So i've been thinking of how to run my Night Lords again. I'm revamping this to have more power armour and no cultists. It's been too much of a crutch for me and it didn't make me thaat happy to run.

Here is the list:
Battalion Detachment:
Host Raptorial Detachment

Chaos Lord - Jump Pack, Claws of the Black Hunt

Sorceror - Jump Pack, Force Sword, Bolt Pistol

CSM - 10 man - Combi-Melta, PFist, 2 Meltaguns

CSM - 5 man - Lascannon

CSM - 5 man - Lascannon

Raptors - 5 man - PFist, Combi-Plasma, 2 Plasmaguns

Warp Talons - 10 man - Mark of Khorne

Havocs - 5 man - Flamer, 4 Lascannons

Obliterators - 3 man - Mark of Slaanesh

Obliterators - 3 man - Mark of Slaanesh

Chaos Rhino - 2 Combi-Bolters, Havoc Launcher

Chaos Rhino - 2 Combi-Bolters, Havoc Launcher

Chaos Rhino - 2 Combi-Bolters, Havoc Launcher

Total: 1750

I know oblits are currently uncertain in terms of their pricing, so i'm still going by the latest codex which puts them at the lower price.

The 10 man CSM and the Havocs will be in the Rhino. The oblits, and the jump pack guys will start in reserve.

What do you guys think?

Like many of you I used the 2012 release Chosen with a mace. I gave him a shield for his 4++ and added a book and called it a day.

NightGaunt gets borrowed by the World Eaters. He's flexible.

He'll use WarpRend, one of my Renegades and Heretics psykers, as one of his 2 dark disciple people. I haven't decided who to use as the other disciple.

WarpRend is the one on the left.

Like many of you, I'm sad that the Dark Apostle's buffs now happen at the beginning of the turn. NightGaunt can no longer escort my Rhino-mounted Bezerkers. He'll have to go back to hoofing it. However, I'm looking forward to trying out his various new buffs.

Thanks Tallarn! Your post gave me a lot of inspiration. I took a chosen champion that I had kitbashed before from a primaris and added some extra bits. I took the book from the terminator lord sprue, the icon from the new CSM box and a couple of ornate heads from the vehicle sprue to replace the vents on the backpack. I think the result is okay!

In regards to tabletop tactics, what's the best way to set an ambush for opponents' units?

The closest you will get to an ambush is having a bunch of Raptors, Chaos Lord and Terminators hanging back up in orbit ready to come down when / where you feel like it. but your opponent will always be aware that they are there, they just don't know where or when you will bring them in. I tend to wait until about turn 3 these days when I need that decisive push to get something done.

Also I just finished my other Dark Vengeance bolter marine! Not sure if this one has a touch of Nurgle or something with his armour.

Is there any point in using Terminators?

Why not? If you like the models and fit the theme of your army go for it. Don't always need to play to win.

I'm for a squad as they will be the bodyguards for be'lakor.

I know people are finding success with them in black legion lists because of abbadon but I'm sure they can be made to work for other legions and other lists.

I think I'd go with Combi-bolter and Chain axe to keep them cheap while still having some punch. Terminators with fancy melee weapons just have a big target above their heads and are too expensive to get wiped out before doing anything. Maybe give them combi-plasma instead of combi-bolters if you want them to punch a little bit harder, though that would make them into a mainly shooty unit since you usually don't want to trade the plasma shots for the chain axe attacks.

Also you can give them chain glaives bitz instead of chain axe bitz and most people wouldn't complain. ;)

I use them with 3 combi bolters and power fists, reaper autocannon and chainfist, champion with combi plasma and power sword. I see no reason to keep such premier unit with such basic low damage melee. Terminators are not only a target for shooting opponents but also melee ones, having power fists deters that. If I need to deep strike them to charge something and wreck a vehicle or monster I can do that. Otherwise I can deep strike in cover for a 1+ save and have great firepower still with beta bolters. Especially for holding objectives. If anyone wants to charge them off an objective they need to go through power fists and a chainfist. With Night Lords in particular they work in tandem with my Raptors and Chaos Lord, they work great when your opponent also has 2 suads of Raptors, chaos Lord and other threats like a defiler and helbrutes coming down on them. My termies are 197pts and found them to be totally worth it. Also tartaros armour looks awesome :D

Im planning to use a forgefiend on a leash with a custom built warpsmith walking him as a lord Discordant, that makes the size look right.

Although I like the idea of a fiend with a leash around it, that would be massively larger than a LD. You would be much closer if you went with a juggernaut, clipped the tail off and put an engine or a bunch of tendrils in its butt.

Yeah, you're right, I looked at the community site picture on my phone at first, and then now on my desktop and the forgefiend is massive in comparison. I think two juggernauts on chains with like...wires and stuff hanging off them.

I've played around with it a couple of games and it's definitely got a place in a Night Lords list. I find that running a Jump Lord with Claws of the Black Hunt and the Tip of the Claw warlord trait flanked by 2 Warp Talon squads can do some work. The Vicious Descent strategem is in my experience the most useful on a shooty raptor squad with either plasma or melta. This allows you to deepstrike them outside of the Chaos Lord's re-roll aura and still reliably hit high-value targets.

Overall I'm pretty content with it, but even though GW seems to want leadership debuffs and melee raptors work, the detachment fails to make this any more viable than it was before.
