Okay, so I have been experimenting with my airbrush.

I got it at Christmas and it was a super cheap set, consisting of compressor with moisture trap, hose and 2 dual action airbrush guns.

Got to say it is a lot of fun!!

Anyway before starting  I did a fair amount of research and while a lot of folks do how to videos, a lot do not go into much detail on pressures etc.

For those starting out like me, I hope that some of this proves useful.

This goes from what to buy through to some basic and intermediate techniques

If anyone has any other tutorials or videos which might be useful, or you feel I have missed anything let me know, so I can add it to the repository of knowledge

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think.

So, another few hours messing around with the airbrush yesterday.

The greys are pretty much done.

I had a few issues with the airbrush, with it clogging. Not sure if the pressure is set too low or if I put too much paint in the cup.

Putting a touch more thinner in helped out.

I did a comparison againt the finished Spartan to make sure the greys match and it is pretty close. The Spartan will have taken 8-10 hours on its own to get the greys done. So far 6-7 hours has got 5 land raiders, 2 predator sized tanks a Caestus, a Typhon and 2 drop pods so a similare state.

The grey highlights still feel a little soft, so I am thinking to do a small amount of edge highlighting with administratum grey, and possibly some blacklining with agrax to finish off

This is my work bench :D

For contrast, I have decided to do the underside of my Caestus with Dawnstone and high light to administratum grey.

Edge highlights will be with longbeard grey.

I think the two-tone effect works well.

What do you think?

Thanks Mithrilforge. I was actually at a kids party that my son was attending today.

My first thought upon seeing the lady doing facepainting was " I could do that with my airbrush!!"

Bladewolf. Go for it!! I very much doubt the apartment will explode, but it is a lot of fun and darned versatile. I have had loads of fun playing around with it and I am glad it has become another tool in my painting arsenal :)

Got ot say I am struggling a wee bit.

Does anyone have experience with GW air metallics?

Do they benefit from thinning?

I have found them a bit runny and easy to make pool on the models.

Also what about other gw colours, can they be converted to airbrush-able paints?

If so how much do I dilute them by?

Lastly, the tanks are looking a bit mono-chrome. Any ideas on how to liven them up a bit?

Cheers

Looking good to me :) Are you thinking of adding some knotwork patterns like your other tanks ? If so, you might not want to add to many extra colours, or it'll end up being a bit visually hectic...

Thanks betrayer41.

I am an admirer of your Alpha's & Wolves too.

I will likely use red on the lascannons and other areas.

The knotwork on these will be done later when I can figure out a good way to do them.

I am also going to have to source Valkyrie names for the tanks and a dragon name for the Caestus.

Any ideas?

I would use tamiya or vallejo, except for the fact there are no stockists that I know near me.

With a gw close by I can order in the paints without paying high postage costs or spending a ton for free shipping.

As it is I ony have a handful of air paints, so I am curious to see if traditional paints can be used..

Lord Thorn.

Knotwork and Valkyrie names will come in time.

The Caestus is yhe big headache, especially the missile pods.

I hate hazard striping and not a masive fan of big bold colours, but it needs something to break up all the grey.

Over the next day or so I will get into the detailigng. Tracks will get dulled down a bit.

Might put stripes on the rear of the Typhon like the Spartan. Not sure yet.

What is it you hate about hazard stripes ? the concept/aspect or the act of painting them ? If it's the first you could consider trying chessboard patterns ? Or else simple runes ?

How about Eir (Clemency - ironic obviously) or Þögn (Silence)

Lord Thorn.

The hazard stripes? I could do yhem okay, I am judt concerned that the bright yellow would be too much of a contrast.

Runes might work though.

Balthamal.

Which tank should be called Eir?

Togn is a good name. However my Sicaran already bares the name.

Reginleif is my Fellblade.

Herja my Landraider Achilles

Night Fury my Fire Raptor.

Hjorprimul my Spartan.

I was thinking more along the lines of black and white checkerboards since you didn't seem keen on Hazard Stripes: it would be a lot less bold, yet break up the "monotony" a bit

Balthamal. Eir sounds cool, but I have sort of set my heart on naming the tanks after the norse valkyries, and the flyers after great dragons of mythology.

Unfortunately I can only fond 3 names for Norse dragons, so other suitable names might be considered (I named my first Fire Raptor, Night Fury after toothless from How to train your dragon :biggrin.: ).

I might consider famous eagle/hawk names if there are any.

So now I need names for:

1 Predator

1 Scorpius

2 Land Raiders

1 Land Raider Helios

1 Land Raider Redeemer

1 Land Raider Crusader

1 Typhon

2 drop pods.

As for names:

Thanks Betrayer41. Your stuff is pretty awesome too.

I regularly surf the interwebs and if I see something I like I generally add it on here in my gallery for vehicle designs.

It is a bit hodge-podge at the moment, but it does work for me, and is a good reminder.

Link is below.

Feel free to use the designs if any take your fancy. You can also post up on here too, it'll help keep me motivated

So anyways. This is as far as I have gotten, which is not much further.

I am now unfortunately offshore for the next 3 weeks, and I have decided that rather than call these done and move on to something else, I would rather hold back and get them done properly. Even if it costs me a massive delay in my vow schedule.

Sometimes quality is better then speed, and I would feel like I have cheated if I kept my stuff so basic.

For the Caestus, I still have not decided if I want to change the colour of the twin hulls on the top panel, running down to the sides.

I had considered a cream colour, so I could add the red wolf head, which seems to have become the legion symbol. Or I could go with a nice deep red, as tis would work  well with the gold used for the knot work. Also if I run knot work down the side, would adding designs on top make it a little busy?

Then I had a really insane thought.

What about doing the lower section in a very dark brown colour? The way it swoops up for the front , it could conceivably look like a longboat, then run the knot work through it.

Am I insane?

As always let me know what you think
