IHF's HH Designs [08/04 Ironwrought/Praevian Consul]

I would hope that your giant melta cannon would have better range than a magna melta tongue.png though the wrecker and ignores cover is nice

Okay, maybe 24" then - but I want to keep it short ranged.

Basically, the question is - for between 300 & 400 points, would you take one? [Armour will be 14/14/13 & comes with Flare Shield standard] & would this actually be any good VS a titan? Also, does it need a quirky unique rule to make it stand out a bit?

Edit:

What about an alternate mode of fire that can only be used against super-heavies / gargantuan creatures that is changed to strength D, but changes to heavy 1 & adds the Gets Hot rule?

Okay, here's what I'm thinking for the Orthrus:

BS:      Front Armour:    Side Armour:    Rear Armour:   SP:

 4                 14                        14                  13                  2

Unit Type:   Super-Heavy Vehicle (Tank)

Wargear: Orthrus Melta Scourge (Primary weapon), Searchlight, Smoke Launchers, Flare Shield

Special Rules: Reactor Blast

Orthrus Melta Scourge:

Weapon:                            Range:      Strength:     AP:      Special:

Orthrus Melta Scourge             24"              10              1         Melta, Wrecker, Ignores Cover, Large Blast (5")

Orthrus Melta Scourge             18"               D               1         Heavy 1, Gets Hot!, Target Priority

(Overload)

Target Priority: Due to the inherent danger of overloading the Orthrus's primary weapon, both to the vehicle itself and its crew, most tank commanders would only ever consider utilizing its secondary firing mode against the highest priority targets - a fact reinforced by the fact that the electrostatic discharge caused by the reactor in such circumstances invariably disabled the Melta Scourge's targeting systems, meaning only the largest targets could realistically be engaged. The overload weapon profile for the Orthrus Melta Scourge may only be used against models with the Super-Heavy Vehicle, Super-Heavy Walker, or Gargantuan Creature unit type.

kaboom muahahaha

Aye, but is it balanced? Would you be happy using it / playing against it?

The Orthrus is a beast.

Do you have anything involving rad missiles and flame weapons in mind?

Says the Death Guard player :P

Not really - the vilifiers are probably all I'm gonna do on the destroyer-oriented front, and I hate to say, but I'm not a huge fan of flamers on tanks, and I'm doubtful I could add anything interesting in that respect.

When it comes down to it, this stuff is basically what I'd image would be feasible, practical, useful and desirable in 30k - its all about the fluff.

yeah i would to both, the short range therefore meaning it has to get in the opponents range is a good balance. it would also have the rule of cool on its side too

Thats kinda what I was thinking - its a pretty good tank hunter, but you'll really have to keep moving it about to give it worthwhile targets. And its anti-titan version is pretty destructive, but the thing is, you need to get it to the titan, which is probably throwing D strength attacks around, so its basically a race between your opponent destroying it & it reaching their shiny super unit and turning it into all kinds of goo :P

Here she is then:

Tell me what you think - especially in terms of the points cost smile.png

EDIT: stealth rules update

LEGION ORTHRUS HEAVY TANK DESTROYER:

Legion Orthrus: BS: 4 Armour: 14/14/13 HP: 6

Unit Composition:

  • 1 Orthrus Heavy Tank Destroyer

Unit Type:

  • Super-heavy vehicle (Tank)

Wargear:

  • Orthrus melta scourge
  • Searchlight
  • Smoke launchers
  • Flare shield

Special Rules:

  • Dangerous Reactor Core

Options:

  • The vehicle may take any of the following upgrades:

-Hunter-killer missile

-Armoured Ceramite

  • The Orthrus may take one of the following sets of two sponson weapons:

-Heavy bolters

-Lascannon

  • The Orthrus may take one of the following pintle-mounted weapons:

-Twin-linked bolter

-Combi-weapon

-Heavy flamer

-Heavy bolter

-Multi-melta

Orthrus Melta Scourge:

An immense thermic weapon designed around the atomantic arc-reactors of the Cerberus Heavy Tank Destroyer, the colossal stresses unleashed by this weapon's thermal output meant the Orthrus required constant maintenance.

Orthrus Melta Scourge: Range: 24" Strength: 10 AP: 1 Type: Heavy 1, Melta, Wrecker, Ignores Cover, Large Blast (5")

Orthrus Melta Scourge (Overload): Range: 18" Strength: D AP: 1 Type: Ordnance 1, Gets Hot!

Feedback on the overall points cost would really be appreciated - I know the upgrade costs are fine, but I was really guessing with the Caelus, although the Orthrus I'm more sure about

Edit: redundant version of Caelus rules removed - see post 191

Oops, left interceptor in there - its supposed to only be skyfire - maybe I should reduce its cost?

Or do you think it'd be betterif I just gave it interceptor & kept it at 115pts?

Something else I've started work on.

I've been so impressed by the portraits in Extermination, I've decided to do a few myself. They won't be restricted exclusively to members of the Clan, but they will all have had a significant role in Brannsar's history towards the end of the Great Crusade / start of the Heresy. What I'll be doing is making sure for each peripheral character I draw, I'll have to do an Iron Hand before I can move on to the next outsider.

Here's the current list:

*Preceps Maxima of the Legio Cruciu Titan Maniple Ebon Vigil

*Archmagos of the Davorin cohort attatched to the Clan [both of these will be female to provide a nice change from having to draw beefed up blokes]

*Seneschal of an as yet undecided knight house

*Warsmith Ozul of the IV, Iron Lord Volus Phrixus' most notorious rival

*An Emperor's Children commander

*A Salamanders Tank Commander to whom the Second Armoured Echelon is attached

*An officer in the Clan's chainveil auxiliaries

Brannsar Marines:

*Fleet Archon

*Marshal of the servitor war contingents

*Iron Father

*Leader of the Clan's Terminator Elite

*Spearhead-Centurion

So, here's the beginning of our first candidate, a White Scars officer of the 124th Expedition to which Order Triarii is attached - I haven't figured out his exact rank yet, and I'll be adding some details to make him more Scars-ey, but this is the basic structure:

Maybe reduce its points cost, have LV Targeting grant interceptor, and increase the upgrade's points cost?

Problem solved - and it was so simple tongue.png

Here you go:

EDIT: stealth rules update:

LEGION CAELUS AIR-DEFENSE BATTERY:

Designed in the latter days of the Great Crusade, the Caelus was produced to adress re-supply issues which had begun to emerge as the Expeditionary Fleets pushed further out into the reaches of the Galaxy. Prior to its deployment, most Legion anit-aircraft assets relied upon specialised missile munitions, which were complex to manufacture and often in short supply with Legion deployments away from the major Expeditionary Fleets.By fitting a Rhino chassis with an Avenger Bolt Cannon variant, Legions were provided with anti-aircraft firepower that made use of the ubiquitous and easy to manufacture heavy bolter shell. Despite its practicality, the Caelus was controversial within the ranks of the Mechanicum, its turret assembly being developed an undisclosed prototype obtained from a rival Forge World via 'unorthodox' means.

Legion Caelus: BS: 4 Armour: 11/11/10 HP: 3

Unit Composition:

  • 1-3 Caelus Air-Defense tanks

Unit Type:

  • Vehicle (Tank)

Wargear:

  • Anemoi Pattern Avenger Bolt Cannon
  • Searchlight
  • Smoke launcher
  • Twin-linked bolter

Options:

  • The vehicle may take any of the following options:

-Hunter-killer missile

-Dozer Blade

-Auxiliary Drive

-Extra Armou

Anemoi Pattern Avenger Bolt Cannon:

Fitted with a suite of target-tracking auspexes, the Anemoi pattern mounted the standard Avenger bolt cannon within a prototype turret design, allowing it to unleash a maelstrom of anti-aircraft fire without the need for specialised munitions.

Anemoi Pattern Avenger Bolt Cannon: Range: 36" Strength: 6 AP: 3 Type: Heavy 7, Munition Jam, Skyfire, Interceptor

Munition Jam:

With its turret assembly developed from an incomplete prototype, an unfortunate side effect of the bolt cannon's range of movement was the propensity of its ammunition feed to jam. If three or more results of '1' are made in one shooting phase when rolling To Hit with this weapon, it may not be fired in the subsequent turn.

Oh, wow. That's really cool. Wish I had your skill.

(Once you're done you wouldn't, er, be open to requests, would you? I have money... tongue.png )

Oh noes. Don't bring money into this. Because my thought train will be as follows:

Ehrmaghed, I can get paid to draw space marines........I mean, I don't really need to study for my degree right? They can't be that hard. Who even needs a degree anyway?

And then bam! Debt. Homelessness. Illness. Death. All because you tempted me with money msn-wink.gif

For heavy 7, I'll take three and pay the extra 105pts for low vector TA.

Also if your guys wanna fight my guys I'm willing to let you have names for fluff purposes. Coz you make awesome stuff here!

I mean, that not too cheap is it? I made it an option because I didn't want it to basically be an anti-infantry killwagon

And when you say 'fight my guys', I read 'emotionlessly murderise my guys' msn-wink.gif - I'll contact you if an opening comes up

See I don't see it as 100% effective anti troop, due to it being a deidcated anti air, what's worth the points is the interceptor. Pummeling those pesky flying things would be the goal as many folk seem to be taking them. I think the cost in points is fair as its AV isn't too high all round. You have achieved good balance in both your vehicle designs

Oh, wow. That's really cool. Wish I had your skill.

But at least you'd draw some awesome Space Marines in the meantime. (I never thought I'd see anyone so reluctant to be offered money...)

For those of you who've been here since the start of the thread, you'll probably know about the Land Raider Achilles variants I designed. Remember this guy?

gallery_53779_9225_591.png

I'll be making a rules page for each of them

Great! I liked those designs, but they always felt a little out-of-place in this thread, for some reason. Probably because they're edited models rather than illustrations, odd as it may sound.

[grumbles at the fact that only one of the things that you've posted I'd feel justified in using in one of my armies]
