gallery_33843_5957_80120.jpg

In between layers drying I worked on the turret a little

med_gallery_33843_5957_404464.jpg

I'm liking how this is turning out.
The Purple is obviously flat and the wrong shade, but it is only foundation purple.
Many layers before that is done.

I thought I'd throw in a little action (ish) shot for fun.

med_gallery_33843_5957_497084.jpg

'Dat test sister model cameo.

That is all for now.
While I had the gold out I did some work on another piece, but I want to do some more on that before I post updates about it.

So until then, throw some feedback at me!
Thanks for checking in,

Let me know what you guys think.

Wow.

My last update was November 4th 2014.

Whilst I apologise for my disturbingly long absence, I can't say I'm too sorry about it.
Simply put, I just was not in the frame of mind to do anything constructive, and I clearly needed a break from...well...almost everything.

In the last 6 months I've been pushing myself towards a better place.
This sounds more dramatic than it needs to be, but basically I'm fine, and I feel better than I have done for a long time.

So much better in fact, that I started painting again.

So before my hiatus I was doing many a project.
I thought I'd start small to work myself back into things.

Enter the lampposts!

I clearly had an update in the pipeline back then, but obviously never got round to it.
So here is where I left off 6 months ago.

med_gallery_33843_5272_467272.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_35331.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_1009231.jpg

And today, I dusted them off (so much dust =[ ), and finally gloss varnished them!

med_gallery_33843_5272_1173535.jpg

I know it isn't the biggest update ever, but I have been painting other things.
Which you can see over on my personal blog 'here'
I've also been busy with my boardgaming blog/e-zine which you can visit 'here.'
I'll be updating my signature with all this stuff and more, so keep an eye out for that stuff too.

So. I plan to ease myself back into this.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy a trip down memory lane, and check out my other projects too.

It is good to be back :biggrin.:

Edited by DarKHaZZ13

Sounds like you had a rough ride, brother. I'm glad you're back! I had forgotten all about the Agrellan Earth experiment, and now I really want to see the results. :D

Nothing like getting back in the painting saddle after a while, is there?

Thanks guys!

It wasn't pleasent, but it wasn't all that bad in fairness.

Ahhh yes! I will have to dig that experiment out of the box it found itself in!

Aye, painting is always good when you can see the progress you're making.

Speaking of progress, I've had a little time of work recently with a bit fo s a stomach bug, so I managed to add the finishing touches to the lamp posts

med_gallery_33843_5272_212472.jpg

Just some white highlight sfor the glasses and a gentle drybrush/ stipple of Boltgun Metal ('dem old paints doe)

Thanks for checking in after all this time. It's awesome to see people still remmeber this stuff.
I'll have to start working on some other stuff soon!

Until then!
