SW1's Scenery Project - Buildings on the way!

The fan was thanks to a rather expensive repair to my water boiler last year. I'd put it to one side and it got forgotten/buried under a load of rubbish in the hobby room.

Having to sort the hobby room out as it's becoming a bedroom so more goodies keep turning up.

I'll still retain a little corner but hobby space is drastically reducing. So I've got even more incentive to make my brothers table really good as it's probably going to end up as my main gaming place in the near future.

I've got the strips cut for edging the first board and have decided on a layout. Insulation will be chopped and glued tomorrow when me and my brother have our next board building session. We've now got into a routine of doing a few hours every Friday morning something hobby wise.

Pic will be up tomorrow with the progress. :D

Well Friday was a damp squib. I might of mentioned my brother has a few health issues and some days he just isn't in the mood to do anything. It was a challenge to even get him up out of bed, I managed to eventually get him up dressed and fed but he wasn't board building. He decided hibernation is the order of the day which with the weather wasn't a surprise.

To top it off I've managed to put my back out as well. So very little of anything has been done. I'll expect as soon as I'm feeling more in shape to get more done.

Time for an update.

I've managed to get some strips of foamboard cut. Should be able to get the outlines of the recessed areas sorted pretty sharpish, then it's time for the fun bit which is the detailing and finally infill with insulation foam.

I was expecting to cover the board and then cut into the insulation but it quickly became apparent that wouldn't have worked.

I'll get the foam board down and then take some pics. ;)

Here's the start of the tile:

And the recessed section I've stated detailing:

Think it's going to work nicely and can't wait to get the first one finished. :D

With the amount of pipes I want to stick into these holes I think I'm going to need to paint it black first otherwise there won't be access to get my brushes where they need to be. I also need to work on getting some cables into the mix as well.

Maybe having a shelf going across with cables in top?

Got the edging on all of the recessed areas sorted. Just blocking in with insulation board inbetween. Threw on a few of the mdf squares to get a rough idea as to how it'll end up looking:

Not all the boards will have this much recessed areas. ;)

I've not quite worked out what's going in the centre of the board yet but the bloking in and pipe details should be sorted quite quickly.

Once everything is cut to size it's surprisingly quick to sort out. :D

The four rows of small squares will be the location points for the supports for walls. So those squares will be removable and the wall supports will slot in. If the walls are not being used then they will remain covered up.

I still need to sort out the casting of the squares to cover the rest of the board.

The 2' x 2' tiles will be where the modular part of the ground level stops. There will be removable hatches/tiles over the small recessed sections (the 4 rows of 4 small squares) which when the board is being played on as a flat surface will be in place hiding them. When there is a need for some walls the hatches will be pulled up and replaced with pillars which have grooves in them. Between the pillars, wall sections will be able to be slotted into the grooves of 2 of the pillars.

The phones charged so here's how it looks now:

With some tiles and the grating on (not decided on what's covering the hatches so tried smaller sections of grating on a few):

Now working on the recessed sections. They'll all need blacking out before I stick stuff in as it gets hard to stick a brush in every nook and cranny.

Here's the first recessed section currently squeezing in a few extra pipes (not sure how well it shows with it mainly being black on black):

Will also be doing something slightly different with the longer recessed bits. They will have BIG pipes and I'm not sure exactly how detailed they'll end up looking. Currently looking like this but will definitely need some rivets!!!:

If we're doing a board for your shed we'll need to make it with something a bit more damp proof or heavily varnish it with multie layers of gloss and then matt it back.

Getting my airbrush delivered ... Scrub that ... Just delivered!!!

Right ... wanted to play with the airbrush but not sourced airbrush cleaner yet. From what I understand the main issue is keeping it clean. Do this and you'll get a long life from your brush. Don't and you'll end up with a clogged up useless brush.

Payday today so I'm hoping to get to a hobby supply store to get the bits I need! I'm also looking for random plastic bits to add detail with that are either free or just pennies rather than spending daft amounts on bits. I think some sort of computer bits need sourcing.

Tomorrow will see the first pour on my moulds for the board surface. I always get a bit nervous I'll mess up the pour on a mould as it's the trickiest bit of the casting process.

Spent all last night trying to work out if any local hobby shops sell anything airbrush. I'm coming up with a big fat no. Even hobbycraft doesn't carry anything other than food safe airbrush cleaner but that's just for cleaning food colouring out of airbrushes rather than acrylic paint.

From trawling may online forums it seems that mr muscle window cleaner (has to be the green one without vinegar in it) is my answer for now and I'll have to order Vallejo stuff online

Ended up getting some IPA alcohol ordered through the local pharmacy. Should be picking up 500ml for just over £8 later today if they could get it in. If not will be Monday/Tuesday. So this means I need something to paint. So I need to crack in with the boards ASAP as they will be more forgiving painting wise than actual models. :D

Well I've managed to do diddly squat in March with the boards. Infact I've only managed to strip a few guard and that's it.

I've taken to sketching (well maybe more like badly drawn approximations) ideas down in a scrap book to keep the hobbyist in me from going insane. Not sure if others find it hard to capture ideas on paper? I find I end up drawing and re-drawing repeatedly before it looks even vaguely like the idea in my head.

Managed to stumble across a supplier of evergreen plastics so a supply of tubes, H-beams and rods was acquired. I also nipped into a local haberdashery to peruse the sowing section and came across some plastic mesh normally used for cross stitching. I think it might work for scenery building so got some of that as well.

Got 5 hours booked in on Friday to make some head way on the scenery front. So hopefully I'll have some actual progress shots finally!!!

Progress was sorting through many boxes of old scenery and bits. The hobby room is more organised but actual forward movement on the boards was lacking.

What it does mean is next week we'll be able to work in the hobby space rather than lugging everything down 2 fight of stairs to the kitchen. :)

  • 3 months later...

It's been a very long time since I did anything on the boards. Today my brother came over for a few hours and we've been working on some masters for the tiles that will be gracing the boards. Will be leaving them to dry overnight and tomorrow evening try pouring a mould or three.

We've also been working on the pipes in the recesses. Rather than do multiple layers of pipes and not be able to reach them with a brush we've decided to do a layer, paint it up and then do the next layer. They've been roughly slapped with a first coat of paint as well.

I'll edit pics in when I get on the laptop. ;)

Cheers ... Got a little hooked up on sorting my guard out (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/301374-dragging-the-guard-back-out-ogryn-chop-shop-pg-13/page-14?do=findComment&comment=4108359) and my brother had lost interest in the project. He's now back into wanting it sorted and I need the space all the raw material are taking up.

There's a major drop in hobby space again. So I've been really cutting down on space waste. Pic re that will be up later as well. :D

Here's where I'm at with the first 3 masters ...

First up is a 100mm x 100mm section of flooring:

gallery_25187_11097_173021.jpg

This will likely get used as the central section to this board and likely find itself being used in some form of repeating pattern on other boards.

The other two are sections 50mm x 100mm:

gallery_25187_11097_197982.jpg

These will save me a fair amount of work finishing the first board off with the top one filling in the gaps between the recessed areas and the bottom once used as the edging. The main issue with using the GWS bases as the main shapes is they are not close enough to 50mm so they would need excessive effort spacing them. Mounting them on sheets which are within 0.1mm accuracy (measure twice cut once) will save a load of time in the long run.

I'll need 16 of the top one and 22 of the bottom totalling 38 casts which when compared to casting 60 of the 50mm squares and 64 of the 25mm squares highlights the time savings.

The board with the grids slapped on top and the 3 masters on looks like this:

I think once I get cracking with the casting it'll come on leaps and bounds quickly. Just need to get my ETL vow completed first!!!
