Night Lords Warband and Chaos Lost and the Damned

Is that a Power Flail he's armed with? He's definitely a heretic!

These are some left-over bits from the Khorne cultists- the big Dishonoured model you can either build with two sewn-on chainswords or a chain-cleaver and skull-flail.

Both look brutal and both I wanted to use.

He actually looks a bit like this guy:

(that was a test-run when I was trying out if monochrome with lots of gore would work)

So I realize I have not yet done a Night Lord Kill Team!

Well, yes, I have enough Chaos Marines and conversions to field a Kill Team, with most of the available options.

But I have so far not build a dedicated team.

So, here goes.

I have now used different bits from various kits to put together a Kill Team.

The kits used are the new Horus Heresy Mark VI Space Marines, the Mark III Kit, the Forgeworld resin kits for the Terror Squad as well as the Mark IV heads and the Mark II shoulder pads.

Why did I decide on such a hodgepodge of different types and marks?

Well for one "Rule of Cool".

The new Mark VI Night Lord heads are just terrible.

Plus I had some leftovers from the Mark III kit sitting around in my bits box.

And the Mark VI plastic marines just look amazing! I have just never been a big fan if the beaky helmets, iconic as they might be.

The in-universe reason why they look like this is also quite simple- my Warband are pirates, so they have just stolen anything they could get their hands on.

I also tried to tone down the Chaos quite a bit.

Why?

I have just finished the Fabius Bile trilogy, and there is this glorious scene where Fabius and his cronies openly visit an Imperial World. They make quite an effort of "dressing up" in imperial looking armor, without any Chaos symbols, acting as Loyalists.

And then there is the new Warhammer+ animation "Iron Within" with the Iron Warriors also toning down their chaos and on first glance are seen as loyalist angels and saviors.

So no, my Warband has NOT suddenly turned "good". No.

They are devious and revel in subterfuge and they will use any means to set an ambush.

So now they turn up in fancy dress, so on first glance at a distance they could be seen as loyalists.

Until they come closer.

But then it will be too late for the enemy.

They are ready to join the fight on board the Space Hulk, battling against loyal Imperial Kill Teams and Aliens, eager to claim valuable loot.

Here they are.

I tried to get most of the Kill Team options in (except for the Balefire Acolyte and the Anointed, since I felt they were not fitting for a low Chaos team).

But I got bolter and melee warrior operatives, a plasma gunner, a heavy bolter, an icon, a communication specialist (if that ever becomes an option), a butcher (chain-glaive), a Shrivetalon (with two chainaxes and bare arms) and two potential leaders- the power fist / claw and plasma pistol option from the Mark VI box as well as the converted Primaris with the chain cleaver and the skull maul.

I can use these as legal squad in normal games of 40k, too. Bonus. Well, at least if I do some counts-as with the chain-glaive acting as double-handed axe and the lightning claw as cursed weapon (honestly, who ever thought about having lightning claws (!!!) removed as an option for Night Lords (!!!) in the new Codex should be made accountable to Sevatar!)

Of course I do not know how effective and competitive they will be, but I think they look pretty cool as they are.

And the background I made up for them fits really well with my Warband and the models.

Bolter, heavy bolter and champion:

Icon, chainsword and pistol and plasma gun:

And then I also ordered another piece of 3D printed terrain- this time a wrecked Dreadnought.

For use as normal terrain, but also as marker for if one of my dreadnoughts is wrecked in game.

I spiced it up a bit more with sand and a few skulls.

I like the 'turning to Chaos' look. Your beakie has some funky knee pads like one of the original metal marines. Where is that from?

I'm getting my first taste (pardon the pun) of the Night Lords in The Wolftime just now.

I like the ruined Dread too. I find it odd, watching battle reports and seeing vehicles removed from play when destroyed. In my head, their blazing hulks would form cover / impediments to advances. But hey, no vehicles in Kill Team!

The beaky marine is the anniversary special model that came out years ago.

It is styled after the very first space marine.

The model is OOP now but I saw them painted up at Warhammer World and thought I need to paint one up for my Night Lords.

I just tried something different with these, not covering them in skin trophies like the rest of the army.

Black Library is a great source of ideas.

I had fallen in love with the Night Lords books, and this is the reason I actually started this army. And this army is a gift that keeps giving- I can try out so many things and do all these conversions and add all these different models- just because they are so versatile. They are nearly like Orks where you can go to town with vehicle conversions.

How are these new Dawn of Fire books?

I am VERY far behind with my reading and have quite a backlog. I have to be in the mood for reading 40k novels. I have not even bought any of the Dawn of Fire novels yet, since I still have a lot of Heresy to catch up on plus several newer 40k books (I have just realized there is a new Gaunts Ghosts novella and I love Peter Fehervari so I look forward to "The Reverie").

Well, back in the day when I was in my gaming group (sadly now moved away and have not found / created a new group) as well as when I played tournaments, it was a requirement one brought along "craters" or at least crater markers for destroyed vehicles. I have not played in a while, so I just assumed that was still a thing.... if not, then it very well should be a thing because it makes sense from a narrative point of view.

That is a great beakie! It deserves a place with your Lords. I really like the idea of the Chaos marines having old and mixed armour patterns which are quite recognisable.

As for the DoF books, I have been listening to them rather than reading. They haven't engaged me in the way of the early Heresy novels (which I read) but that may be the delivery system. A fun way to get up to speed with the introduction of the Primaris but nothing that made me go 'wow'.

I have circa 30 years of catching up to do, my reference point was Ian Watson (though I preferred The Jonah Kit to his GW work)!

Looking forward to seeing some paint on your piratical kill team!

Oh awesome!

I love Ian Watson's books.

His Inquisition series was amazing and I also really like Space Marine.

I am actually a bit sad that they have toned down 40k a lot. Reading Space Marine and the whole scene where they eat the brains of a Titan crew was in the same part gruesome as well as awesome. This drove home the point how the Omophagea works. Ritualized CANNIBALISM to gain tactical intelligence.

One thing for sure- My Night Lords are DEFINITELY using it.

And I finished my Forgefiend.

He was quite fun to paint.

And for April, I am planning to paint of a few characters for this army- I have been itching for these guys for a while now:

Today was a fine day for sitting outside in the sun and getting some paining finished.

I finished some bloodthirsty villains (champions, aspiring champions, ...) for my sadistic space pirates.

Despite my limited painting abilities, I think they turned out alright.

They were a joy and very satisfying to paint. So much detail!

I think I actually like the villain who stole Sicarius' old armor best- he looks as if he has way too much fun at what he does.

I also transformed Sicarius' scrolls and purity seals into bloody shreds of flayed skin.

Right.

Long time no see.

I do have a couple of outdoor hobbies during summer, so less time for painting (plus my ADHD has been playing up as well).

This is why I am always pretty quiet during summer.

Anyways, have been to the local Warhammer store and got myself a Deimos Rhino as transport for my Terror Squad / Kill Team.

Got one of the free store minis to be chained to the front of the Rhino, too!

I think the tank came out well, thanks to some musical motivation by Alestorm and Powerwolf that kept me focussed.

Now I have to find the motivation to paint some more infantry and this Rhino.

And here is the Rhino with the squad:

I might as well pledge the Khorne cultists over at the "Call to Arms" so I have at least some motivation to get started again with something.

Love the termie squad and armour thief.

But...erm...dunno if you've noticed but your rhino's rear hatch is on backwards...

Oh bugger.

THAT is why it did not close to well.....

Ah well, stuck in place now, I just hope if people do not look too closely nobody will notice.

And if the do...

THE WARP DID IT!

Well, since I am stuck at home with COVID, I got at least some painting done.

I just finished the Rhino (which is stuck with the assembly mistake....) as well as the Leviathan.

I think they came out well- I wanted them to look as if they are stuck in the middle of it, in a battle field full of smoke and confusion.

I think for the month of November I REALLY should get stuck into my army of cultists.

They look good. I remember a short story in White Dwarf where the Night Lords had strapped Ultramarine victims onto the front of the Rhinos, so this fits right in

Sorry to hear that Nurgle has got you, although you seem to be making good use of it
