Rusted Boltgun
Got some skin colour on the Mek. I didn't refer back to precious posts so adding ProAcryl Yellow Green took it way too far away from the base colour and I had to fudge it with some dark yellow green to try and make it look a bit more natural. kabaakaba, Valkia the Bloody and WBRBloom 2 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/19/#findComment-6184843 Share on other sites
BadgersinHills
Very nice work. The skin looks amazing. Rusted Boltgun 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/19/#findComment-6184870 Share on other sites
Rusted Boltgun
Got the lid on the Whirlwind and started playing with some grey. Also got the heads on the Inceptors so time to get them properly glued up, re-establish their base coats and then get on with finishing them off. space wolf
Oooh that tow line looks great! The skin looks good too. My opinion ks ork skin can be as varied as human skin is. Rusted Boltgun
Thanks @space wolf, that Ork skin was very much a 'happy accident' I'll try to replicate with a Big Mek that is in the queue. I'm up to version 4 of the tow line as I wanted it a little shorter and more taut. space wolf 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/19/#findComment-6185232 Share on other sites
WBRBloom
Great work, @Rusted Boltgun! The whirlwind is coming up really nice! Love the towline - I always loved when people added a bit of realism in their 40k kits - and it's the reason why I cut the smoke launchers in half and stick them on turrets of my tanks like you see in real tanks, i.e., turret mounted, angular spread and to look like arrays. Brother Christopher
I will just echo what others have posted - the ork's skin is great and the tow line is a great addition. It brings back to my mind the fond memories of browsing the How To Paint Space Marines (2004) book and searching for inspiration. I've never gotten around to doing anything like this (i.e. custom tow lines, antena), though. I will also remark that this pattern of the missile launcher is great. I am vaguely aware of its existence, but it's not the default for a Whirlwind in my mind and seeing it in the wild always catches me off-guard and makes me go "oh, yeah - that's great." Rusted Boltgun
Thank you @Brother Christopher, that Whirlwind is a Horus Heresy Deimos Whirlwind - the missile launcher is closest to the kitbashed one from the White Dwarf I remember from my early days in the hobby. When I saw it released, it immediately went on my 'must buy' list. I maybe should have made it with the standard Rhino flat front as I prefer that look. I can see the appeal of making the tanks more 'scale' and it really didn't take long to do the tow line. It has encouraged me to think about adding things to other models. You might want to experiment with wire of different gauges too, you'd be surprised what you can do with the stuff. I once managed to make hair braids for one of my marines using twisted .04 gauge wire. Way easier than sculpting the stuff! Rusted Boltgun
Progress with the Inceptors and Outriders Second layer on the Inceptors required and then some decals. Really need some better light for the photos. I need to find my 40mm bases for them too! Rusted Boltgun
I've been making some more rubble too. I want to have the 'rock' emerging from a mound but not quite sure how to do it. Maybe milliput? space wolf
Are you saying the "rock" is in the ground, and a bunch of rubble has covered it? If so, I think your best bet is to glue the rock on top to the proper height, then cover in more debris. You're right, cover this massive to make a hillock and add some more 'rocks' as rubble on the top would be a good plan. space wolf
Yeah, just keep in mind, you may need to add a bit to underneath the straight leg. Loose rubble tends to pile up in a wide gentle gradient. If you make the incline of the rubble pile too steep, it wont look right. Rusted Boltgun
I started the Red Terror with the intention of following a painting guide I had seen on YouTube from The Painting Coach. It started with Rhinos Hide, drybrushed Gal Vorbak Red on the skeleton and Khorne Red on the plates. The Khorne Red was then Shaded with Nuln oil and built up again with Khorne Red. So far so good. Except that the skeletal areas began to read more brown than red to my eyes. The next step for the skeleton was to highlight with Khorne Red which, I guess would allow the shadows to deepen. I couldn't leave it though and gave anything GV Red a shade of Carrosburg Crimson, including the tail. Now the Red Terror is looking like it will earn it's name. Though I'm now considering a Nuln Oil recess shade on the skeleton to add some depth. And from one of my biggest models to some of my smallest. Starting Orktober early. I'm going to order some new brushes as I've worn down my nice size 0 and 1 and these guys deserve some care and attention. My Whirlwind is on hold for now. Deliberating whether to try some m atte varnish to see if it removes the visible brush strokes or try some of this new Tone Pro for the self levelling properties. space wolf and Valkia the Bloody 1 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/19/#findComment-6189064 Share on other sites
Rusted Boltgun
Starting to push the red with some Wazdakka It was looking quite bright when it went on but was somewhat more subtle after it had dried Another pass is in order. I have been deliberating over the colour of the plates in the tail. They appear under / through the skin of the tail so should they be the same colour as the armour plates even if they have a different function? Does it matter given the 'skin' of the tail is similar to the skeleton? I had been toying with the idea of having them black but I'm pleased with the red so may just carry it through. space wolf
You may want to consider pro-acryl's Bold Pyrole Red. It is a VERY bright red! Rusted Boltgun
It is tricky, the photos come out darker than when in the room. I would benefit from a better photo set up. And I think my ancient work iPhone is better at photos than this Pixel 6a. But way trickier to get photos off. I want my Red Terror to be red but I don't want it to be the Mephiston / Evil Sunz Scarlet of my FoL so I'll probably keep going in this direction and up the amount of Wazdakka. The guide had the final highlight as Squig Orange. We'll see whether I can dare to go that far. Some work on the claws will dial down the amount of brown too. space wolf 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/374110-rusted-boltguns-wip/page/19/#findComment-6189107 Share on other sites
