The_Chaplain
I just went through the whole thread. Awesome conversion work. Very inspiring. Great motivation for working on my Hounds. Thanks for taking the time to look through the whole thread, and looking forward to seeing your Hounds' Sicaran being finished! Uploading a quick couple of pictures for your approval/disapproval today as I got a small break in between buzzing about to knock out a Skyhammer missile launcher conversion for the Dark Talon ---> Storm Talon conversion I've puttered around with. I removed the oversized GI Joe action figure style missiles from the dark talon missile launchers and replaced them with the typhoon missile launchers from the storm talon to get this end result. Personally, I'm pretty chuffed with the end result it looks a little more believable as a piece of military hardware now, and with 12 missiles per rack (24 in total) it looks like it can have a prolonged firefight on a 40k battlefield rather than 2 turns of shooting before having to scamper off. Obviously it needs some smoothing out and sanding; but this was some quick and dirty conversion work. Sadly, the other missile launcher will have to be on hiatus until I order more storm talon bits- since it takes a set of two to make 1 missile battery! I have managed to get some model work done in the last few evenings- but I'm gonna hold off on taking pictures of that til it's more concrete and interesting to look at(it's been primarily removing sculpted on details, sanding, etc). More pictures of stuff soon folks, I promise! The_Chaplain
i approve, sound logic behind the conversion too. Thanks Argent Aquila, I'm pretty pleased with the end result as well. Promised I was gonna get some pictures up, and here they are. Had an unexpected amount of downtime the last few afternoons and nights, so been trying to put my nose to the gridnstone at the hobby table. Plasmagun and meltagun from the GW resin bike upgrade pack cut and ready for magnetizing on 2 special weapons command squad bikers. The reliquary on the one torso has been filled with milliput; and once dry will be sanded and made to look like a locked triptych/reliquary accessory from the grey knights kit (with a pressmolded padlock). Removed the would be reliquary on that bikers legs, and drafting new embellishments to put on instead. Warpsmith to Master of the Forge conversion progress: removed the chaos star on the chest and the shrieking chaos skull belt buckle. I also removed the chaos bolt pistol from the arm, and the cabling from the shoulderpad. I honestly have no idea what I'm going to equip him with beside the conversion beamer. Perhaps a belt fed bolter/primarchs wrath and an auspex on a custom servo skull? The Confessor icon stuck out too far on the chaplain's crozius- so I sanded it down further so it would sit more flush against the former Enkomi mace head. The bolter straps made out of pure ProCreate putty were way too flimsy looking, so taking plasticard I made new straps and have been covering them with putty to simulate leather texture. I plan to do this with all the bolter straps I need to fabricate before adding things like chain link buckles and studs to round them out. The thicker strap is now more in line with GW plastic/resin ones. Sword brethren to Sternguard progression: I've done things like remove CCW arms (the lightning claw was a nightmare to remove in particular), gave mk VII kneepads to two of the sternguard so it wasn't a hodgepodge of armor marks on the model. Been adding studs to the appropriate models- turning one of the hodgepodgers into a full set of mk V. Also been removing templar specific symbols like the maltese cross on the necklaces and oblong shoulderpads and smoothing those either with putty or sanding. Lastly, I removed that cursed pre-molded combat knife! Praise the God Emperor! That's all for tonight folks, gotta get ready for dinner with a friend from out of town before he jets off again. Thanks for looking, comments and criticism, as always, are welcomed and ecouraged. The_Chaplain
Hello once again faithful followers and viewers! Tonight, I am diverging from the usual photo fodder of the recent updates to catalog a start point on a reclamation job on some tanks I have. Now normally, someone would say "I got these on ebay" or from a flea market. Nope. These were mine, back when I knew jack crap about the hobby; how to thin paints, proper weathering techniques, proper track assembly, etc; and I am determined to fix them up and get them ready for next year's ETL (alongside everything else in this thread). Embarassing as it is to put this on display; I'm calling this an act of penance to the machine spirits for hiding these in some box in a corner ashamedly rather than doing the right thing and fixing the mistakes of my naivety as soon as I was able and competent enough to. Vindicating the vindicators! I've replaced the tracks that were broken off this model, and removed all the premolded skulls. I am going to see about borrowing my friend's dremel/rotary tool in the future so I can get the gravel and gunk off the dozer blade and get the entire model sanded, fill in the seams on the model so it looks more like an actual tank, paint stripped (as best as can be done anyway), etc. In an act more egregious than flubbing up a plastic vindicator kit, in my youthful hobbying exuberance, I committed atrocities against a resin forgeworld vindie! Oh the shame! In the last few evenings, I have managed to remove resin vindicator parts from the completely foregone chassis it was on, and place it onto a rhino that was more readily repairable. I pinned the dozer blade to one of the "arms", removed the improperly assembled tracks, replaced 2 broken wheels with the corresponding wheels from the foregone chassis (which I have given considerable thought to modelling as a "vehicle destroyed" result with an apothecary tending to the survivors either as an objective marker or as part of a base for a flyer); as well as removed the premolded skull on the cannon housing. I desperately need to fix the gap between the vindicator parts and the rhino chassis, as well as fixing the warped dozer blade. I need to get whatever gunk that is on the dozer blade off as well (think it might be wood glue, good god emperor what did I do to these poor war machines?!) If I can fix these up nice and proper, I will try and get my hands on a couple more vindicators (maybe even a deimos "chubby puppy" vindie) for a Linebreaker Squadron for ETL IV. Work is going to be slow and infrequent for a while I'm sure- this week we are cleaning the house for my sister's extended visit and I have to make sure the hobby space is properly puppy proof- lest her mongrel gets ahold of another model! Until next time folks! The_Chaplain
Now that is love and dedication. Good luck with this little side project fella. Thanks brother, I think I'm going to need that luck, haha. Yes, this is very much a labor of love. Hopefully the end result will showcase that. Good luck with the tanks. I have been re-painting several of my tanks for about the last two years. Two Rhinos, a Razorback and two Land Raiders. I will finish them eventually. Looking forward to see the refurbished armor. Thanks! Hopefully by the time it comes to painting all this up I will have equipment like an airbrush to help with the large flat surfaces. as of yet, i'm deathly afraid of even touching the 2 rhinos and predator i have with paint for the same reasons you're fixing up yours. (minus the forgeworld stuff, of course, too afraid to even place the order ) best wishes! Thanks! (though to be honest, I didn't place the order- my friend was ordering stuff for his salamanders many moons ago, I just chipped in the money for the vindicator so he could get free shipping. I want to place an order for forgeworld myself sometime, but I might as well save my money and make it a big one and save myself on shipping). Yeah, vehicles can be daunting; but I'm determined to put my nose to the grindstone on these guys and make them shine. I've debated doing stuff like using Tamiya putty to create forge casting texture on the tank in the pre-paint stage like scale military hobbyists do. I've been reading a lot of hobby magazines, articles, books, etc. and experimenting with techniques might make this personal army project something even more special in the end. The_Chaplain
Sorry I haven't uploaded anything lately guys; been dealing with a myriad of things in real life-- and they pretty much all suck, and are draining me physically, emotionally and financially. Hopefully this rocky patch will pass soon, I'm about at the end of my rope, haha! Managing to sneak in some Table Time™ wherever I can, and to that end, I have some pictures for you all! Work on the elite devastator squad continues: I didn't notice this in my initial once over of the finecast models, but the bottom of this guys faceplate is friggin broken! Going to have to think of something to fix that; either a headswap or using something other than putty to fix it- I don't have the skill to sculpt sharp edges yet. Horse stance guy is the last veteran in this set, and I put on a piece of stretched putty to see how it might look with a flowy tabard. I'm still up in the air about it. it reminds me a little bit of the unlockable Master Crafted armor set from the Space Marine video game multi-player mode. I tossed my hat into the ring for this year's E Tenebrae Lux, backing up my spiritual brothers the Black Templars, and vowed to paint a "Cypher", here is the model pre-paint: And here is where he stands more or less currently: after basecoating, a first ink wash on the cloth, and beginnings of highlights and low lighting on the cloth: It's hard to see but the shoulder trim, key ring and belt buckle are all basecoated in Warplock Bronze- which will be brought up to a distressed copper color in the end if all goes well. The rope is P3's Trollblood base, followed by Scaly Green. I'm having a lot of problems with the copper/brass metallics for whatever reason. Hopefully I'll figure out what I'm doing wrong and get them to "pop". The plasma coil is basecoated with Macharite Red<?>, so I can try out OSL for the first time. The yellow shoulderpad (which is base coated with whatever that Iyanden yellow is) is really there for me to practice my crusade badge: I want to have this year's ETL badge on the opposite shoulderpad, to get some practice with white and red. The back- kinda hard to tell, but I'm using army painter skeleton for the robe basecoat, Seraphim Sepia for the ink wash, Kommando Khaki for lowlighting (near the folds for some shadow effect really), and highlighting will be skeleton/white 50:50 mix. Lenses were done with boltgun metal, followed by Macharite red, Tamiya clear red and then Humbrol Clear Red on top. The metallics are a little dark right now, because they got a wash of Black Ink. I haven't painted a mini in over 2 years (and that one was a 1 hour challenge), so this is all a bit like a refresher course, but I'm enjoying it so far. I probably won't be able to vow a second time for this ETL, but hopefully all my models will be ready and vowable for next years! That's it for today- but I would love some C&C guys! Let me in on any tips you guys have, I want to improve! Argent aquila
i know how you feel about the finecast stuff. i just did a kitbash/ conversion of a chaplain into a captain on a gore wyverns squad that will be adjoining my scythes, the chaplains' head was so disfigured that it looked more like an eldar wraithguard head... serves me right for ordering one direct from GW instead of waiting for 3 months on a restocking. with the face, it was easier for me to just take a tactical marine, cut off the face grill, and attach the lower half of a dark eldar helmet, fill out the gap with apoxie sculpt, and smooth.... it gives a very unique look that i think is very cool. (although it would take some work if you were to keep that helmet.. if you wanna see it, I'll be updating my scythe stuff here in a minute. dunno, just putting it out there!!!) loving your cypher, i personally use the GW tried and true leadbelcher, nuln oil, then runefang or ironbreaker, it's just easier and still looks fine. EDIT: no librarians. That is definitely a unique approach, I'd be interested in seeing that, yeah. I think a headswap may be the route I'll end up going on the model with the broken face grille- just a matter of finding one that suits. loving the librarian, i personally use the GW tried and true leadbelcher, nuln oil, then runefang or ironbreaker, it's just easier and still looks fine. Thanks, though he is now a "Cypher" (so I can get a proper vow in for the BT subforum. No psykers allowed!) I'll have to give that paint recipe a try-- I was bummed to find that about 60% of my paints have dried out; and I won't be able to get replacements anytime soon. Hopefully my friend will let me use some of his paint next time I see him for our tri-weekly hobby days. The_Chaplain
So, I'm under doctor's orders to rest up as much as humanly possible after being diagnosed officially with upper respiratory bronchitis and tonsillitis. What better way to rest up than to work on some warhammer models? Well, what about working on models with new parts/models that your fiance got for you after ferreting one of your conversion idea notebooks? The Emperor's Champion rocking a new set of kneepad armor and a fetching finecast backpack. Backpack is from Helbrecht and kneepads are from the Master of the Armory model. The *now legless* master of the armory. He will be getting HH mk 3 armour leg replacements, and will likely become a southpaw heavy weapon Devastator. The rest of the Masters will be divvied up between Sternguard, Devastators and bits fodder for future projects. The goal for Helbrecht will for him to become a member of a Sternguard squad-- after he gets his BT iconography removed and I fix his horrendous walking/wobble pose. Seriously, how the hell are you supposed to work with that model without it toppling over? I'm going to add some bionics to Helbrecht's head rather than a headswap. There is a picture from one of the Fantasy Flight Games RPG books of a marine with a bionic eye that has a connecting metal nose bridge that I want to replicate using the maltese cross bridge on Helbrecht's head. Here is the picture I'm talking about, unfortunately I don't have a bigger, full size picture. This model came out of left field-- A Castellan Crowe that she picked up while she was buying her brother a welcome home present so we could rack up some more points on our local game store customer rewards program card. I think he's got some serious potential as a future Sternguard (I already have a plan to transfer leg ornamentation from a LotD model I have onto the left greave). This breacher sergeant got a spiffy pair of bionic legs from the Iron Hands upgrade set, which I gave the stud treatment considering he was in Mk 5 armor. Here is a pic of the other greave. And a fun little addon I put onto the back of that greave (not gonna lie, partly because I didn't want to do anymore :cuss studs at that point) Taken from one of the Chaos Warpsmith tentacles (the one with the dragon head to be exact); I got the idea to add a sort of stabilizing spike like the Stalker/Hunter has-- like the sergeant could jab the stabilizer in and brace himself for a heavier hit on the shield. That's going to wrap it up for today folks, thanks for looking. C&C welcomed and appreciated as always! geektom
Wow, everything is looking so good! Your conversions are so consistent and your eye for detail is just great. I love that you are not afraid to add in those little bb's to shoulder and leg plates, and that you will even swap just the knee pads to make a model look better- top notch! I really like the Cypher, too. Believe it or not, I haven't even seen the new rule books yet, but I understand the Psychic phase is a much bigger part- you are ready to blast some enemies of the Emperor! The_Chaplain
Deathspectersgt7: Thanks. Brother Tyrax: Haha, thanks a lot brother, that made me chuckle. To be honest, I have contemplated doing a stud design on his breacher shield as well. Thoughts? Madwolf Shadowmane: Yeah, I'm still figuring out exactly what I'm going to do with those masters-- but I'll be sure to get pictures up as I work with them. The power axe master may wind up as a sternguard/devastator sergeant just because I don't want to reculpt that gorgeous cloak sculpt. Last I checked power axes were a bit underwhelming and overcosted though. If I can find a suitable mace head it'll probably become a power maul. Geektom: Thank you very much Geektom, that comment really brought a smile to my face. I won't be keeping the Cypher actually- my plan is to send it to a friend for his personal miniatures collection; and I want to convert a mini in his honour for my army as well. Slipstreams: Thank you very much. I am feeling a lot better with the antibiotics, but yeah, illness is never a picnic. Thanks for looking through my thread! Well, I haven't been at my hobby table this weekend- I've been a bit preoccupied with my *future* brother in law returning home from college out in California. He's only here for a week, so we have to make the most of his short vacation. That said, I did receive a package from a friend I've made here on the B&C yesterday-- all the way from jolly old England! Wowza! What was in the package? 6 of these bad boys! Headlight farings from the out of production chaplain on bike! I'm going to see about getting some resin and casting these (just because I feel resin is easier to work with and paint than metal); but he was nice enough to send 6 for the chaplain and his reclusiam command squad! If I can get the resin to work, I think I might replace the old rounded edge feather farings with sharper more detailed ones from the DV box/ ravenwing command squad box. And in an ideal world, I could even cast some for things like sergeants and even trooper bikers for some quick objective contesting/controlling. I think the wings from the dark angel box would look distinct enough for the job. Okay, I'm getting ahead of myself with all these hypotheticals- here is what the metal farings look like on the chaplain and a member of the reclusiam squad. That's it for today folks, more pictures up hopefully by next weekend. Thanks for looking! C&C (as always) welcomed and appreciated! Squeaky
*not enough likes! curse you people for doing fantastic work* That chaplain on a bike is still my favourite model of your army and probably the best chaplain I've ever seen! The Storm Talon missiles do look alot more practical and a bit more intimidating than 4 over sized air torpedo's xD. Great stuff as always Chaplain! Monstra Sumus
Hmm, do you want him to be covered in studs, as there is room for a loooot of them on that shield? The_Chaplain
Squaky: Wow, that's a hell of a compliment, thank you! Brother Tyrax: That's true, that would be a lot of studs.
