[DW] The Desolation of Innocence (RPG IC Thread)

Recommended Posts

Killteam Regent had thundered through the tight and switch-backed tunnels on their path to reach Rally Point Knight. The journey was a blur, a brief combat with a pack of Genestealers dispatched by Lustrais had caused the survivors to retreat away. Twisting, ducking and bursting through obstructions in the dark. Fleeting sounds showed on audio that this hulk was infested by rats, gretchin and other myriad vermin.

Eventually his suit diagnostic's had come to fruition, its machine spirit fully restored to eager belligerency. Forcing there way through a set of double doors which sealed behind them Killteam Regent emerged into a wide square chamber. Auspex showed that they had reached Knight, however they was no signs of Cordovan or their other brethren. The room was the site of a mighty firefight, spent bolts, autogun cartridges and Autocannon shells were scattered over the floor.

+++Brother-Captain. Are you receiving me? Please confirm your location.+++

When the Watch Commander replies, his speech is punctuated by the slam-blam percussion of a power-headed flail battering and exploding something with every grunt and strike.

+++Welcome Bro- Phil...on.  Secu- landing...-one.  Genestealers....-where, Sophis - Nav Points!+++

Then he is gone, obviously busy.

As if to emphasise the urgency and prophecy of Commander Cordovan's message, one of the beasts - a full grown Purestrain Genestealer activates one of the doors - and charges through at the White Wolf!

Claws and teeth batter the Chaplain with furious desperation.

Korvaan left Nergui to deal with his opponent. Four blips on his Augur Array signified more danger. They had it seemed followed Regent's trail.

Korvaan strode to the southern door, he ignited the welding torch built in to his Omnissian Power Axe and set about securing the door.

Nergüi appeared to have the measure of his foe, but the attack demonstrated the risk of encirclement should they remain here as more and more forces would gather for the moment to strike with overwhelming numbers.

Setting a defensive stance he advanced at a more measured pace, allowing the xenos behind the door to come onto his blades as he sought to open lines of fire for his battle brothers.

Genestealer 2 (PS):

Dodge: FAIL.

GS 2 is removed from play.

The aliens, obviously roused from a long slumber seem ponderous compared to the Astartes finest.  Luthais' flickering lightning claw completes shears the abomination lurking behind the door into smoking chunks, revealing another brute lumbering down the cramped hall.

At the same moment, Nergüi takes advantage of his warplate's enhanced manoeuvrability to dodge a blow.

Korvaan seals the door in hissing sparks and blinding plasma-torch heat.  The mechanism he implores clunks, then breaks, jamming so hard the gears and pistons within deform, bulking the barricade up in consequence.  Even so, the noise travels through the material, banging and screeching of alien chitin against honest plasteel.

As the Storm Warden stepped forward and opened the hatch, Philemon was already moving to stand guard at his shoulder. The portal slid back to reveal a shorter corridor with chambers branching off it… and more xenos. Luthais lashed out at the closest, but the Emperor's Blade found his eye drawn beyond to more scuttling creatures. He found himself grinning. The Assault Marine had helpfully left him plenty of room to fire and in such close confines, the purging flame of Torrens Ignis would be almost unavoidable.

Free Action: Sustain Lead by Example. (Don't forget your +8 to all Tests!)

Half: Move forward to stand immediately southwest of Luthais.

Half: Single shot: HF at GS3. No BS Test.
(Cleanse and Purify and Cleansing Flame mean all Ag rolls to avoid effects are at -20 and successful Tests must be rerolled).
Dam 1d10+12 +2(MC) +2(Mighty Shot)
GS3: 4+16 = 20 Dam at Pen6. No cover.

The wide end of the template should cover the next blip (in the 2nd open doorway to Philemon's left?) as well. You might disallow it as the target is behind the wall, but assuming the flames hit the closed door at the end and splash outwards to either side, I reckon they'd still catch it…? Up to you though, boss!

Genestealer 1 (PS):

Spoiler

Dodge: 71 LOLWUT.

The Chaplain's unbridled fury breaks the foul spawn who dares to strike him.  The White Wolf bites quickly and hard, caving the Stealer in with a dolorous blow with his Crozius.

Genestealer 1 is removed from play.

Genestealer 3 (PS):

Spoiler

Dodge: 39 PASS

Must Re-roll: 18 PASS

EDIT: Re-rolls as per OOC Thread:

D100: 23 PASS, 58 FAIL.

As the flame gouts down the corridor, one of the beasts realises its peril, as the fire comes to destroy it, the xenos filth contracts, before leaping up, clawing into the walls to escape the cleansing heat.

It only gets so far before Philemon's careful adjustment of his heavy weapon splashes the clinging promethium up the wall to catch the spawn.  There is no escape.

Genestealer  3 is removed from play.

Genestealer 4 (IS): (Unrevealed)

Whilst the vengeance is thwarted, it is not denied, the foul beast lurking in the adjacent room suddenly disappears from the auspex.

A moment later, there is a horrific boom, which blows panels and floor plates off.  Shrapnel erupts in confetti spurting from the room, along with purple-green slick, which cakes the walls and ceiling with a hissing bubble as it eats the material.

Your augurs register the promethium stink, along with something sickly acrid.

Genstealer 4 is removed from play.

EDIT: Be aware that this corridor is now on FIRE.

FIRE = This is BAD. Astartes Flamers use promethium, which means if you are set on fire, you take a +4 damage from the hit.  The intensity is equal to the damage of the weapon as per Philemon/Lysimachus' attack. This will last until the start of the next Round.

ACID SLIME = This is BAD. It too will dissipate at the beginning of the next Round.  Contact with Acidic Slime will inflict non-preventable AP damage to your TDA (1D3). This may be fixed by Repair Cement.

Arcturion's darkly-ringed eyes darted from side to side in search of a foe with which to grapple, but found none, his brothers from Regent proving to be highly efficient killers. But this was just the rabble, the weaker specimens from the pack being culled through a natural selection as old as life itself. Kill or be killed.

This was merely the prelude to the onslaught, if the mound of xenos corpses scant meters from him was proof of anything.

His witch-sight would render in stark clarity what auspex and the other contrivances of the Mechanicus could never hope to do so, like painting with an incomplete pallette, like trying to paint without the knowledge of color itself. He centered himself and slowed his breathing, allowing for the riot of multihued auras and psychic impressions in the vicinity to creep into and saturate is vision.

But when he focused his mind upon his immediate surroundings, it was nought but a crushing bleak hellscape that greeted him. Dark shadows, twisted visions of gnashing teeth and rending claws assailed him, and he reflexively shut his eyes. Horrible, oily, inhuman shapes pressing up against one another in the darkness, pressing against him, suffocating him, devouring him. With a sharp intake of breath he wrenched his eyes open and staggered backward a couple of steps before regaining his composure.

It was only a vision… or was it?

+They're everywhere…! This place is infested! By the Emperor, they are without number!+

His eyes widened and his hearts pounded in his chest. Blood thundered in his ears and his lips peeled back in a feral snarl. Sharpened teeth of his own glistened with saliva. As he continued to reel backwards towards the center of mass of the squad, the focus which he had lost reasserted itself and his helm snapped around, looking directly through the thick walls directly at the mind of an alien presence lying in wait in the chamber beyond…

More xenos darted from the dwindling flames, and beyond them many of their kind gathered with heavier weapons. The mutants were the priority target but xenos blocked the way and as Luthais sought to swat away this most recent foe it darted back. Perhaps wary of the fate of its kin, but more likely stalling for time.

Philemon growled back at the hideous thing that hissed and snarled as it raced towards him. He caught the wicked, reaching claws on the heraldic shield mounted on the side of his Heavy Flamer and hurled the beast backwards. It was like a child's nightmare brought to life, but the Emperor's Blade was no child.

"I feel no fear!" he roared through his vox-speaker, "I am fear!"

It doesn't matter either way here, but I'm pretty sure I'm right to include Hatred and HoA bonuses to Parry? The blurbs for both say all WS tests when fighting/combating (not just attacking) the type of enemy.

"Make way for the Omnissiah's Wrath, Flesh Filth!" roared Korvaan.

The second Stealer to be targeted is struck in the chest, bolts bracketing it, before snapping chitin, rupturing flesh and bruising organs.  The aline beast howls and clutches at its body with an all-too human gesture, betraying its monstrous origin.

Just a quick GM Note - Stealers have Step Aside, which means they have an extra Reaction (basically allowing two Dodges).  Also, whenever Stealers Charge they are at -20 BS to Hit, when they Run they're at -40 BS to Hit, due to a Talent known as Hard Target.  I've not made allowance here because I forgot to mention it during their action phase, and as they're hit at Point Blank, it seems appropriate, and unfair after the fact.

Please note that is specific to THIS instance, as an equitable solution, and is not a future workaround for Hard Target.

For more info on Genestealer abilities have a look at their entry in MOTX when you all have a moment.

Initiative Order shuffle:

It has not escaped my attention that both Arcturion and Nergüi are kind of stuck with not much to do. A TDA and Stealer Roadblock have held things down a bit.

However, in order to keep the pressure on, and to follow my original intent, I will remedy this via GM Fiat before Luthais' Turn.

The Genestealers are relentless, without mercy or pause.  Thanks to the Iron Father, time has been bought, but it seems like that may be over, as one of the brutes begins to finally claw it's way through the barricade!

Genestealer 8 = 21 (20/20) [x]

The Stealers have not yet forced an entry point, but there is a gap they will soon be able to squeeze through. As the Stealer was a Blip, and the blips have already had their turn, this will allow the Players to act appropriately without disrupting the turn.  Feel free to add dramatic narrative.

As Korvaan moved past him to assist the others Nergüi kept an eye on the barricade behind them, it would not do to be accosted from the rear once they were in the narrow passage that Philemon and Luthais were advancing into.

Holding the genestealer before him at bay with a series of feints and cuts Luthais strikes a defensive posture, drawing both of the nearby xenos onto his claws as he sought to cut a path through their vanguard for his brothers to advance.

Luthais lashed out with the deadly energised claws mounted in his vambrace, cutting the genestealer in front of Philemon into gory chunks of flesh and chitin. The Emperor's Blade suddenly found himself lacking a target for Vindicta Dei's wrath. But he could see the wisdom in the Storm Warden's choice of target, for it had opened Philemon a clear path towards the horde of Hybrids massing in the next chamber, desperately readying their auto weapons.
