Khorne's Eternal Hunt - KrautScientist's chaotic WIP thread 2024: Suddenly, Death Guard...

Yep, liking the knight, and Bio's right about adding some extra detail to the base......

Wait.

That's the wrong way round, you lecture me on bases. :D  I'm fast on your heels with my pair, and I might even have some small stones. Sand for texture even.

Contain yourself now !

Yeah, looks like it is pretty much time for weathering now.

Looking good!!!

He says easy and describes it as such, but that is precisely the look I have been trying to achieve with my NL for quite some time now with varying results. I think his minimalist style takes quite a bit of know how to actually pull off and make it look so good. The mark of a true artist that.

Edit: whoops, meant to quote the comment above about the skin tones.

I love the minimalist base, and the iconoclastic atmosphere it conveys. Great job. I'd agree that maybe with some weathering and/or extra details like moss or some small tufts of dry static grass, you could draw a little more attention to the details on the base. But do. Ot overdo it. Better stay on the sober side of things.

Sorry to read about your troubles. I left a comment on your blog because I see your comment here about it is more about the Knight. Good luck, buddy!!

Oh, I totally know what you mean. Minimalistic does not mean easy.

If we could apply lovely to such a beast of a thing I would say it is lovely. But this is a Khorne Knight Titan, brutal is a better word. :)

Regarding the base I would go with adding some rusted barbed wire fencing, mostly smushed into the ground. Just enough to break things up.

Otherwise I'd dirty up the banner between his legs as it seems to drag along the ground as is.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! I definitely get what you're saying about the base: I am torn between feeling exactly the same way myself and being afraid of messing up the base (and especially the stone texture on the statue parts) with too much colour. That said, I'll definitely be taking another look at that element before the Knight is finished -- scout's honour! ;)

In the meantime, here's another small update: I finished the banner dangling between the Knight’s legs, using some decals to create a suitable design. The front received a World Eaters legion badge in red:

As simple as this design looks, it was a veritable nightmare to get right! I started with a decal from the FW World Eaters decal sheet, but it needed lots of decal softener and several coats of varnish to finally conform to the banner’s surface. And even then, what had been a rich, ox-blood red on the decal sheet turned into a prety off-putting shade of pink against the dark background, so I ended up painting over the decal several times, coloring in the legion badge, so to speak, with my brush.

Fortunately enough, the rear was far less of a hassle — in fact, designing some of the battle honours won by the Knight during its long years of service was actually quite a bit of fun! Take a look:

The bottom of the banner will be slightly drybrushed (along with the Knight's toes), in order to make it look like dust from the battlefield has settled on those areas. It'll be a difficult balance to get right, but that's just one more tiny detail that I'll need to keep track of ;)

So, here’s the Knight as it stands right now:

Regarding the dust: Have you ever tried mixing Typhus Corrosion with Grey and applying it in thin layers? I do so for the muddy dust for my brown bases and I am very pleased with the result. Perhaps give it a try?

I was going to suggest dusting up the bottom of the banner, but you're on it.

Ooooh, that's a great idea! I might try that sometime. I love the texture of Typhus.

WE symbol on the Banner is really effective mate. Love the battle honours on the rearas well.

I'm not suggesting loads of colour on the base but as it is it's quite bland IMHO. If you don't mind me posting some examples of bases I have done to show even a light dry brush of rakarth flesh over grey helps to break up the area for a slightly more natural look. I usually add patches of different washes in as random a pattern as I can.

For a model you've poured so much blood and sweat into I'd hate to see you leave the base through fear of messing it up. I understand you don't want it to draw too much attention away from the model but I think it could really help complete this great looking Knight.

Ps if you do have an issue with me posting these just let me know and I'll remove them buddy. Just trying to give some inspiration. :tu:

I uploaded pictures of my first finished Marine into my gallery:

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I really appreciate it! :)

Regarding the base, I've been adding a mix of different washes to some of the deepest recesses (mostly Typhus Corrosion and some very thinned down Vermin Brown), which has already provided some variety to the somewhat monochromatic colour scheme. Frustratingly enough, it doesn't really photograph all that well, though, so I guess I'll have to wait until the light is exactly right ;)

In the meantime, here's a little something for those of you who might have been wondering about that missing heraldic shield...

As for building and painting another Knight...yeah, fat chance ;) I could maybe, MAYBE see myself tackling a stock or kitbashed Kytan at some point, but don't hold your breath. Cherish this model, it's all the Knight you'll be getting from me for now ;)

As always, let me know what you think!

The banner is great, live the honours on the back. The heraldic shield looks nice, I'm glad you didn't go with green on the planet. From the last pic the base looks a lot better, it doesn't draw the eye but it's not one big area of grey, and looks natural.

He looks fab, Kraut! You should be proud. Those washes do indeed come through in the pic, and I think you nailed that. The shield really finishes him off, btw. So... Is this it? Iz it finishes? Has BnC dangled another beautifull piece in my face, while I'm sitting here, Knightless?
