Double post but oh my god everyone needs to read Master of Mankind...

While not only an awesome insight into the Emperor and a real pivotal point of the Heresy, there is a Blood Angel and he has a great character arc with some epic pay-off.

His overall attitude and how he interacts with other characters and even what they think of him give an excellent look at the BA in general.

Plus if you are into "Bolter-Porn", I will tempt you with "Custodes & Titan battle - porn."

Charlo, you must be a slow reader Haha.

The Bringer of Sorrow is possibly my favourite BA character to date. Was trying to get to read MoM weeks ago. It's soooo good!

I enjoyed it so much I sent a message to ADB. Here's hoping he writes all the future BA fluff lol

I'd have to disagree. There's an on going joke at my locals about his writing. In a sense it goes: "Meltabombs: when you need to McGuyver kill a Titan."

His writing isn't terrible, just the scenarios he works within leave a lot to be desired. Definitely felt Wardy; a la Mephiston punching through Ork-ka-bobs after awakening.

I finally got round to batch painting a whole boatload of BA stuff I've had on my table to a while.

I also won "Best Painted Mini" at a tournament over the weekend. With about 40 other players, (some are professional commission painters) I was absolutely over the moon.

Won myself some nice new brushes and a boost of enthusiasm to paint some more. :D

After the Swallow treatment we [bA] have received, I'll take any form of McGuyver kills a whatever at this point. :)

I don't understand? Melta bombs have been used to destroy Titans in the fluff several times.

I mean yeah but they don't even shoot a "gun" granted a rocket is shot and misses, but let's just saw our way into joints with a Sword and chainsaw blade (joints plated with armor to withstand plasma) and then jimmy rig two Melta Bombs to detonate and win. It was just eye roll bad. It's in the same realm as sanguinor OHKOing the Lord of skulls when all the regular guard's ancient swords shatter as the cleave across it.

*I'm just not 12 anymore and over the top isn't what it used to be.

*in the same sense as One Punch or Dragonball Z/Super. I don't know I really used to love that style of over the top, but lately I feel like it's just all so over used. I'm just experiencing middle aged nerdness where things aren't quite as cool as they used to be.

Couldn't get the rest off ... Hopefully this will do. Don't know if i should paint & glue, or glue first. The doors all seem to work on the Rhino so I wouldn't mind doing the interior.

I still don't understand. That is literally what meltabombs are for. It's not the first time that's happened in fluff. Why would you shoot a rocket? In fluff melta bombs are far more powerful, and the joints are the weak spot. Have you read Blood Quest by chance?
because there is a scene in volume two where they do exactly that. The squad gets on the knee, and jimmy the melta bombs onto the joint, and then jump off as they blow it

None of that stuff sounds bad to me.

I mean, modern tanks are made with armor to withstand explosives but if you loaded them up with explosives on the tracks it's probably not going to move anymore.

I mean it's a 5 man Tactical squad that nukes a Reaver Titan the first time I read it was "oh lord". It's just silly. It's like when they kill clone horus with like 50 boltguns. It's just our inside joke and we use it often. Difference of opinion is all. I don't hate his writing, I just think some of his writing is silly.

I don't know, it's probably one of the most believable things in the setting. "We don't have weapons to take it down, but we do have melta bombs! What are the weak spots?"

"The joints, sergeant. If we get the joints the leg will break apart and it will fall."

If you can, check out Blood Quest Vol 2 because that exact same thing happens on an even bigger titan (Imperator size).

I can understand you view, but to me space marines are literally created to do the impossible. It's why we don't read about an Imperium of just guardsmen and stories are normally to highlight an exceptional moment. That being said while I did enjoy the fight scenes, it was mainly the ethos of the BA character and the Legion as a whole that ADB wrote about that I enjoyed the most. He captured the nobility and humility at once.

With the advent of my "local" club now running Saturday meetings, I'll hopefully have the luxury of a few games under my belt and therefore some motivation to paint too!

Got 1500 Maelstrom CAD only against a newer player with Black Templars on Saturday, I'm thinking speed is the key and I'll probably keep to maximum 3 pods as to not go over-board...!

Roughly in my head without any points i'm aiming for:

  • Jump Chaplain
  • 10 Man Tac Squad - Flamer, 2 Hand Flamer, Heavy Flamer - Pod
  • Scout Squad - Snipers, Heavy Bolter, Cloaks
  • DC Squad - Fist, 2 Swords
  • Meltacide - Pod
  • Fragioso - Pod
  • Grav Bikes

Maybe slot a Fast Vindicator or Pred in there if I can...

Decided to not run with DC, instead going for something fast and shooty with bits of melee punch secondary.

You know Mat Ward didn't write the fluff for Mephiston, right? That was around way before him. Also, 'charactet takes on impossible odds and prevails' isn't exactly a new trope. Just be glad McNeill didn't write the book. Could have been a new Sharrowkin *spits*.

I started in 5th. I liked it back 7-8 years ago. With him associated to the book I always assumed he had more of a hand involved. At the end of the day it's Science Fantasy and has ups and downs in writing like everything else. Personally I'd still like Dan Abbnett to take a stab at the Boys in Red. But I just don't think ADB is the end all be all writer for Black Library. And I ultimately enjoy his work, but my group has its inside jokes just like all Clubs.

I more or less agree. I feel like Dan Abnett is the only real (adult?) writer in the BL. I read Fear to Tread and Know No Fear pretty much simultaneously and one starkly seemed like the mature telling of basically the same event, sadly it wasn't the one with the good red guys.

lol I can understand preferences, but really? The only adult author? While I like Abnett, ADB has a far more adult and gritty feeling to his space marines.

Well for the record I quite enjoy ADB, but to me, it's still very pulpy 40k sci-fi versus Abnett which just kind of feels like historical non-fiction almost. I even like Graham McNiel, but every time I read an Abnett book I catch myself saying, 'oh yeah, this guy is actually a real author'.

Even Abbnett's books outside the 40k universe just feel more natural.

On a much more serious note DBH is now in hissy-fit mode since the Black Templars formation from Cadia gets Furious Charge on a roll of 10+ to charge. And they get to re-roll charges. Boo! Hiss! Boo!

I'm not surprised - FC is the go to "uhh these guys are an assault unit and we need a formation bonus" rule these days.

Lest we forget that a roll of 10+ on our own FT detachment grants us rage too, making us pretty similar in our rules. Re-rolling charges is a kicker though, for sure...

Shame we can't be included in said formations even!

What I'm quite liking though is the Dreadnought army supported by Cawl (new Archamagos)... With enough Ad mech support (read: Servitors and enginseers lol) we can easily reach the canticles rules that would give our walkers a 4++ save on the drop.

A later turn we then give them all 3 rolls on IWND...
