Got some skin colour on the Mek.

I didn't refer back to precious posts so adding ProAcryl Yellow Green took it way too far away from the base colour and I had to fudge it with some dark yellow green to try and make it look a bit more natural.

Got the lid on the Whirlwind and started playing with some grey.

Also got the heads on the Inceptors so time to get them properly glued up, re-establish their base coats and then get on with finishing them off.

Great work, @Rusted Boltgun! The whirlwind is coming up really nice! Love the towline - I always loved when people added a bit of realism in their 40k kits - and it's the reason why I cut the smoke launchers in half and stick them on turrets of my tanks like you see in real tanks, i.e., turret mounted, angular spread and to look like arrays.

I will just echo what others have posted - the ork's skin is great and the tow line is a great addition. It brings back to my mind the fond memories of browsing the How To Paint Space Marines (2004) book and searching for inspiration. I've never gotten around to doing anything like this (i.e. custom tow lines, antena), though.

I will also remark that this pattern of the missile launcher is great. I am vaguely aware of its existence, but it's not the default for a Whirlwind in my mind and seeing it in the wild always catches me off-guard and makes me go "oh, yeah - that's great."

Thank you @Brother Christopher, that Whirlwind is a Horus Heresy Deimos Whirlwind - the missile launcher is closest to the kitbashed one from the White Dwarf I remember from my early days in the hobby. When I saw it released, it immediately went on my 'must buy' list. I maybe should have made it with the standard Rhino flat front as I prefer that look.

I can see the appeal of making the tanks more 'scale' and it really didn't take long to do the tow line. It has encouraged me to think about adding things to other models.

You absolutely should! You might want to experiment with wire of different gauges too, you'd be surprised what you can do with the stuff. I once managed to make hair braids for one of my marines using twisted .04 gauge wire. Way easier than sculpting the stuff!

Progress with the Inceptors and Outriders

Second layer on the Inceptors required and then some decals. Really need some better light for the photos. I need to find my 40mm bases for them too!

And the Whirlwind is getting blacker

I've been making some more rubble too.

I want to have the 'rock' emerging from a mound but not quite sure how to do it. Maybe milliput?

Are you saying the "rock" is in the ground, and a bunch of rubble has covered it? If so, I think your best bet is to glue the rock on top to the proper height, then cover in more debris.

Ah, yes, not very well explained. You're right, cover this massive to make a hillock and add some more 'rocks' as rubble on the top would be a good plan.

Yeah, just keep in mind, you may need to add a bit to underneath the straight leg. Loose rubble tends to pile up in a wide gentle gradient. If you make the incline of the rubble pile too steep, it wont look right.
