OK, let's get some actual painted pics, shall we?

Pankrator half finished. Excuse the blurry pictures - I can't find my actual camera and the phone will have to do for now.

Have you considered a light khaki for the leather? That way it doesn't pop too much or make it seem too patrician.

You win the prize, brother - I think these look much better than either red or brown. Keen to hear your thoughts.

I'm loving it. I think it came out just right, not too garish but not to mellow. One thing, only because someone else might mention, It seems close it color to the basing. My thoughts(take into consideration I do like it) is there a way to darken the leather a smidge to separate it from the base? Is that reasonable/make sense.

Fair point brother. I'll play around with a wash or two and see what it looks like in the flesh.

Thanks for looking! Finally got WIPs of the Praetor and his even-more-WIP scenic base. As you might notice, the head is magnetised. The current thinking is to do gold leaf laurels on the MkIV helm. I'm still mulling over the colour scheme for this guy in my head.

Edited by Brother-Captain Arkhan

Augustus looks really, really cool both with and without the helmet, though perhaps a crest or plume for the helmet? As for the colour scheme? I'm not sure, maybe throw some white in there perhaps, though I do know Ultramarine lieutenants had blue helmets with a gold stripe down the centre (at least that's what's portrayed in Tempest I believe) so I'm not sure if that's something to consider.

PS, before reading this I had walked right into a wall with painting my own heresy-era Ultramarines, but this inspired me to pick up a paintbrush and get cracking, so thanks for that :)

Thanks, brothers and sisters. I hope the paint job will do him justice. Speaking of, I've included a pair of colour scheme mock-ups I can't decide between at the end of this post. I already know the decoration of Augustus' shield will match the breachers (with transfers denoting a line captain), and that the cloak is likely to be black and red. The armour scheme is still something I'm working on, however. Any thoughts welcome.

Really really cool mini and base. I think he looks better without the helmet, although if some plumes were added he would look really imposing.

Cheers dude. Yep, I like him without the helmet more.

Yep I'm planning on following Tempest's iconography pretty closely. Glad to hear you got some inspiration to work on your own boys, post some pics! :)

LOVE!!!! GREAT POSE. Also that model makes me love the sword....

:biggrin.: Yeah, I liked it the moment I saw it!

Where is that scarred head from? Looks good.

Sternguard set if I'm not mistaken.

One thing with Augustus. The eagle and skull thing on his tabard looks off centered, is that just me or is it supposed to be angled with the tabard?

No, it is supposed to be angled, but lots of people have commented how weird it looks. I will probably be shifting its position to the lower part of his abdominal armour.

Real nice looking Ultras.  For the praetor how about reversing the colour scheme black with blue pads etc?

See below :)

I love them. Really good. One question - where did the leather strap/kilts (?) come from?

Anvil Industry. Been using Anvil since they were founded and they do not disappoint.

Oh, now that is wonderful. I'm tempted to build my own display base now.

Always happy to inspire brother. Post pics when you do!

Damn, that dude is a stone cold badass. Nice work!

Cheers brother.

As for colour schemes...

or...

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/spacemarine_zpsny3akvey.jpg

Whichever one works out, I'll likely end up copying it for the Invictarus comitatus sent to watch over the Black One Hundred...

The other option, which I didn't try to photoshop as I didn't have time, is to go with the exact same colour scheme as the regular Marines (blue but with black pads) but put a black stripe over his primary heart and repeat the stripe somewhere else. Less overt, more subtle, maybe allows me to use more blue overall to make the model pop.

That said, I'm also leaning towards #2.

From the journal of battle-brother Gaius Tereas, company unknown, 79th Chapter, XIII Legion 'Ultramarines'

[...] We were four days in the tunnels beneath Solisiphon City fighting those Khrave bastards back into their lairs. It wasn't until our Destroyer cadres had saturated the breeding chambers with phosphex charges that we finally returned above ground, only to find that the surface war had gone against Solisiphon's militia, and the Khrave had torn through the Xth Legion detachment seconded to us, leaving only a handful of survivors in their wake. With no militia or allied Astartes support, the city had all but fallen. The directive of the Lords Martial changed from 'civilian defence' to 'area denial', which meant burning the settlement we had just fought to protect to the very ground and leaving the ashes and ruins to be scoured by our Destroyer cadres, denying the Khrave a strongpoint against our inevitable counterattack.

But something about Solisiphon was different. I wasn't privy to the finer points of strategic necessity that required Solisiphon be held, but apparently our own officers in the XIIIth were. The word came down from Chapter Command that Solisiphon was opportunis maxima, strategic value: absolute. The Khrave already had the city and were butchering the civilian population to the last man, woman and child, and the Iron Hands had been driven back to the city's starport and were executing their own withdrawal via Thunderhawk to the orbital muster point. An operation within the city boundaries would not be a defensive action. It would be a march into a zone mortalis with little to no chance of survival, and laughable odds of retaking the city.

That's when I first became aware of Seventh Chapter's dirty secret. We all knew that our Chapter had a higher than average proportion of censuria, battle-brothers marked for censure for infractions, excesses or simply failing to conform with Legion protocol when it counted. Many of the censured were segregated from their battle-brothers and removed from line operations until they had completed penance. What we didn't know - until Solisiphon - is that a significant portion of the worst offenders were permanently reassigned to a unit within Seventy-Ninth Company which was reserved for exactly the kind of operation that Solisiphon had now become.

They first showed themselves the next morning. As I was executing morning firing rites along with company reserve, a column of Rhinos and Spartans, hulls blackened, roared past our position at full speed towards Solisiphon's walls. For a second I thought they were Iron Hands, their hulls were so darkened, but when I saw XIII Legion livery upon their chassis many of us ceased in the midst of rites, noticing something was amiss. In a matter of moments they were gone again, the smoke of Solisiphon's burning habs obscuring the armoured column.

I don't know much about the fight that happened inside Solisiphon. I'm told that a hundred warriors were embarked upon those transports, but when I saw the survivors march from the walls hours later I counted barely thirty. Of those, I would later learn, were the warriors of Pankrator, the squad I would be press-ganged into for infractions I still feel shame to speak of. Their pauldrons were blackened as if in mourning, and the man who led them - whose name I did not then know - bore armour black as jet, the proud ultima of Macragge all that marked them as brother Ultramarines. So it was from this habit of blackening their wargear that we gave the warriors who retook Solisiphon the cognomen of the Black One Hundred. Ironic, in its own way, that barely thirty of them survived what I'm told was their first engagement as a distinct force, to receive the name of the Hundred. But bittersweet, too. Their first deployment saw the names of seventy of the Black Hundred's battle-brothers returned to the rolls of honour, their infractions erased by their deeds, but at the cost of their lives. I wasn't aware, then, that Chapter Command intended that the Black One Hundred would have been disbanded after Solisiphon and its members granted readmission to their former units.

But of course, that was before Calth. Before we realised that the war we'd fought on the Eastern Fringe was not the war we should have fought, not where we were needed most. Before I joined the Black One Hundred myself and learned that there are some crimes that cannot be repented.
