Apologize ahead of time as this seems like a shameless plug but I've been posting all my recent stuff on instagram lately if anyone wants to see what I've been painting lately:

www.instagram.com/warhamsandwich

It's mostly 30k work right now with some retakes of items I've painted over the years.

Hopefully it gets your mojo back :tu:

As for me, I've finished prepping my ETL vows (I still intend on posting the build up thread I've drafted in the very near future...)

It might! One thing is for sure, without depression clouding my mind 40k has become enjoyable again.
Also prepping for ETL, nothing fancy but at the moment i have 2 librarians, 5 lieutenants, a boat load of primaris and probably half a dozen captains in varing stages of readiness. At the moment its just base priming but should be good to kick off quickly when it starts.
Urgh. I've overestimated my free time I'm going to have. Sanguinary Noviate school, was manageable, but work has become increasingly difficult. I had so much ambition! Too much probably. I will probably vow a squad and transport and hope for the best!

I haven’t been active at all on here since work has been NUTS of late. Talk about being stuck on an endless crusade.

I have some personal events coming up that are going to take up quite a bit of time over the coming months, but I’m hopeful to knock out off units in need of completion for the ETL:

-Sanguinary Guard

-Death Company

-Attack Bikes

-Inceptors

-Dreadnought

-Death Company Dreadnought

-Contemptor Dreadnought

-Leviathan Dreadnought

-Sanguinor

-Librarian Dreadnought

-Astorath (maybe)

-Corbulo (maybe)

...I will just need to be sure to vow small and only what I can complete at a given time.

On a different note, a bit of a delayed reaction, but the following dawned on me:

S5 Lightning Claws are the “best” weapon in the game.

S5 wounds up to T9* on a 5+.

BA get +1 To Wound if we charge, so that becomes a 4+ To Wound pretty much everything in the game, re-rollable with LC ability. That’s 75% chance to Wound almost anything in the game.

So take a Sang Priest, the Sanguinor for even MOAR attacks, and some way of re-rolling To Hit (Capt, Chaplain, or the to a logical extreme, Dante).

Profit?

In a perfect world, Termies + Corbulo would be nuts, but the amount of time and effort needed to deliver them is tricky (I’ve tried).

*so even those pesky psychically enhanced Leviathan Dreadnoughts

So ten vanguard rolling dual claws backed up by a capt and lieutenant also rocking dual claws?

You wouldn't need the lieutenant, as claws have built-in wound re-rolls. I'm sure you meant priest as Indefragable suggested.

I've got a squad of Vanguard Vets that I've been trying to decide how to equip. I haven't been sold on anything specific yet but I absolutely love the aesthetic of dual claws. That sounds brilliant, but a bit expensive. I'd be worried chainswords were still the mathematically superior choice due to their no cost facilitating greater weight of dice with more bodies.

Against hordes/light units, yes, I think dual chains word win for cost effectiveness.

But LC are AP-2 and re-roll To Wound and +1A. I think that’s why they are such a sweet spot as a true all-rounder. You’re making 2+ saves become 4+.

For comparison, SW can take Frost Claws that are S+1 LCs...but the beauty is that w/ a Sang Priest we can do it even better b/c of our Red Thirst.

With VV, you get 3++ stormshields as well, making them quite an all rounder unit.

The problem with lightning claws is that they tend to specialise in killing Elite infantry in an edition where Elite infantry are one of the weaker builds. Plasma, assault cannons and even bolter Inceptors look like more points-efficient ways to kill heavy infantry. As soon as you start running into multi-wound models then LCs struggle against more dedicated weapons like Hammers.

Let's imagine a 10-man Vanvet unit with LCs against a Knight. 290 points will net you 30 attacks giving 20 hits and 15 wounds, 10 of which will get throught the save. And they are still only 10 T4 wounds behind a 3+ save. The same points will get you 8 Van vets with TH/SS. Against a Knight they will get 20 attacks giving 10 hits and 6.67 wounds. This becomes 16.7 wounds once saves and the 3 damage are taken into account. Those Van Vets also have a 3++ which makes them a lot more durable against any weapon with an AP modifier.

Against hordes, chainswords (or even DC) are better value for their points.

You may find that LC VanVets are the perfect compromise unit. The problem to my mind is that they are best at killing middle-of-the-road targets which are not exactly setting the meta alight and are not really where Marines need help.

I don’t disagree especially there is always a more precise tool for any job out there.

But S5 lightning claws are kinda the Scatter Lasers of yesteryear in the sense that they can reliably hurt pretty much everything in the game with some reliability. They will certainly not be the most efficient in a lot of cases, but in a Take All Comers setting they can be a useful all purpose option.

Testing is over for a week and a half. I'm going to be on a well deserved holiday.

My activities in the preceding days is probably going to fall some. Sad to say I haven't rolled dice in almost a month. The last few games haven't been kind to the Carmine Blades either.

Tough times in the hobby. Maybe I need to build something to make myself feel better.

A squad of DC with Hand Flamers & chainswords? A mix of TH/SS + LC vets? MOAR terminators? MOAR sanguinary guard? Hmmm.
