Very fine job..... love the metallic look:tu: Thanks for sharing your work with us.

Thanks mate, I’ll try and keep sharing! It serves as a good reminder to me as to what has been competed. Hopefully it’s entertaining to watch!

Well done.

Thanks Bjorn!

Yours is looking amazing cadmus! The paint job is great and the weathering tops it off. I love both your and kizz’s but I like how you used silver for his trim.

I find that it divides up the plates more and makes the scales bits of armor stand out more.

Thanks for the encouragement Hushrong.

Fantastic work on Alpharius! He turned out really really nicely :tu:

Thanks Kizz, I tried to replicate the hydra decal on the cloak, you are a very patient man! Looking forward to seeing your version, he is arelady looking insanely awesome.

Thanks for the view/likes/comments everyone. Onto the next project!

Evening all,

Onwards and upwards! I’ve started work on my next project, an assault squad for the XXth. Originally I was looking at the MKV assault squad but the cost is a little prohibitive, but also I was a little concerned about scale and aesthetics alongside a mainly plastic mkIV force.

I managed to get hold of some jump packs, so I’ve decided to try my hand at getting some more dynamic poses from the MIV plastic kit.

The squad will fulfil the third troops choice for the “coils of the hydra” right of war. Their mobility will come in handy for deploying alpharius and with melta bombs and combat shields they will go vehicle hunting. I love the fact these guys could take on a leviathan!

Here’s the first five:

Sorry for all the images, I just wanted to show them off at their best angles, something the group shot doesn’t do justic to!

C and C welcome

They look awesome! I also love those shield. Did you make those or buy them? Interested in seeing how these badasses shape up.

Thanks, I bought shields, they are the spartan shields from anvil industry. Really nice clean sculpt. Originally I was intending on casting a modified version of the standard space marine combat shield (from the older assault squad kit). Just couldn’t get the cast perfect enough. These shields are a little larger but add more of a heroic/ Grecian look which is growing on me. I was considering calling the squad the Myrmidons but it seems a little too un-original.

The models are well-assembled and posed. I hope to see them painted soon.

Cheers, yes I’m itching to get the airbrush out! The plan is to paint the right pads white to use up some of those green decals on the alpha legion sheet.

Really nice posing on the assault squad, particularly the charging chap on the far right of the group shot. The angles are all just right to convey the mommentum and movement of his charge.

The shields are certainly a nice touch.

Thanks Pearson, that chap is one of my favourite poses.

Next five should be done later today hopefully

Thanks for looking

I think those rounded shields look a lot better for this unit than most of what GW or FW offer. They do not look too bulky like the breacher or boarding shields from FW and not over done with decora like the shields from vanguard units or assault terminators.

These look just about right for assault marines of the XX.

I really think myrmidons would be a sweet name for Alpha Legion Breachers.

Evening,

The final five assault marines are complete:

Squad Sergeant:

The full 10 man squad:

Thinking of calling them “Squad Mycenae“, I believe the Mycenaean people were established by Perseus, who slew the Gorgon Medusa. Fitting that the squad will be regularly facing the Iron Xth, they may get to slay a Gorgon or two...

Alpharius looks great mate, I quite like the spartan style shields on the assault marines too been tempted by that myself for a while now and seeing yours has pretty much made the decision. Cracking work as usual.

Cheers Trixie, the shields are great sculpts, I’ll look forward to seeing your version!

I haven't comented here in a while but it's always great to see one of your updates. The Assault Squad is looking terrific. Where did you get those shields from? I also like the mix of poses you've achieved with this unit. Great stuff! :tu:

Thanks Dos, appreciate the post. The shields are the spartan shields from from Anvil Industry. Highly recommended.

Squad Mycenae sounds good and with their background highly appropriate. The whole squad looks great!

Cheers, I’ll work on the fluff, perhaps something about hunting a Glaive....

Some progress, base colours done, I’m keeping the right pads white:

I stumbled upon your thread only a couple of hours ago, and I can already say that this is probably one of my favourite ones on the whole forum! All that eye candy! Really can't decide wether I enjoy the looks of your Alpha Legion or Iron Hands more. Can't wait to see those assault marines finished in all of their 20th legion glory!

Well, this thread has been neglected for far too long! It’s been a busy summer with hobby projects on slow burn.

That metallic blue's looking great, as per. The white and green pad design is really striking.

Cheers Pearson, I’ve taken the blue a little further this time by applying an AK blue grey enamel filter. It’s a pretty subtle but I think it gives the colour a little more depth.

They look ace in the blue! The shields are really something.

Thanks Charlo, I see you are contemplating doing the XXth legion, welcome to the dark side? Or should that be the winning side

These guys make up the third troops choice for my coils of the hydra list. I’m generally finding you need at least three troops choices at 3000pts, so the rite of war is not as limiting as it would first appear.

I took the squad to a local tournament in early August, I deployed them poorly but managed to get four into base contact with my opponents fellblade. They brought it down to a single hull point, but then proceeded to die to in fiery conflagration as my mates leviathan took the last hull point off. Don’t believe the naysayers, combat shields are cool and worthwhile! Meltabomb assault marines are now my favourite troops choice!

C&C welcome!

Thanks for all the support guys!

I think you've earned that sort of praise. Your paintjobs are super crisp, and the miniatures really look like the legions they're made to resemble! Your new assault squad confirms that - those shields work perfectly for the Alpha Legion! Excited to see what you're gonna come up with next!
