SW1's Scenery Project - Buildings on the way!

Recommended Posts

Right managed to use up the last of my holidays so now work for me today. The plan was hobby and now the wife knows I've got it off it seems some additional jobs have been added to the list.

I WILL get some hobby done today even if it's just removing the flash from the 192 holes in this mesh I'm using. Think that job is the most time consuming in the entire process. :D

Spent every chance I had trimming the flash away today. Probably another hour or so worth of work to finish off. Then I can decide on which texture I'll be using in the white sections in the rough layout pic earlier. :D

That's some fine attention to detail you have there fella. Shame that your holiday time got pinched by the missus ;)

Lol ... And it was worth it in the end. ;)

Well progress has been made on the textured card front. I've applied it to the back of the mesh where needed. Though it's taken a lot more of the textured plasticard than I was planning to use, with only a few scraps left over from an A4 sheet which I'd assumed would do 2 pieces this size. I can see a lot more being ordered in the new year to get this project completed.

Sorry for the low quality pic, it's getting a bit late so the lighting a rubbish and I'm knackered.

Next up is building the walls which will go around the recessed sections. This was going to be me carving into big sheets of foamboard. But I've now decided to build it up with strips of foam board and mount it on a singe big sheet instead. It'll drop the amount of wastage drastically.

Got more done last night. With most of the surrounding walls for the recessed parts now complete.

Bit of a closer look at how deep it's going to be (10mm rather than just 5mm).

Got no time during the day to get anything worked on hobbywise today until later on. Really want to crack on with the detailing now I've got this far. :D

Cheers WP.

Been on the lookout for more interesting bits and while helping sort out my brothers place I came across a box that is used to transport UHT cartons of milk in. It's short ends are quite high but the longer sides are cut away ...

To most it's a box. But invert it and it turns into the starting point of some form of lift ...

Erm ... It'll work out with plenty of gubbins applied. Well ... I think it will anyway. ;)

Just checked and something like a Stormlord will just about squeeze through as long as any weapons on the sponsons are pointing forward with a few mm spare. However it won't be lifting one from another level of the ship as it's not quite deep enough to take the length of the super heavy. Plus once I've started adding stuff to it I doubt a SH will fit if it has sponsons.

Lol ... So in answer to the question I didn't spot until after I posted ...

Yes it'll fit a rhino or other sized vehicle easily. :D

Edit: Just checked and even a talon of 3 dreads will nicely fit with plenty of space/headroom.

Cheers for the updates, you've actually inspired me to get cracking on some scenery pieces myself, so thanks :D

Excellent, can't wait to see how you get on. Make sure you post how you're doing. ;)

Think this is finished for now until I work out to fit it into a board section. :)

Lessons learned from this one:

- 10mm is more than adequate for tricking the eye. ;)

- glue the sheets together using wood glue (masking tape helps keep things in place)

- work out the layout of pipes and cut any required channels BEFORE putting the backing card on the recesses

- trim out lots of little squares to cover each hole rather than using a big sheet (the 2.5mm saving per square adds up very quickly and cutting a strip to then trim squares off doesn't take too long) you can also alter the layout easier if you make a mistake popping off individual squares rather than big sections

- replace your blades as they start becoming blunt rather than after they're very blunt (it'll avoid the foam in the foamboard ripping and as you'll not nee to force the blade through the material it's a LOT safer)

Not enough likes for this thread mate. that board section looks amazing! my board sections are no where near your quality

Cheers mate. Just takes time and being willing to accept a bit of trial and error on the way.

Does this look like the starting of some form of air scrubber or other vent type gizmo possibly found in a spaceship?

The mdf circle will be removable so I can alter with minimal effort as it's a snug fit.

Well here's how the vent has ended up looking:

And here's how it breaks down:

My original plan was to have the mdf disk removable. However gluing it down will be required to keep the bigger pipes in place. I managed to remove the writing from the inhailer but left the inverted "V". I may end up using it again throughout the ship. Maybe on some shipping containers or similar items.

I think I'll make a 2nd matching vent and have them as scatter scenery rather than fixing them in place on the board.

Earlier on I had a check on my materials and the boards I thought were 2' wide are half an inch short along one side. So I ended up thinking I can either carry on with the main piece and fudge it or start again converting it into something else.

Then a brain wave. I split the board in half slapped a thin piece between the two. Piece of card glued up the back and the start of a 2'x2' board is there and the edges are a lot more square.

To give a better sense of size here's a pic of the bodged 2'x2' base and the recessed detail:

Thinking of storage for the boards I need to keep them as flat as possible. So I'm now thinking of ways to be able to attach walls and easily remove them. I could leave recesses which would either have a removable cover which I could then remove and slot walls into (could be handy for attaching the boards together when in use) or magnets which I have in the bits box somewhere but never actually used.

If I go with the first option I'll probably fabricate the joining section out of plasticard and line the inside of the holes with plasticard or tubing of some form.

If I go for the second option I guess the magnets will be glued to the underside of plasticard which will be glued onto the top of the boards.
