It has been a little while since I updated my WIP. Since the last photo, the Dread has been primed and basecoats have (mostly) been applied.

It felt like a lot of green (as the torso and the arms are also mainly green) but was it was worth it to reach the point where I move on to the red.

Separately, I recently purchased a Tyranid Winged Prime and some warriors from eBay so I have primed the Prime. I'm going for the blue/black scheme I tried out on the VRL a few pages back.

I also had a bit of a tidy up and sort out. No photos as the shed is still a hideous mess. Good news - I found the Impulsor parts I had been missing for ages - they'd fallen down the back of a rack.

More good news - I found the box of Blanche Möderin I had put in the shed at the end of last year.

Not such good news - I haven't located the  Inceptors I need to complete my Combat Patrol. I reckon they are in the box with the aforementioned VRL test model so at least I know what I'm looking for.

I really need to sell some stuff so I can make some proper space in the shed for my minis!

Unfortunately, my other layering hasn't been so smooth @W.A.Rorie and I had to completely remove the paint from a panel on one of the shoulder pads and start again.

This did, however, provide the opportunity to prime 10 Hormagaunts and assemble a Parasite of Mortrex. Unfortunately, the PoM was incomplete - missing the lower jaw. I don't know if it came incomplete and I missed it or whether the piece is in the storage box. I had a couple of spare heads so I got the clippers and green stuff out

Not as creepy as the original but at least it will have a whole head!

And on the body

Perhaps I should have reshaped the whole of the front of the skull to make it one smooth area? Hmm.

That sucks.

I like the jaw and think it looks great.  No sure about the nose, though - maybe if you shape it into a beak, or extend the teeth up to have it be the upper part of the mouth?  At the moment its kind of weird combination of the two.

I agree with @Dr_Ruminahui - not that it's bad, but I think extending the beak/nose part will improve the mini's 'face.' Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Tyranid bits but is there anything that could work as a pair mandibles? (e.g. bits of talons or anything else that's spiky). You could attach them by filling in the empty space between the jaw and throat.

Regardless of these remarks, I think that what you have now works well enough, too.

The proper model actually has mandibles @Brother Christopher so good call. I could see whether any of the surplus spikes that appear around the Tyranid feet could be repurposed. Let's see how I get on with the beak first!

A little bit of progress with Fred today and here he is mocked up so far

I have magnetised his base along with the Winged Tyranid Prime, a Barbgaunt, a Warrior and 10 Hormagaunts.

The Warrior is being used as a test for my paint scheme so got a layer of Temple Guard Blue to start him off.

I received my Maelstrom: Lair of The Tyrant books today. First impressions - brilliant, love them. I'm sure there are flaws but I'm not experienced enough to detect them.

One question I'm left asking though, why on earth are they produced at the end of an edition? There is so much material here (and the other books recently released and to come) that surely mid-edition would make more sense?

Yeah it makes more sense. But would it make James $? Just sucks that new book is getting dropped with IW probably gonna be previewed Sunday with preorder Saturday then out in 2 weeks.

Fred the Dread is inching along. The shoulder pads are taking a lot of layers to get a decent red and I'm nearly there.

The Tyranid Warrior test model has three layers of blue.

And it's non-warrior brethren have all been primed and had their bases magnetised.

I know, I know. I still need to finish the bikes....

I am really looking forward to seeing what you will do with these tyranids!

And I also like Fred!

Weird, just today I was thinking that the GW red that I am using as a base of the red on my models took twice as many layers as the other paints...

(luckily, I am doing Night Lords, not Blood Angels....)

What is it with the red?

Are they using less pigment in them?

I had thinned my Mephiston Red on my wet palette so it went on nicely @Valkia the Bloody but I use German Grey or Black Vallejo brush on primer which definitely makes it harder for reds, yellows, etc. The blue basecoat on the Warrior took three layers!

I really ought to look at getting an airbrush for priming as when I tried it last, I was able to prime quite nicely in lighter colours.

I've (more than) enough models now for the Vardenghast Swarm Combat Patrol. Too many to pledge for a Call To Arms at my work rate but hopefully some will go towards it this year.

The Warrior has now had a Wraithbone dry brush and I'll attempt some contrasts tomorrow to see if I can nail down my scheme.

I really need to press on with Fred and get some washes on bit there are still some small details that need attention. It doesn't help that I have broken his power fist elbow joint again.

Magos Purple over the blue to go into the recesses, Volupus Pink on the weapon.

When I did the Von Ryan's Leaper, I did a Basilicanum Grey was over the plates and I'll be doing that again, I think.

I do need to get some Wraithbone / Volupus Pink into the soft joints but I wanted to get A bit of colour on the weapon to see whether it works.
