Malakai
I'm doing a Word Bearer army in 40K. So they're out. Still they have some great upgrade kits on FW. All the runes and glyphs. Easily my favorite kit. Their characters are pretty nice too. Just painting two Word Bearer armies, I don't see it. Loyalists are out. Just not interested. Sons of Horus is my front runner but I'm not a fan of their upgrade sprue. They look overly ornate and a little too Chaos40K Marine to me. I've thought about ebaying some heads with top knots and just using those with the MkIV armor in the BaC box. Decals and brass etch bits should help. May get one upgrade sprue to scatter among the guys. Anyway to differentiate one squad from the other two so I can play the BaC board game with the same Legion. I'm not looking for a huge legion but how many MkIV tacticals to I really need? I'm hoping to get away with just buying the one box. Viridia
As an addendum to Slipstreams post, you can also use a minimum of just two 5x man veteran squads if you go with using the Pride of the Legion rite of war, but you'll probably want to have those both as full 10x man veteran squads. Betrayal at Calth is based on one or more squads being built as veterans anyway, I understand. Aye - Calth gives you pretty good base for a Pride list, only "problem" people seem to have with that is that it's not competetive if your meta consists of 4 Typhons, massed RG/ AL/ SoH alpha strike list and every unit taking two Spartans as transport in 2k points ;) While I jest, obviously in an established Heresy gaming group, using the Calth set as a basis could be less than tactically sound, in a new meta rife with change it can't hurt! Father Mehman
So, I'm pretty sure it's apparent that I'm a Death Guard kind of guy. The whole marching through hazardous wastes to stomp the enemy is my thing. That they come from Chernobyl is a plus, also. Here's the deal: I don't know if they're Traitor or Loyalist . I love the Imperium. It has been my duty to protect it for some odd years now so I'm a bit like a proud parent that they've lasted this long. But the Galactic Civil War? I don't know whose side I'm for. It was so easy in the 41st millennium, but looking back at the 31st millennium (or thereabouts), I don't know where my loyalties lie. Normally I'd leave this in Limbo but I want to participate in the Casual Monthly Challenge and you have to know. I mean, I should know this anyway, right? Eh, I need help. Having a core part of your force ambiguous is alright so you can play narrative games either way, but you do miss out on giving your models deeper history and character. Personally, I had to go traitor post-Istvaan. This is a point where the Death Guard still think that what they're doing is right. Mortarion has been fooled into the wrong camp by Horus. He thought he was going to help stop "witchery," the sort of nightmarish horrors that his original "father" unleashed upon an oppressed humanity on Barbarus. But Horus seems to have neatly planted the seed that the Emperor is really no different from that father (which is something the paranoid Mortarion was probably already afraid of, evidenced by Nikaea). One of the core ideas behind Mortarion, and by extension the Death Guard, is that they will accomplish their goal no matter the cost and against any obstacle. That belief becomes the start of a long, slow decline where they eventually embrace the most terrifying methods to achieve victory, and then fully succumb to that darkness and become exactly what they hated most. How the Death Guard continue to justify their actions to themselves along the way is pretty fun to think about. The whole tragedy of it makes them way more interesting to me than running them as Loyalists would be. If that appeals to you too, going Traitor might be the way for you. Guiltysparc
Hello fellow sons of the false/glorious emperor. I would appreciate any input you have to help me pick between 3 legions. World Eaters - I play KDK in 40k and love Khârn as a character, especially after reading betrayer. I absolutely loved the way the eaters were portrayed in that book as a broken and truly tragic legion. I also prefer choppy armies to shooty armies so world eaters fit that for me. I have the strongest fluff based feelings for this legion. I feel like I am a world eater at heart but want something a little different from my 40k army. Sons of Horus - Loken. Dude is such a badass. Also, Abaddon! And the man himself Horus! So much badass in one legion plus can play as traitor or loyalist. They have pretty interesting rules and cool models. They could also cover my assault leanings. Death Guard - Terminators with giant scythes! I think the death Guard have the coolest models and some of the most interesting rules/wargear. I still need to play test them but I think I would like the slow moving gun line with mop up assault style of play. I have the least amount of interest from a fluff standpoint for DG but that's not to say they aren't cool. The poison cup ritual and the general deathyness of Mortarian and the death shroud is very cool. Thanks in advance for your input. The poison cup ritual and the general deathyness of Mortarian and the death shroud is very cool. Thanks in advance for your input. So looking at your requirments you seem to be similar to me in that you can't get away from close combat armies. Ok, so all of the armies listed here are assualt armies to a degree, however the way they assualt is much different. Even though the World Eaters may be the precursors to your KDK make no mistake in that these hounds are very different. The World Eaters essentially have an entire army with rage and if you take berserker assualt then they also get hatred. They work greatly with big squads to maximize rage and they can either played as a horde of models running straight for the enemy, not stopping for anything excpet total decimation, or you can run a force all in land raiders or in super land raiders, known as the spartan. If you don't want that then you can always run a pride of the legion list which makes your special terminators into troops. This allows arguably one of the most unique ways to play the game because you need to literally kill everyone on the enemy side to win, due to you not having a single scoring unit in your army. As you can see, while the World Eaters may look similar to your KDK they actually have quite a bit of depth. Also Khârn and Angryron are badasses who will chew through most units, though they are both quite squishy. While the World Eaters are a sea of white and blue angry marines the sons of horus are suprisingly a bit more subtle. A SOH army is definently about outnumberining your enemies army in close combat, however what you really want are the reavers. The Reavers are some scary SOB's who can be given jump packs and power weapons to fly around in wreck havoc. You will have a whole lot less of them due to their extra point cost but they make up for it in quality. They are meant to be fast and hit hard and are a bit of a glass cannon due to only having a 3+. They could have a really good assualt unit in Justarien but they cost way too much to be any use. They can make a fun terminator army too since you want Abby. I think they can have those special rounds that give them ap3 on 6's. Despite being made up of Gangers the SOH are an army where you need to play with finess due to the lack of well... powerful legion special rules, at least compared to the modern day legion rules. They can have a good drop pod army however. And last but not least the Death Guard. The Death Guard are an interesting choice in that with their ROW they are a slow moving army that can hit like a truck in melee. With Rad grenades even your tacticals can cause quite a bit of damage. They arguably have some of the worst legion special rules of all time. They have a fun unit in the deathshroud however. In terms of fluff I'll let Mehman convince you . I would urge you to have a look around the tactics section in regards to all three legions. Also Welcome to the B&C and the heresy! Father Mehman
@Black_out, Phalanx Warder, and LetsYouDown- Huzzah, Brothers! You all have given me great ideas as to the loyalty of my Company, and for that I thank you ! Here's what I've got so far: Aechops (my Company for those not in the know ) gets the word to come to the Istvaan System as Mortarion is poised to punish those against Horus. I think everyone can see where this is going- they don't make it in time due to...ship trouble. Yeah. Anyway, they side with Mortarion! Yay! Of course, nothing is simple during the Heresy. Because they can't make long Warp jumps, it is decided that they will perform Strike and Burn raids on those who oppose their Primarch. It feels so good to be bad, er, a different shade of grey ! @Guiltysparc- I'm not going to lie and say I don't love the Death Guard. They embody aspects of who and what I used to be. Here's the thing: they are awesome. Allow me to explain. They trudge along, ever tall, ever stalwart in the face of horrific wars of attrition. They look Death in the face and don't care for his visage. They drink poison with their Primarch when they've done something honourable. The Death Guard are the grinding wheel of desolation. The enemies they touch turn to ash and waste so that the people they free may know no tyrant. Honour, fealty, and duty are their bynames. Are they cruel? No. They simply do what has to be done in the name of Humankind. @ThatOneMarshal- Cheers, mate ! Guiltysparc
Thanks for the input so far! I was able to play test a SoH list with a friend last night that was made up of two tac squads, a unit of jump reavers, abby and some justaerins, and a kheres mortis dread. The game was 1500pts and we played the deadly ground mission from the massacre book. He used an ad mech list that we built based 100% on the coolness of the unit names since neither of us knew much about the ad mech dudes. Myrmidons, voraxes, thallaxes, castallax...pretty wild units, so killy compared to his necron army. The Myrmidons conversion beamed 10 of 13 reavers on turn 2 so i didn't get to use them much, lol. I think i'll have a better feeling after reading through the tactica pages and play testing all 3.
