Great work as always though a shame about the tournament, however I've got some names and a little fluff for you inspired by one of my own non 40k projects.

Veteran Seargent Beranhurd Burg-Gumarik and Weapon specialist Laslou Morsenk (Centurians)

Born to the Esenlik Tribe they were both selected by the chaplaincy during a long and bitter war with a rival tribe.

Beranhurd is a proven tactical leader and is being watched for further promotion where as it is often joked that Laslou would make fine crimson fist due to a stoic refusal to accept defeat especially when under siege.

A third name that relates to my friends contribution to the hobby is Erkane Romalik as a rival for Beranhurd.

Selected alongside the two Esanlish Arkin hails from the rival tribe as an honourable soul amongst the barbaric savages and killers that made up his tribe.

Possibly even Beranhurd’s superior when it comes to tactical acumen the rivalry between the two drives both to greater heights and has garnered a mutual respect between the two former enemies.

Thanks, guys!

Here's the first five devastator WIP pictures. Incidentaly, the vexilarius and the grav cannon specialists of this squad still need a name...

Veteran Tech-sergeant - Sigfrid Erlach - TheReaper17

This guys will get the auspex of borther Brontis, below. Also, I'm pretty sure I'm going to make a custom Signum for him.

Battle Brother -Alfric Brontis - vharing

THis guy will get sergeant Erlach's left arm, with the knife.

Hope you like! Oh - I might change the left pauldron of the vexilla to a MkIII pauldron, and one of the devastators' heads for a FW Iron Hands augment MkIII helmet.

Comments, feedback, and especially name suggestions are most welcome.

@ KrautScientist: thanks, buddy! Glad you like the kitbashed standard - I must admit it was a lucky coincidence that the two bits fit together so well (or was it, GW?) , and I'd be honoured if you steal the idea for your 30K World Eater force. Yeah, you read that right, force. There's no brakes on the Heresy train. Choo choo.

@ Viarocanum: Cheers, mate. I'm happy you like them and recognize the movement. It's the thing I was quite invested in to get right

@ Mechanist: You cheecky bastard, claiming and naming an entire Centurion squad for yourself. :p I´m kidding, of course. Thanks buddy! I really like the idea behind the atmosphere in the squad - one of former rivalry, turned into brotherhood through mutual experience. Kind of like the reverse of what First Claw went through, don´t you think?  they're definitely in!  - on one condition - that you name one of the above guys too :biggrin.:

Edited by Augustus b'Raass

Ha, that is so stupid of you painting them up so very well. Now you will be said when you have to remove any models.

See if you painted like us regular painters you wouldn't feel too bad.

(please see this as a joke everyone)

Well I'm glad you like the names and happy to supply one more inspired by my little project and Germanised a little.

Vexillarius Jehan Shtapol

and because I came up with it and based on the project Franko Hirschkuh a Communications expert born under a fortuitous comet with a great respect for the many cultures of Man.

The Devastators are looking great as well. That sergeant is such a wonderful conversion, buddy!

Seeing how you are planning a custom signum anyeay, might I suggest a cable running from his (eventual) auspex to his backpack or something similar? I think it would underline the fact that his auspex feeds into the rest of his equipment in a more direct way, as would befit his already much more hi-tech look.

(...)and because I came up with it and based on the project Franko Hirschkuh a Communications expert born under a fortuitous comet with a great respect for the many cultures of Man.

There I was, just about ready to chew you out for that frankly ridiculous (at least to a German) sounding last name, but then I googled it, just to be on the safe side, and now I feel humbled because I learned something and can actually appreciate the punchline. Well played, man, well played! ;)

Now I'm intrigued to know if it's the actual reference or something different yet equally relevant.

I'll put my reply in spoilers, so as not to derail the thread and in order to to enable others to discover it for themselves -- if there's anything to discover in the first place, that is

Google pointed to German Wikipedia article on francocantabrian cave art here. With some of the depictions of animals found among those murals being of female deer -- "Hirschkuh" in German. Now please tell me it wasn't just one huge coincidence...
Edited by KrautScientist

I'll likewise add spoilers.

The Cave art wasn't something I'd found but the surname of Doe translated (roughly I might add) across to the German Hirschkuh is correct. so Franco/Franko is purely coincidental though may give some more to play with for fluff which I like. Though anyone following my Demon Knight will know I get get carried away with fluff and can write a novel's worth so I really trying to just give ideas and quick hints.

Edit from quote to spoilers.

Haha, thanks for the many comments, everyone.

I've finished the first five of the last Grav-Devastator squad:

XII Devastator Squad

XII Devastator Squad is, together with XI Squad, the first to employ the recently developed portable Graviton Cannons. The new technology is a further development of the Graviton weaponry that was used during the Horus Heresy, made in the two millennia following the Horus Heresy by Techpriests of the Forgeworld Tigrus. With its strength in damaging heavier equipment, the Techmarines of the Imperial Fists have had an interest in the technology´s development since its inception, and have employed it during the recent quelling of the Risa Uprising, where the Imperial Fists eliminated the heretical pleasure cults led by the Risa Hedony. The weaponry is deployed by experimental squads, with a slight but authorized deviation from the Codex Astartes, in that they are led by Techmarines learned in Graviton technology. Recent tactics show good results in combat effectiveness through deployment in Drop Pods, in conjunction with Assault Squads.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/WP_20170311_002_zpshng4znf6.jpg

Veteran sergeant - Sigfrid Erlach - TheReaper17

Like Jahan Hotar, the Tech-Sergeant of XI Squad, Tech-Sergant Erlach has accepted command of a squad dedicated to the implementation and testing of the recently rediscovered graviton weaponry. He does so grudgingly, for with his status as a commanding officer comms the Fifth COmpany tradition of wearing a crest atop his helmet. Erlach is a staunch man of simple heritage, but has shown that he is as apt at persuading the machine spirits of the weaponry he is testing, as he is at leading the men under his command. It is for this reason he chose to paint the true Imperial Fists symbol on his left pauldron, instead of the hybrid with a mechanicum cog, like Tech-Sergeant Hotar has.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/WP_20170311_003_zpshpabyzrw.jpg

Vexillarius -  Jann Shtapol - Mechanist

Brother Shtapol gained the honour of carrying XII Devastator Squad's primary banner into battle, displaying its squad designation and the company colours. Being an expert shot, Shtapol functions as the combat squad´s long range sniper, being able to take out potential threats while the heavier weaponry is being set up.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/WP_20170311_006_zps5yvpr07m.jpg

Heavy Weapon Specialist (Grav Cannon) - Franko Hirschkuh - Mechanist with fluff

Born under a fortuitous comet, brother Hirschkuh grew up the son of a communications expert whose talents were in great demand among Imperial Traders. He visited a great many planets during his formative years, and developed a great respect for the many cultures of Man he encountered, as well as a thourough hatred for the Xenos that threaten them. It was the zeal with which he spoke a bout the need to defend Mankind that led him to be noiced by the Recruiting Reclusiarch Chaplain, and eventually to his induction into the Imperial Fists.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/WP_20170311_009_zpsnkpa9rrc.jpg

Heavy Weapon Specialist (Grav Cannon) - Karut Humboldt KrautScientist

Brother Karut is a talented man with a critical tongue and a sharp  mind, with a penchant of espousing the benefits of High Gothic over Low Gothic in everyday speech. He originally was a zealous assault marine, who excelled at bloodily dispatching of his enemies in gory hand to hand combat. He has recently been re-assigned combat duty as a Heavy Weapons Specialist in XII Devastator Squad to teach him the virtue of humility. ( :tongue.: )

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/WP_20170311_015_zpshnrgajnk.jpg

Battle Brother -Alfric Brontis - vharing

Brother Brontis is a brutal man of simple origins. The only reason he in particular was assigned to XII Squad was for his abilities in melee combat and active service as a bodyguard on diplomatic missions, in the hopes of him taking on a protective role against enemies that close in on XII Squad's firing position.

Hope you like them! Oh and special thanks to Mechanist and KrautScientist for naming these dudes in the last second!

C&C More than welcome!

Replies!

@ rednekkboss: Oh, don't be sorry - they are loyalist scum for sure! Thanks.

@ Thousand Eyes: I know right? I am stupid. Why would I put all that effort in painting little plastic men in the first place. Sadness is an apt punishment for doing that. Stupid hobby

@ vharing: Ha! QWell, I hope you like him even more now that he has a knife, instead of a useless-in-close-combat auspex!

@ malcharion: He's done! I hope he matches your expectations

@ TheReaper17: haha cheers, buddy!

@ marcusc: Thanks! I love that you said that. All my assault marines have black armour - I just did it to make them stand out a bit more - especially because their bikes and jump packs are also yellow, and I didn't want it to be one big banana bomb, so to speak.

@ Mechanist: Hurray! More names. I like the little fluff you wrote for that Franko Hirschkuh guy - and ha a good laugh over your convo with KrautSCientist. Unfortunately the comms specialist in XII squad was already taken, so now your guy is a Grav dude with a background in comms. :smile.:

@ KrautScienist: Your convo with Mechanist was very enjoyable! Also, because you learned something and were humbled, I hereby declare that you named the remaining grav devastator Humbol Karut! :biggrin.::tongue.: ANyway, I really liked your idea about the auspex-linked to the signum, but I was already half-way through painting this squad when you posted that. I will use the idea in two upcoming Heavy olter Squads, though

Hrm, I don't know whether to feel honoured to be offended, to best honest. A little bit from column A, a little bit from column B, I suppose

At first I was a bit miffed that it had to be a grav cannon Devastator, because I just hate the look of those weapons, but the Mk. III helmet managed to win me over in the end. Let's just say that, at least in the dialects of the Jhermanic steppes, "Karut Humbol" would seem slightly more idiomatic, at least in my opinion. And "Karut Humboldt" would be even better, with the added benefit of actually sounding even more Germanic.

But anyway, fantastic work on the squad -- and I'm saying that as someone who has a tough time getting excited about Devastators, for fairly obvious reasons

Edited by KrautScientist

It's all in good-natured jest, Kraut! So definitely don't file this under column B! I also like your alternative spelling and have editted the above (and the master list) accordingly. I know you're not the long ranged type - if anything, your choice of legion is a dead give-away of that  - so I tried to work that into the fluff a bit. And I'm glad you like the MkIII helmet, I know you're into those and it's why I gave you that marine over the one with the knife mag-clamped on his pauldron. In any case, I'm sorry that it's a devastator (especially a grav devastator - I'm with you on how fugly those weapons are) - but there has been ample chance to name an assault marine over the last two weeks - there were 18 to be named! In other words - I miss you dude! Come over here more often! :) I'm not sure if there will be any close combat oriented Imperial Fists infantry anytime soon, and if the to-do's in the master list are any indication, nor will there ever be. But I will be working on another Juggerlord for my KDK during the upcoming ETL, and I would love it if we finally do some World Eaters fluff integration of your Eternal Hunt and my Prostration's Cull.

Edited by Augustus b'Raass

Oh, don't worry -- I realise it's all in good fun -- and I think that piece of fluff is rather clever, including the CC angle.

As for the naming, I think I've already had my shot with Volt Gerbrandt (and now with Brother Humboldt, of course), so I am more than content. I might have a couple of fluff-related ideas, though, so I'll definitely be contacting you about that, hopefully in the near future. And I think you'll be happy to know I am currently building that vexillarius taking inspiration from your vanguard standard bearer -- update TBA soon, hopefully

Edited by KrautScientist
Great squad, I wasn't too convinced about the alternate armour of the sergeant but it looks better now that they're all painted in the same way. Also it is interesting to see more aggressive poses on a devastador squad, I suppose that it is the benefit of not equipping them all with grav cannons ;).

Thanks everyone. Here's WiP pictures of the last five of XII Devastator Squad.  I know I've been asking a lot with the names and all, lately. It's just that having the miniatures named really inspires me to make the best of them. So if anyone knows a good name for these, anything at all, feel free. FLuff is also cool, I think I've proven that I can incorporate that well enough into their back stories. :D

@ KrautScientist: Sounds good! I know I still owe you a Night Lords apothecary, but seeing as that project is done, inspiration-wise, I might do a Death Guard Nurgle Lord that is basedf on that original character / I´m planning on doing a Death Guard army next... In any case, I am very much looking forward to that Vexilla of yours!

@ The Traitor: Haha thanks. Well, four heavy weapons is the maximum one can take in a Devastator squad...

@ Mechanist: Well, the fluff you add to ´your´ guys is very cool and fits my army´s style, so you're welcome to them.

@ sockwithaticket: Cheers! Thanks for noticing. Yeah it's a new idea I had, but one that seems very logical to me: all marines in the combat squad need to have a function. Plus having the bolter guys stand around doing nothing is kinda boring no? Might as well give them some fluff :)

Thanks. All of the names so far have been based on a manipulation of real world people I've discovered through a non 40k project me and a friend are doing. nearly every name has come from my side of the project then badly germanised for the fists so the fluff at least has some form or relation to the real life of the original person.
I only ever found the name for Vexillarius Jehan Shtapol and that he was a banner bearer hence suggesting him for Vexillarius but without any fluff.

I think with 5 names now I'll take a break and stop procrastinating from the Masters assignment I should be doing, though I'll be watching the continuation of the project as always since your work is so good especially considering the speed you pump them out.

Finally managed to get through most of this thread this weekend, and I have to say you work is absolutely fantastic both modelling and painting wise! Each marine seems to have a personality and a history just visually even before reading their fluff! Really look forward to what you do with this latest squad :D
