[DW] The Desolation of Innocence (RPG IC Thread)

@Lysimachus/Philemon, yes you should roll all damage individually against targets, the same as you would with a SAB/FAB, this simulates where and how you catch them, the consistency of the flame at any one given time, yadda yadda.  Don't worry about it for now.

The cover provided to the Hybrid assailants is their undoing against such a torrent of holy flame.  Thus called forth the heat turns their shelter into an oven, providing no chance for them to escape the purgation of heat.  Philemon's words beget his acts, and those are utterly deadly.

The screams of the alien victims are all-too human, except around the edges, where a resonance hums, along with the stench of alien ichor and chitin turned to liquid.

Hybrids 5 and 6 are reduced to molten slurry.

After the near disaster that was the crossing to the Hulk now they were stranded in its bowls, off target but alive. A state that could not be said of the Hulks denizen. Three perished in the opening moments and he was not far behind, wounding another moments before the mutant was trampled underfoot.

Hybrid 4:

The Hybrid is faster than their fellow kin, dodging first one way, then another, but underestimates the wrath of a double-barrelled boltgun. It catches the second shell full on in the chest, the creature is bowled over, chest blown into red ruin, but lies in a pool of rapidly spreading purple-red ichor slick, panting sharply, trying to stay alive whilst staring hatred at the White Wolf, slithering tongue snaking back and forth through both needle and human teeth.

Hybrid 4 is reduced to 3 Wounds, and is prone.

Hybrid 1:

Seeing the fate of his brothers and sisters, takes discretion as the better part of valour, and leaps for a hatch in the floor containing a ladder well. It lingers a moment to fire an Autopistol at Philemon.

The enemies scurried with unnatural quickness as death rained upon them, able to squeeze into gaps not easily followed by the bulk of the astartes armour they posed no real threat in direct combat but might move to call reinforcements or seal bulkheads if not dispatched quickly.

He maintained his charge as he thundered into the chamber seeking to crush one cowering foe underfoot as he set his sights on another more distant, the flames and explosions barely worthy of notice. The mutant before him sought to flee as the Luthais' claws tore through the deckplate and carved his foe from what sanctuary it thought it had found.

Hybrid 4:

Like the vermin these miscreants represent, as the Storm Warden launches his charge, the yellow eyes go wide in fear and confusion as the Terminator Armoured Marine stomps down on it with a thundering crunch, ending it's pathetic life.

Hybrid 1:

The Hybrid screeches in terror as the monumental bulk of a Space Marine wrapped in the heaviest armour known to man sets into an unstoppable momentum.  Luthais smashes the alien monstrosity with such force, there is a sickening, crack as spine, chitin and even the deck metal warps against the run.

As Luthais comes to a halt, the hybrid slithers into the ladder-well in a sack of pulverised meat.

Both hybrids are eliminated by a mag-rail pain train.

One of the blasphemous wretches had the gall to hurl an explosive at Arcturion, but the device detonated ineffectually upon his thick war-plate and the librarian strode forth through the resulting cloud of debris and shrapnel undeterred. Streamers of smoke clung to his armor menacingly like the claws of a jealous lover, while a crackling nimbus of power began to shine forth from Doombringer's edge. Not slowing his stride, Arcturion leaned forward, accelerating his motion until he thudded forward with a powerful and inexorable gait. An unstoppable slab of muscle, ceramite and hatred bore down on the remaining hybrid xenos. Doom was at hand.

Forked electrostatic discharge licked its way up the length of his sword's blade as he brought the ancient weapon down in a terrible arc toward his hapless victim.

Hybrid 2:

The creature reels from the psychic feedback of so many death and so much agony at once.  Almost too late it lifts the stock of its autogun to ward off the blow coming.

That is the last mistake it makes as an avenging angel hurtles forward, a golden nimbus of flames coruscating from his helm and shoulders.

The mighty sword lifts, and descends once, bifurcating the unfortunate target into two lightning fried half carcasses.  For a moment the hybrid stand there, stupidly groping the two halves of the smashed rifle, before toppling down onto the console behind it.

Hybrid 2 is chopped suey.

The room is bathed in crimson lights.

It is then, thunderous engines begin to whine, gears begin to crunch.

The walls begin to get a little closer...

Spoiler

The large red block to the right of the map is a blast door.  It is meant to withstand the pressures inherent in crushing matter, the like of which can found all around you.

The console has retracted, but may still be accessed.  You will require 4 x Hard (-20) Tech Use Tests to stop the PULVERISER, failure by 4 or more DoF, fries the console.  Each Tech Use attempt will require a full action - note we are still in Structured Time, which means one attempt per turn.

Alternatively, you may attack the door.  It has AP 32 and 30 Structure points (Wounds).  Once breached, this will allow a big enough gap for ONE Terminator to escape the PULVERISER.  We are still in Structured Time.  You will have to clear the door one at a time, or put the door into critical wounds to allow two men abreast.

Alternatively, if you have a power source, you may attempt to force the door open by overriding the pistons.  This will require a Very Hard (-30) Toughness test.  Failure by 4 or more DoF will fry the circuits and lock the door.  It will take three turns to lift the door in this manner, needing a Toughness test for each attempt.

Finally, you may attempt to open the door via Psychic means.  The difficulty for this test will be Hard (-20).  This will take longer at four turns, requiring a Test per turn. Failure by 4 or more DoF will likely spawn a Daemon and being PULVERISED might not mean what you think it means, if it's a Slaaneshi type.

You may combine ANY of these actions. (Eg, you may lift the door one turn using power, then another turn  using psychic means)

The PULVERISER will PULVERISE you, and anything in that room until everything is PULVERISED.

The clock starts running at Round 2, you have FOUR TURNS to prevent being PULVERISED.

Questions in the OOC.

+ STRUCTURED TIME CONTINUES +

  • Korvaan
  • Philemon
  • Nergüi
  • Luthais
  • Arcturion

The Crunching sounds give way to the keening sounds of metal being ground into fragments, of armoured glass taking strain, before exploding into crystalline powder.  How much will it sound like the crystal in your own visors?  How much creaking will your plasteel and adamantium shells take before you are crushed as surely as those smote down by the righteous arms and armour you wield?

The tattered corpses stare at you with glassy malevolence - death has taken them aye, but they are witnesses to your peril, perhaps even your demise.

The walls continue their inexorable advance.....

Iron Father Korvaan had followed on behind Arcturion, however his assistance wasn't needed.

Thanks to the Omnissiah he'd focused on the console that the Hybrid was positioned over whilst the combat occurred. The Hybrid had been working on it when he had been disturbed by Arcturion, however Korvaan was just a bit too far away to see.

He had noticed a key bank and the console had retracted into the wall as the obvious Blast Door to the right of the chamber began to give off a loud screeching noise. Hooking up with the Auspex of squad members in the bigger chamber he could see that the Door was beginning to move forwards instead of up into the ceiling, it was obviously some sort of compactor judging by the piles of scrap that made up the walls.

Korvaan activated the systems of his Omnissian Power Axe and interfaced with the console controls.

Int 40 +10 (Talented Tech Use) +10 (Omnissian Power Axe) +20 (Exceptional Augur Array) -20 (Hard) = 60. Result: 09, Pass 5DoS

The console was an older type than he was used to but he managed to make headway. The lights on the console weren't flashing as much as they had been, but Korvaan surmised that it might be a protracted process.

Korvaan:

The console grants entry past the first layer of cybersecurity, when you are presented with the following:

//QUERY//BIOMETRIC DATA MISSING//ERROR-OP/OFFEND.+

You realise now, that this will take skill and concentration to crack, you will have to immerse yourself in the purity of the machine - only it can save you - obviously.

The spools of noospheric code open up, invisible to flesh eyes and mind, but a scion of Mars does not need the weak flesh to enforce his will.

Philemon frowned. Hopefully the Iron Father would succeed with techo-arcane skill. But just in case…

He lumbered forward, Vindicta Dei held wide and raised up over his shoulder. No subtlety required in his strike, just hate-driven, Terminator-enhanced strength. With a bellowed prayer, he swung the axe in a massive, glittering arc.

Korvaan:

Your wary eyes perceive the battle-scene.  It is a riot of half-baked and mangled flesh.  Three of the bodies are viable for searching - one has plummeted to...who knows where, and the others are useless, molten puddles.

You are tied into the noospheric relay, doing battle with a powerful mnemonic digi-spool seeking to unseat your grasp of the console's cogitation core.  You realise it will be up to the others to act on your behalf.

Philemon:

{The results speak for themselves).

There is no barrier to the Emperor's Will! Faith and sacrifice!  Those are the tools to win the day, surely!

The crunch and rustle as debris where pushed by the closing walls rose as an unwanted background hum. He possessed not the tools to assist their Brother-Sergeant in breaking the blast door directly, nor the Mars-sworn with the battle against a no doubt hostile machine demon.

Crouching down by the trampled remain of the mutant closest to him he examined the remains. He doubted there was anything of value, but there might yet be something to learn about these denizen.

"Permit me, brother, your blow gives opportunity". Luthais strides forward, the axe had dug deep but was ill suited to rend the doors apart.

Striking armoured gauntlets into the opening the axe blow had provided the Storm Warden braced himself and pulled, feet digging into the metal deck as if it were mud as he pulled upon the door leaving deep molten furrows across its surface.

Not much point really, but in the interest of amusing myself…

Following the lead of Luthais and Philemon before him, Arcturion turned away from the slaughtered xenos and lumbered over to the grinding obstruction which, by all appearances, threatened to crush them if they didn't act quickly. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Luthais, the librarian revved the engine in his chainfist and dug into the trash compactor wall, widening the rent created by the Storm Warden with guttural roar.

Full Action: All Out Attack vs the PULVERIZER

WS77 + 8 (Philemon) + 20 (AOA) = 105

All Out Attack: 1d100 12

12: hit (who cares about DoS?)

Chainfist damage: 2d10+15E, Pen 10, Tearing, Unwieldy

(I have appended my full weapon damage and the underlying maths to my character sheet for future reference)

2d10, 2d10 (Tearing + Flesh Render)

Chainfist Damage: 2#1d10 1 3

Regular damage: 1, 3

Tearing + Flesh Render: 2#1d10 6 1

Tearing (Flesh Render): 6, 1

3+6+15 = 24 damage, Pen 10

I believe I did this right, as the additional Flesh Render dice only acts as a further substitute for the original tearing dice, meaning only one of the d10s from the baseline chainfist damage roll will be replaced.

Not great returns from rolling 4d10, but that's just the luck of the Lamenters. ;)

Kill-Team Regent:

The chamber door gives way to your might, tearing asunder under axe, claw and cutting chain.  The way is open, and escape into the hulk is now possible.

Nergüi retrieves the bracelet from the corpse, turning the tarnished silverite over in his fingers.  In a small windowed clasp is a lock of hair, perhaps indicating this is a birth charm, or momento, but the hair appears free of any taint.  An heirloom, then?  With the exit cut open, it doesn't seem required now. It is up to you if you keep it, it was really only for this puzzle.

Korvaan is embroiled with the machine - the way now open, to tarry much longer would only serve to delay the mission and endanger yourself. You may disengage as a free action, this should help with any narrative you wish to post.

The walls continue to close in.

Time to go - the dark corridors beyond the PULVERISATIONER chamber are your only direction now - but your mission is only beginning...

With the scale of the map, a charge action will likely get everyone out, so I'm going to declare that has been done and on that bombshell...

+ STRUCTURED TIME ENDS +

+ NARRATIVE TIME BEGINS +

Please feel free to add any wrap-up posts you want.

Korvaan began to relax, he allowed himself to become one with the machine. Noospheric combat was a battle of wills there was no place for distractions, emotions were just that an imbalance of chemical cocktails to affect a physical form.

He looked through the machine he was interfacing with, he could see traces of its original construction and how it had came to its current form. He knew how Space Hulks formed, the part they were currently in had originally been a Titan Lander and the blast door that was now a crushing tool was just a blast door trying to close it was just that the room had turned ninety degrees.

Mentally he laughed, he knew the lies about the truth. Technology was wrapped in dogma and secrecy to preserve it from the uncountable superstitious masses. How Watch-Sergeant Philemon had laughed earlier when he had told him about the truth. It was why the Ecclesiarchy wouldn't grant Rosarius' to his chapter and that Iron Fathers had to construct their own. Korvaan wasn't lying when he'd addressed Nergui as Honoured Equal.

Normally he would have achieved such a state by use of holy oils, unguents, aromatic candles and incense to appease the Machine Spirits and show the mundanes that he was working with the machine. That was The Act, sure the aromatic candles help oneself to relax and enter Noospheric interface but they weren't strictly needed.

Int 40 +10 (Talented Tech Use) +10 (Omnissian Power Axe) +20 (Exceptional Augur Array) +8 (Lead By Example) -20 (Hard) = 68. Result: 54, (Lead By Example Re-Roll) 09, Pass 5DoS

Before fully going under Korvaan had espied the Biometric Interface, a circular indentation that would receive the Bracelet.

The locking mechanism manifested as number of multi-coloured cubes that had to be rotated into a correct order four times. Korvaan had already managed the first sequence, he was just completing the second sequence when an alarm sequence had flashed across the noosphere about a structural loss.

It was very easy for Korvaan to work out the cause of the alarm, the mundanes had breached the Blast Door. Utilising his Augur Array he was able to link up with the sensorium's of Killteam Regent and see the breach in the Blast Door. Korvaan used the alarm distraction of the console to safely disengage his Omnissian Power Axe and exit through the breach in the still moving Blast Door.

In his peripheral vision Nergüi saw the others making headway with the door. He could not see the Mars-sworn but the single word update, given without out context, no doubt meant he was occupied and needed them to infer meaning, that or the machine demons had addled his brain, a less good outcome and one Nergüi would not contemplate without firmer evidence.

Had the mutants worn bracelets? He did not recall any, but a security spirit bound in one might explain how the Hulks masters let its minions navigate and open looks. Inspecting the arms again he found nothing that could be interpret as a bracelet, but as he stood he spotted something almost buried in the rubbish and debris  not far from the body, perhaps flung free in the turmoil.

Leaning over he reached out and picked up the small chain, a clasp was attached and turning it over he could see a lock of hair inside, there was no machine interface that he could see, a keepsake of some sort and not a security device. Nevertheless this might have been what the other had meant for some reason beyond Nergüis understanding. However as he stood and turned the Mars-sworn had disengaged and was heading for the breach in the door that the others had already traversed.

Twice now the hulk had sapped his attention, such laps must not continue or they would proof deadly. He quickly hurried after them, pocketing the trinket without a second thought.

A crackle of static is banished across the squad vox as the distinct sound of squelch and amplitude are varied by the relays in your helms.

You have escaped into dark corridors, speckled here and there with fizzing, flashing lumen bulbs.  Power flows oddly here, but you do not detect anything else staring out of the dark, just the voice in your ears.

++Brot...Philemon, th... Sophis.  Res...pond.++

++Throne...praised, there...signal...all.  Massive....pow...-tuations, d...wi-... the hul-.  You...way...off target.  Prepare...inload...direct...++

The vox closes off abruptly, before the lights begin to dim along the corridor ahead.  Power ceases and the hum and creak of the vessel become eerily silent.

Snap. A lumen bulb pops.

The shadow advances up the corridor.

Snap. Another light is snuffed out.

The impenetrable blackness comes, it doesn't move, but gets nearer anyway.

Snap. The light dies

Again and again the darkness stomps forth, a terrible silence marked only in the passing of filaments showering into the abyssal dark.

Suddenly an oppressive presence is upon you, slithering over you like a cloak.  Flapping becomes fingers, tendrils, grasping and probing.

Your warplate recoils from penetrating blackness and your stablights are extinguished.  Augurs and Auspex report nothing around you, absolutely -

<Nothing>

It isn't a voice, not as you would understand it.

<Questions without words. Rooms without walls. Answers without form. The Light...the Light...>

<New...What comes here?>

The pressure moves from without to within, layering on top of you demanding something, anything.  Paralysing you until it is satisfied.

Each member of the team may make a Challenging (+0) Willpower test to resist the effects.

Arcturion's features twisted into a scowl under his blunt-nosed helm as the hall lights snuffed out, plunging the passage into impenetrable darkness. This was no ordinary phenomenon, irrespective of the hellish weirdness one could encounter aboard a space hulk. This was something worse by far. He gritted his teeth and attempted to shield his mind as the foreign consciousness flooded over him, threatening to overwhelm him entirely. Blackness enveloped his psyche as he fought back against the alien intrusion.

As the blackness enfolded him, Philemon stared into it without blinking, without fear. His faith was strong. His voice whispered into the dark, growing louder and louder until he was roaring defiance and contempt at whatever warp-filth it was that surrounded him.
