I suppose I have done some, but they were Traitor Mechanicum from the very opening of the Heresy, wheras these guys will be properly corrupt Magi from later in the conflict. They won't be part of the same diorama as the Martian pilgrims, but they should serve as an interesting contrast; whereas the pilgrims are relatively conventional cyborgs and servitors with an element of body horror, the Hereteks I have in mind are far more disgusting and bizarre, with little left of their former humanity. I'm thinking Giger meets Lovecraft, but we shall see!

So I made some test models for my Dark Mechanicum. I figured that some corrupted servo-skulls would be a good start in terms of getting a design ethic and colour-scheme right, so that's how I started. I wanted to avoid a 'Mechanicum with spikes' look, or anything with too many leering baroque daemonic faces and the like; while that's fine as far as it goes, I preferred the idea of something a bit more wierd, biomechanical and inscrutable. Even loyalist Magi have a habit of disappearing down the sanity rabbit hole during their reseearch; I figured that many hereteks would be so specialised (or mad) that their appearance would be utterly bizarre, and rarely humanoid.

Here's what I came up with anyhow- three corruped servo skulls in the service of a Heretek. I'm quite pleased at their look, parrticularly the bruised and unhealthy skin that holds everything together. Now they just need some owners!

Glad people like these; the Hereteks themselves will follow a similar rather unpleasant pattern. I'll hopefully have another three servo-gonads (as I think of them) done fairly soon; then hopefully my Forgeworld order will arrive and I can get going on the principals.

I'm making some progress on the pilgrims too, by the way, so there should be something to show there too in the near future!

Hi all,

Sorry for the lack of posting; I’ve been on holiday. I have some progress to show today though; the first of my Dark Mechanicum Adepts is gradually taking form…

Having been rather pleased with my teste® models (sorry) I made a Forgeworld order to get something that would serve as the basis of their masters. While I waited, I made another three servo-gonads; here’s a photo.

Anyhow, just before I went away, the order came in- I got some of the brilliantly creepy Forgeworld Mieotic Spore Sacks, which had exactly the floaty, fleshy, non-anthropomorphic look I wanted my Dark Mechanicum to have. Here's the three of them on my cutting mat...

The idea is that this group will be the temple-maids of one of the Martian Oracles, but hopelessly corrupted by the Ruinious Powers. As I have three of them, this lets me bring in a variety of influences related to the number three; most obviously the mythological concept of the Trimorphe, which influences everything from the three witches in Macbeth to the Greek Fates, Norse Norns and Dickens’ ghosts in A Christmas Carol.

I wanted each member of the group to be distinct and interesting, so the idea is that each one represents something different; in line with the Fates, there will be a Spinner, who creates the thread of fate and is concerned with the past, an Apportioner, who measures the thread and is concerned with the present, and a Cutter, who cuts the thread and is concerned with the future. This lets me keep a common theme but with different aspects, so for example the Apportioner will have a lot of sensory equipment and still carry the divination wand from before their corruption, while the Cutter will have lots of blades.

I’ve never really done full-scale Chaotic corruption before, and personally I don’t really think adding some spikes to a normal model cuts it; I want these guys to be complete abominations, with the only lingering bits of their humanity adding to the horror rather than showing any emotion- so screaming tormented faces are out, but disturbing biomechanical appendages ending in perfectly-formed human hands are definitely in. Obviously Doom 3 is a big insipration; that caught the pale, biomechanical look I wanted for them perfectly. I love the idea of them floating across the landscape in complete silence, occasionally descending on the terrified mortals below to do something unspeakable for completely incomprehensible reasons....

So anyhow, here's a WIP of the Cutter, who as you can see is quite well equipped for her task! I'm quite pleased with the overalll look; there's still a lot of work to be done, especially in terms of greenstuffing everything to look a bit more cohesive and emerging from folds of bloated skin, but I think it has the bizarre and utterly inhuman look I was going for. When painted up in the same fleshy tones as the servo-gonads it should be rather disgusting.

Thanks, I'm having fun with these. So here's the Cutter more or less ready for painting; I still need to finish affixing the etched brass properly but hopefully you get the idea.

And here's her sister, the Apportioner, with alll sorts of sensory equipment. The etched brass (which is also not properly applied yet here) is meant to be a clue as to their sphere of interest; the Mechanicus cog represents a rising sun, so the Cutter, who is concerned with the future, has more of it visible than her other two sisters.

I'm really looking forward to painting these.

...and here's the last of the three sisters, the Spinner. She's a slightly more involved conversion compared to the others as her head is entirely converted; I took the chain hand from the Talos and made it into a mouth, sticking a couple of Tyranid adrenal glands on top to start off the skin covering of the head and then filling in the gaps with greenstuff. I wanted to keep the triclops look of the other two sisters, so for the smaller eyes I found a couple of gems (I think they were from a High Elf bit) that were about the right size, and then for the big central eye I just did a pressmould. I'm pleased with the result; when painted up it should have a clear kinship to the other two heads, while remaining distinct.  It's difficult to tell given the other arms and so on, but she has a series of smaller hooked chains dangling down from her body, one of which with an impaled torso on it.

Now they're done, the next job is to put on some paint! Watch this space...
