Rusted Boltgun
I know I said intermission but.... these intercessors and one more Bladeguard will take me to my Boarding Patrol of 500 points. To get to 1k I'll need 1x Impulsor (part built) 1x Stormspeeder Thunderstrike 1x Ballistus Dreadnought (not far off completion) Could I have a Space Marine army fully painted in time for my 50th in September?! Rusted Boltgun
End of intermission. Intercessors and Bladeguard have some base colours on them. Intercessors are ready for washing, a few more colours to go in the Bladeguard. Rusted Boltgun
I'm meant to have been painting but I got distracted (again, Boltgun, can't you ever just finish anything?!) with magnetising some Inceptors and an Impulsor firestorm40k and Tallarn Commander 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/13/#findComment-6110019 Share on other sites
Rusted Boltgun
So I have... Intercessors to finish Bladeguard to finish Ballistus Dread to finish Inceptors to finish building Impulsor to finish building Stormspeeder to build That would take me to 1k of Astartes. The remaining 1k is unbuilt in the loft. Well, apart from the bikes...<sigh> Then there are... A few Von Ryan's Leapers to paint Some Orks for the Call to Arms The last two Kill Team boxes and all of Hivestorm apart from the Vespids And I picked up a couple of resin HH Praetors because I love the models and really want to scratch the HH itch I've had for ages. That should easily see me into 2026 so I really ought not to buy anything else. <Cough> Typhon <cough> Edited May 15 by Rusted Boltgun I keep forgetting those Inceptors firestorm40k 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/13/#findComment-6110021 Share on other sites

Rusted Boltgun
Progress with the Intercessors, the Bladeguard and the Ballistus. The Intercessors need the second layer on the green and highlights to the leather and the lighter colour in the base (and a steel legion drab rim). Bladeguard need some more basecoats before a wash. Ballistus needs second red layer, tidying up the weapons and then finishing off some smaller details. Rusted Boltgun
Progress continues. Intercessor Sergeant gains a head (green stuff goggles!) and the beginning of a plasma effect. Bladeguard have been washed and partially assembled ready for re-establishment of reds and greens (cloth needs a red wash first). Rusted Boltgun
I heard a call...a Call to Arms! Everything goes on the bench while I attempt to complete a vow for this year's Call to Arms. My Astartes need an opponent so it is time to bolster the Ork ranks with some Goff footsloggers - A Warboss and 20 Boyz. firestorm40k, ZeroWolf and Firedrake Cordova 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/13/#findComment-6116626 Share on other sites

Rusted Boltgun
Squad One has basecoats of Heavy Metal, Balthazar Gold, Corvus Black and Skavenblight Dinge applied. Next step will be a wash of Agrax. Firedrake Cordova
It's one of the greys, although it looks like it might have a bit of brown in it, so it's not entirely "neutral"? Rusted Boltgun
I started by following an old Duncan Rhodes guide for painting Goffs but deviated slightly with the AP Heavy Metal instead of Leadbelcher. I don't appear to have Mournfang Brown in my stash and my go-to VGC Beasty Brown was too bright against the black so I went with Rhinos Hide. Skavenblight Dinge is the first highlight over Abaddon Black for Citadel's Dirty Black recipe and would be highlighted with Stormvermin Fur. I use the recipe for leather on my Astartes. Duncan's Goff method has an Agrax Earthshade wash as the next stage with a highlight of Karak Stone. Rusted Boltgun
My fantastic (for me) progress has been halted by a change of plans IRL for the next couple of days. I had managed to get all the basecoats (except skin) down on all the minis, shade them with Agrax and add the texture paint to all the bases. Phew! I've decided my skin tones will be my Monument Hobbies yellow green triad (dark y/g, y/g, bright y/g) but will have to wait until I get an opportunity to put paint to plastic again. I was really happy with the Agrax over the Heavy Metal and overally very pleased with the progress so far. My two squads will need differentiating on the tabletop so I'm thinking the squad with the modern Nob will be da Red Gunz, the one with the older (and smaller) Nob will be da Checka Boyz. Let's see how that goes... The Warboss is un-named at present. Will get my thinking cap on. Oh, how I know this feeling! The upside is that you might enjoy painting while you finally get around to doing that. If this is how you painted the almost copper-like metallic (barrels, nozzles), the result is very nice. If you used different paints then I can only say that these parts turned out great either way. My memory of Ork lore is a bit rusty so I don't remember how they organise but I suppose that painting different squads with different colours/accents/patterns is a great way to add variety and make the process even more enjoyable. Given my 40k purchasing plans, I kind of wish the new edition starter had some Orkz in it - that's my unfulfilled wish, to paint some green silly brutes. Rusted Boltgun
That copper colour is Balthazar Gold @Brother Christopher. The Heavy Metal is an Army Painter gunmetal from the Blanche setts they brought out. Significantly nicer to use than the VGC gunmetal I persist in using on my Marines. It is darker, perhaps closer to Iron Warriors? With these Ork Boyz I essentially have two squads of identical models so want to try and differentiate them where I can - it feels a bit more Orky - but without conversions otherwise it will be ages before I get them done. I'm aiming to have a game with my son so they need to be separate squads on the tabletop and easily moved as such, even if deployed in one big blob.(Deployed? Ha! When will I ever play this game?!) I think back to my first ever box of plastic Marines as a kid - one squad got a yellow circle on their leg as a campaign badge, the other a red stripe. I find it fun to think of fluffy 'reasons' for these things. Especially when I am sitting at a desk wishing I could be painting, trying not to buy more models. I'm hope you get to paint some Orks. They are such fun, some of the minis are really great and there is real freedom to paint them whatever way you like. Your Templars need their traditional enemy... Rusted Boltgun
A little more Orky progress... They all have a base coat of XV-88 on the base for my standard Octarius scheme. I've started the skin, basing with Pro Acrylic Yellow Green. Two thin coats obvs. I'm quite pleased so far, they look proper Goffy without actually having a huge amount of proper black on them. That Duncan Rhodes would appear to know a bit about painting! Very orkish but not bright. Looks solid I'll try my best! Forgive me if you're already familiar with Duncan Rhodes, if so then skip to the last paragraph. Duncan Rhodes is an ex-GW staff painter who used to present their YouTube painting tutorials. He used to say in each video about applying basecoats in 'two thin coats", to the point where it became his catchphrase. When he left GW, he created his own paint range and named it...Two Thin Coats. He also has the Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy and still puts videos on YouTube. I have found them invaluable since I started painting and finding him relaxing to watch. The Ork skin in my last photo above is a bit patchy - it has only had one thin coat so far. The joke is on me, really. I shouldn't find it surprising that a renowned painter such as Duncan can put together a decent paint scheme method of application - he's got far more talent than I! kabaakaba
Oh, lol, newer know that joke about it... And two thin coat is like a mantra for me... I use two thin coat virtually all the time. Also about orks skin. Do you plan to dry brush it or use layering? I ask cause the last time I paint orks it was 98? Or near that year) and have no options to paint flesh cause IG mostly clothed. Rusted Boltgun
Good question about the next step, I'm going to experiment a little. I have decided on a contrast wash - some thinned green contrast to see if I can get some natural looking shadows. I wasn't that happy with the layering I had attempted on my Deffkopta pilots (no photos I'm this thread, I have realised) so had been thinking about a drybrush for the highlight. I might even try doing the highlight first and then the use wash to tone it down. Rusted Boltgun
Progress is being made with my Orks. All the basecoating of the skin has been completed. Final assembly is being attempted but some teeth are going to need painting before they get partially obscured and I can't get a brush to them. I'm finding it hard to photograph these guys with so much bright sunlight. Rusted Boltgun
Small update. Junior Boltgun wanted to do some painting last night so I managed to overcome Ork fatigue to paint the eyes and teeth of one squad. Tried the ivory colour from the AP Blanche set but it was too pale for the teeth so switched to Wraithbone. Despite needing new glasses I made few mistakes - all this painting must be improving my brush control a bit. Pics will follow.
