Khorne's Eternal Hunt - KrautScientist's chaotic WIP thread 2024: Suddenly, Death Guard...

Recommended Posts

Now there's a detail that I would really like to hear your thoughts on: My original plan was to use the full set of armour plates that come with the kit, i.e. a breastplate, the two upper-thigh plates, a set of vambraces, a skull-shaped shoulder pad and the two smaller tilting plates that attach to either side of the breastplate. But now that I have added the breastplate and thigh-armour, I find myself reluctant to cover up more of the red skin: I really like the look of the bare shoulders and the part where you can just glimpse the musculature of the daemon beneath the breastplate, and I am beginning to feel like adding more of the armour would actually diminish the coolness of the model -- I'd love to hear your thoughts on this matter!

Its looking Great Kraut.

I think a Shoulder un-covered may look cool, not sure about leaving both bare. But I think you are right, adding lots of Armour would cover the great paint job.

Cheers, guys!

@ Uveron: There's only one shoulder pad anyway, though, so the question is either to have one armoured shoulder or none at all. And the armoured shoulder would have to be the right one, as the shoulder pad sits rather awkwardly on the left shoulder, due to the proximity of the wings.

@ Augs: Thanks, buddy! Any ideas about the matter at hand, though? I'd love to hear your take!

Thanks for the feedback, guys! :)

After much deliberation, I have decided against the shoulder pad: I mocked it up in place, and it ended up covering too much of the skin, just as I had suspected it might. This is basically a first for me, as I am a huge fan of extra detail and additional armour, but just this once, less indeed seems to be more. I might still add the vambraces at a later point, but for now I think we can call the model itself finished:

Let me just say that painting that whip was yet another exercise in patience, pretty much on par with the wings ;)

So with the model now finished, that just leaves the base to be constructed and painted - a project that should keep me occupied until the weekend ;) With a bit of luck, I'll be able to post the finished piece before the cutoff on Saturday.

Until then, as always, let me know what you think! :)

Bloodthirsters looking great buddy. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the base. I have the same dilemma re the armour plates. I'm still unsure if I'll add any to Skarbrand. I haven't painted the whip yet but after painting the tattered wings I'm not particularly looking forward to it.

Thanks a lot, guys! :smile.:

@ Biohazard: There's actually only one really bad part about the whip, buddy: the spikes. I'll say this: Sit down, relax, and then do them in one go, painting all of the spikes on one segment of the whip, then go on to the next segment, etc. Once the spikes are done, the rest is a breeze by comparison!

So I said the base would be taking me until the weekend, right? But I couldn't leave he model alone, and so, after a frantic building session that lasted until late at night, here's the final update regarding the Bloodthirster. I give you...

Ghor'Lash'Kharganath, the Gorelord, the Ever-Wrathful, Chosen Hunter of Khorne

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/7/812025-Bloodthirster%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Daemonkin%2C%20Daemons%2C%20Ghor%27lash%27kharganath%2C%20Greater%20Daemon.jpg

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/7/812027-Bloodthirster%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Daemonkin%2C%20Daemons%2C%20Ghor%27lash%27kharganath%2C%20Greater%20Daemon.JPG

And here's a closer look at the finished base:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/7/812028-Bloodthirster%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Daemonkin%2C%20Daemons%2C%20Ghor%27lash%27kharganath%2C%20Greater%20Daemon.JPG

There were several elements I absolutely wanted to incorporate. First and foremost, a symbol of the Imperium's shattered power. I think the shield fills that role rather nicely

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/7/812032-Bloodthirster%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Daemonkin%2C%20Daemons%2C%20Ghor%27lash%27kharganath%2C%20Greater%20Daemon.JPG

In a bit of an in-joke, the bease also features another helmet from the Golden Legion, my DIY Astartes Chapter created for INQ28:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/7/7/812029-Bloodthirster%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Daemonkin%2C%20Daemons%2C%20Ghor%27lash%27kharganath%2C%20Greater%20Daemon.JPG

And finally, I really liked the idea of the earth itself reacting to the daemon's malign presence where his ironshod hooves touched the ground -- hence the bloody bone spikes jutting from the rock. And in the middle of it all, the Bloodthirster is ascending from a pit of boiling blood on a pillar of fire:

And finally, another closeup of the axe:

I am not going to mince words here: I am incredibly happy with the finished model! From a purely technical standpoint, this is very probably my finest paintjob to date. Oh yeah, and this also means another thing:

3rd ETL Vow finished!

As always, let me know what you think! :smile.:

That is an awesome, awesome model, and a fine centrepiece for any Khorne army.

I'd love to see you do the other two Bloodthirster variants too, especially if you went with a different colour scheme for each 'Thirster, perhaps giving the big ol' axe-o-doom (can't remember the name, Insensate Rage was it?) variant coal-black skin with glowing recesses, as if he were composed of molten rock held together by stony skin and pure anger, with the IMO hugely under-appreciated hammer-flail version (Wrath of Khorne?) a glossy, skinless look?

In any case, I love that Bloodthirster and I eagerly await your next project.

Absolutely fantastic work all around on the Bloodthirster, my friend. The base is a finishing touch which rounds up an already stunning model.

My only nitpick is his name: Why does it have six instead of eight syllables? ;)

Thank you kindly, everyone! This has been quite a project for me, and I am happy to hear that you like the big guy as well ;)

@ Squigsquasher: To be perfectly honest, I think I've done all I wanted to do with the kit, at least where standard Bloodthirsters are concerned: The other two variants both feature parts that I am not a big fan of (I hate that meteor hammer, for instance), and I've also spent ages going back and forth over whether to paint the skin on my 'Thirster black or red, finally coming to the conclusion that red was preferrable because black skin is so extremely hard to pull off well. So don't expect two more Bloodthirsters from me -- sorry ;)

That being said, I do have another Bloodthirster in a box that was given to me as a gift, and like Biohazard, I'll be using him to convert a version of Daemon Primarch Angron, so you can at least look forward to that! ;)

@ Teetengee: I think I've already explained my reasoning behind dropping the shoulder pad, and I still stand by that decision. Regarding the question of how his breastplate is fastened, I imagine it's hooked directly into his flesh or something -- after all, those leather straps on his legs don't run all the way around, but are hooked into the very meat of his legs on both sides, so yeah...

@ deathspectersgt7: Haha, cheers, mate! I have yet to download my own copy to take a look, but I am glad you seem to like the feature! ;)

@ Augs: Cheers, buddy! :) Regarding the name, huh, I didn't even know that requirement -- after all, Skarbrand and Ang'grath also have shorter names like that. I'll tell you that it was complicated enough to come up with a cool and fitting name without having to count the syllables, thank you very much! ;)

Awesome model. Awesome work.

Any chance of a group shot to see the difference in scale and better feel the immense awesomeness of your Thirster?

Again, thanks, guys! :)

@ DarkVen: That's a really cool idea! So I snapped a quick picture of everything I have painted for this ETL:

etl-class-of-2016-2.jpg

For the sake of completeness, I have also included the two "bonus models" I painted beyond my vows while I had to wait for the opportunity to pick up some new Chaos Black spray: one rank and file World Eater and an icon bearer for my Traitor Guard. All of these provide a nice enough collections of shapes and sizes, that should give you a good idea of the various models' scale.

Works for me!

Also, the daemon prince that I thought looked a bit wonky looks just fine when in the context of other models, so that is a huge plus as far as I am concerned!

Vows look great all together mate. I'll keep that in mind for the spikes. Although I used my Thirster as an Hq today for the first time in a tournament and he was just a bit meh. So I'll maybe leave painting the spikes until Im less ashamed of him and can stand to look at him again :D Edited by Biohazard

I think this model really shows how much progress you've been making as a painter. Frankly, it looks stunning and compared to even a year ago it's so much better. You've always been a good painter, and very prolific, but now you're just kicking it up a notch.

Also, that little spike summoning circle is a freaking brilliant idea and very original.

Aha! Well, you failed to take into account that Ang'grath is just a shortening of his full name.

Ang'grath's compete name is Ang'grath Angree McSlashyface.

The same holds with Skarbrand. Skarbrand's just a nickname from when that particular daemon was a still a wee little Haemonculous (pre-bloodletter) who got poked with a hot pincer by his mates as a tease. It left an ugly scar on his left buttock, which branded him as the runt of the pack, earning him the nickname 'Skarbrand'. He was bullied and teased even more after that, which angered him so much he killed all his friends and went on a murderous rampage that eventually saw him rise to power and become the Greater Daemon he is today. His real name is Milton Ashley von Stabbyworth.

True story.
