So the base point of this challenge is to complete 1 model a month, correct? Awesome. Even with the end of January fast approaching, I think I can do that. I just need to get some paints, and possibly brushes, and I can get something done up. One quick question: Do I need to vow for every month that I want to participate in up front, or can I vow for Jan through March, and then In March continue vowing?

One model per month and the vows just get made monthly bud. You can dip in and out as desired. Some of use have made a plodding along vow for the year. Usually either a large mini or big group.

Firstly, welcome to the Challenge :tu:

 

There's two ways to pledge, firstly, is at least one model per month, vowing every month. The second would be to make a Plodding Along vow ( a maximum of 2 for the year, Jan-Jun and Jul-Dec), and make sure to post at least 1 model completed each month.

Plodding Along Vow

I, Jolemai , embark on the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge, and for the entirety of 2021 pledge to complete 28 Necromunda models by year's end.

I did it! Bear in mind, I'm not a great painter. I had a simple model, so I tried to put as much time is I could into shading and highlighting, which I normally don't. Compared to some of the amazing work I see here, I'm weak, but it's a starting point, and the challenge is complete!

 

 

The highlight on his hands is really light- the silver rings are hard to see. The eyes are a little messy too- but what you're seeing is after a few clean up attempts, then repaint, then cleaned up... At some point you just have to say, "That might be the best I can do for now."

 

The base is very basic. I may at detail to it as the Jokaero earns battle honours.

I realized middle of last week that I was not going to get as many sisters done this month as I had hoped, so focused on five that are now done. Paint is still drying, will try and get a picture in a bit or tomorrow when it is light again.

Me wittering on about lore:

So when Grotsmasha chose the Sythes of the Emperor, all I knew about them was that they had suffered mightily at the hands of the tyranids, so it was fun to find out about their founding, their relationship with Sotha and the Pharos, and their later suffering at the hands of the tyranids alongside the Lamenters. The cheques on the shield are a kind of nod to the Lamenters here, maybe this marine earned his campaign badge next to them. I discovered that by the end of these wars, the Sythes were left with just three suits of terminator armour. Could this be just one of those veterans, sent back into space hulks to hunt down the vanguard of the next hive fleet?

Me wittering about painting:

So when Grotsmasha chose the Sythes of the Emperor, all I knew about their appearance was a hazy memory of a scout in the art of Advanced Space Crusade (which was black and white). So I had no idea of the colour scheme, and was a bit worried about yellow. I only asked for the randomizer because I had rejected Imperial Fist! In the end the yellow was not so bad, but the highlights have been completely lost under the glaze of yellow ink.

This model gave me many other challenges. I think some chemical from the stripping may have been left, because paint keeps flaking off like mad. And the lugs were missing so pinning the arms was a pain. And I lost the first shield (luckily the ebay bundle came with two). And then I realise I had to freehand the chapter symbol - I've never done that before, but tried to copy @The Sythe's guide on this forum. By that stage I was too weak to do it in yellow (despite their encouragement) so I did it in white - I rationalise it's ok for the first company to swap to white as a nod to the codex company colour.

@Jolemai - what memories that brings back!

@ThePenitentOne - great completion. I know how you feel on the cycle of touch-ups!

@Iokkerex - superb conversions. A massive improvement on the 'official' models, can't wait to see how they turn out.

January Summary

Welcome everyone to the first Summary of 2021, and what a great start to the year We've had 39 Frater sign up to the Challenge, many returning for a second, or even third year. Together we pledged 301 models for the month, with 35 Frater managing to complete their vows and 268 models, leaving four Frater to earn the Next Month Badge, and their first shot at the Stubborn Badge.

Just a quick note of something I forget to stress every year, particularly helpful to newcomers in regards to Completions,

A Completion is one single model per month, regardless of what you have vowed to complete. If you pledge a squad of Guardsmen, posting a picture of a single one of them completed will secure the Completion for the month, which will also open up the Stubborn Badge for future months.

So if you're running out of time, focus on a single model, and secure that Completion.

I have streamlined awarding the Badges a little compared to previous years, and have begun adding Badges in the first post of each Month as they are earned. Please feel free to add them to your Signatures as you see them appear each month.
