Desert Eagles wip

Recommended Posts

I have to admit defeat, the green stuff demons got the best of me...my commander will never get that shiny cape he had his eyes on. Hehe, seriously, I suck at sculpting and can’t really achieve anything but the most basic shapes and that cape never got any life even after several different attempts, so off it goes. But as you can tell, that’s not all I changed as I swapped weapons as well. Yes, I know, don’t go wasting those high initiative swings, but hammers just looks so cool. I used two of the totem eagles from the ravenwing sprues to customise the hammer a bit. It will need to be filled with some green stuff (but that’s actually something I can manage…) and I also need to add some gs to the waist, which will also be no biggie. Besides that all he needs is a nice base and he is ready for priming. The wings on his back are from the cherubs holding sister Celestine’s cape.

Honestly, I’m quite happy with how the mini turned out after all. In spite of my failures with the sculpting part, I think this version came out better than my original version with the sword.

for this guy ^^^ the thunder hammer needs a little cleaning up with the eagle head an' all but its a great i dea that really works

the little wing things look great too shame about the cape, could you cut and stick from another model? logan grimnar, plastic SM commander, marneus Calgar and lysander (although these are attached to the torso's, wait does lydander even have a cape? ;) meh!)

if you stuck a cape on then use minimal green stuff work to make it look like the wing things on top are the pins for the cape that could turn out brilliantly

IF and when I do a cape on my masters or deathwing commander I'm probably going to follow this guide, done years ago.

Its kinda old school but still a good way of making it happen.

Hope that helps

++edit: Not to be mean but don't let the final paint job throw you off, the actual model he did looks amazing.

Sorry for the late response, but thanks for the advice guys, some really nice tips in there. I was sort of encouraged by your support and tried my hands at it one more time...but...no, i still suck. :P

So This is what i ended up with, adding a chain and a sword. I think it looks alright and i'll most likely 99.9% sure stick with this sollution. But hey, you guys should know me by now and nothings final untill it's painted. :)

Anyway, decided to give myself a treat and started painting my dread. It's such a gorgeous mini that i havn't changed anything besides sticking 2 extra purity seals to it (on the plasma canon and the power plant). I went with the same colour scheme so that it will look more like a regular dread rather than a chaplain dread. I'm also trying to push my metallics forward as i feel they have been one of my weak points. I'm going for a worn look, with dirt and such sticking in the joints. Would appriciate if you let me know your thoughts of how this turned out. Any C&C welcome as usual.

I've been offline due to yet another move, and didn't catch this last post. OMG a chappy dread. And it fits your scheme perfectly. I've been working on my Grey Knight Army and picked up the GK dread, but while I was there my friend showed my the chappy dread and I was really torn about spending the money on him for the DA army or pick up the other for the GK. It was a tough choice because that dread you have is so gorgeous. Really well sculpted. And I agree hes going to look awesome once hes painted. It will be interesting to see what direction you go with him. White armor with light brown feathers? Or all monochromatic? I look forward to seeing your choice. ;)

Cheers and thanks for the support guys!

As far as a tutorial goes, i made something in those lines way back on page 5 or something. While i have gotten better at painting it since then (i hope, haha) the principles are pretty much the same. Maybe me using more earthy colours in the blacklining compared to that, but anyway, it's something atleast. I might do a better one later, but not anytime soon to be honest. But if anybody has any specific questions, i'll be more than happy to awnser as good as i can.

@Master Toddius: Well, i drool over most forgeworld dreads, and i personally really like the sarcophagus of the GK MK5 version. My favourite besides this chappy variant must be the new UM dread. Me wants it, precious, me needs it... But you need to get some pics up mate, i really want to see your stuff up on the boards asap! :)

The painting will probobly be monochromatic with orange details, like my termies, and some glowing plasmacoils for the canon, but we'll see. I'll put up some more pics when i get some more paint on it.

I will tomorrow actually. My Design firm laid off 75% of its staff 2 months ago and I was part of it. And no one is hiring Architects or Engineers out here at all right now. So now I have all the time in the world... ;) :D

BTW: I just saw the Land Raiders as well and the intended drop pod for your chappy dread of doom. You are really going for it now. This army is going to be off the chain when its done. You bought all the coolest stuff, too. I always knew you had good taste. :)

Sorry to hear mate. It's a crazy world right now where everything seems to look rather depressing. Here in Sweden lot's of people has been given notice, mainly in the industry area, like Volvo etc. So the global economics are hitting us hard as well. I really hope you don't get into any long term economic trouble due to this, you have my sympaties. On the bright side, i guess you could put the free hours into good use on your minis.

omg one of my mates is swedish and he is a legend there fore i have complete bias toward sewdish everything :P

i have to say swedish rap/techno is particularly funky ;)

anyways on a less bias note

for the dude with the sword (leader person)

are you going to paint him differently to distinguish him at all?

Hehe, well, i'm not much of a rap or techno kind of guy. Guess i'm mostly into rock and old school heavy metal, but as of late i've discovered country as well. Kris Kristoferson ftw!

On topic...i don't know how to paint him yet. Since my very first marine army way back before were Blood Angels, i kind of fancy the idea of golden comanders. So i might do that, otherwise it'll probobly be white like the rest.

Great looking stuff, man. :D Two thumbs waaay up! Love the terminators, you've given me some inspration for my army when I get time to work on it someday (hopefully soon) :)

I love the scratching/weathering/chipping effects on the armor. Nice simple scheme and simple effect with maximum pay off. That's really nice stuff and gives them a realistic/gritty look. :) All too often white/light colored marines look....well, white or showroom new. I like your technique. I'll have to figure out how to do it on black armor for my guys, but it is really well done. Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words rednekkboss.

Update on the dread. Well, most of the areas have lots of work left, so you have to try and look past that. What i'm curious about is what you guys think about the choice of making the skull metallic. I wanted a slightly more dark and sinister look to go with my scheme for the dread, thats the reason i didn't go bone. Also i felt there might be to much bone coloured skulls as i'll paint the trophy skulls bone as well.

And as i said earlier, one of the things i really want to try and improve is my metallics with this mini, and i'm quite pleased with how the skull turned out. But any advice on further improvment is much appriciated. I have used chainmail and mithril mixed with various mounts of black, earth, desert yellow and crimson gore (not all at once of course). The brightest areas are pure mithril or with a very slight tint of any of the above colours. I've also used som very watered down dull coat varnish/medium over the areas i didn't want to be to shiny...

I'm not just trying to flatter you, but that is the start of one of the most menacing and gothic dreads I've ever seen. The monotone look with all the subtle weathering effects along with the dread itself is very scary. Seriously. I think you really hit the nail on the head with this one so far.

yeesh. :D

Definitely the right direction.

++edit: Forge world should send you a check for such a great advertisment for this dread. :(

Oh, gee, thanks guys. You all make me blush.

Yeah, well, i'm happy with how the metalics are turning out, i've really put some extra effort into them so it's very satisfying that it seems to pay off...but there are lots more of them to be done, still plenty of time to fumble the ball, haha. :)

@Master Toddius: Haha, yeah, i'll accept free minis also.
