Great work Aerion!

I like the detail level in your latest image and love the way you made the white (and black) "come alive".

Not to sure about the skull shoulder pad though, as Im not sure it is quite on the same level as the rest of the image, but I cant put my finger on what exactly it is that I think is wrong with it.

All in all I would have to say its a damn fine image.

Keep it up! :tu:

Hello all, my brothers...

I'm sorry I've not been able to reply sooner to all of your praise, and critiques, but I've been swamped with work and it has taken a toll on my time in front of the monitor to answer kindly to those that give a little time of their daily duties to look at my artwork.

"Thank you" I guess doesn't cut it anymore, but that's what I'll keep saying everytime I see such encouraging posts after each of my Primarchs is uploaded onto the B&C. I hope to bring more awesome artwork to the boards to compensate my lack of posts.

I'm glad you all thought I did Mortarion justice. As I said, he was a quite daunting character to take upon (pun intended), along with Russ and The Emperor himself, I think. There's definitely a very defined image for him and to be able to give it a new twist whilst still keeping true to it has taken its toll on some details. I agree that the skull shoulderpad seems a bit warped, but that's due to the many, many teeth I added to it. An anatomical mistake, but those tend to happen when you're focusing on so many other things... there's also a bit of a problem with the scythe, as it appears bent to opposite sides if you see the shaft and the blade. That one was due to the blade not having volume (being a power-blade) and a lack of space wchih led to the shaft and blade sort of compressed.

All, in all, I think the good parts are worth the bad, and I'm glad you could see that overall it's still up to standard with the rest of my production in this project.

Finally, to add something new to this post as a token of my appreciation and an apology for not replying in so long a time, here's an image I did (one of my fabled MiniMasterpieces) of someone many of you asked me if I would be portraying in his Pre-Heresy glory:

Warmaster Horus

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/WarmasterHorus.jpg

As I said elsewhere, ever since I illustrated Horus for this "Libris Primaris" project, I've been asked if I was going to do a piece of him Pre-Heresy.

Thus, here he is; the Warmaster in all his Great Crusade glory. Back when the Imperium looked up at him in awe and wonder.

I'm quite proud of how it turned out and I didn't alter the design of his Post-Heresy armour much, because I wanted the contrast to show as much as possible, between the corrupted version and the Pre-Heresy version. There are small details I think also add to the whole, such as the pupils in his eyes, which are very clear. I've done all of my Primarchs's eyes fully white, to enhance their godly features; but I wanted Horus to feel closer to us. That's why I made his pupils noticeable when you pay attention, but if you see him from afar, the eyes are indeed resplandescent.

Regarding the armour: I've only read "Horus Rising" out of all the HH novels, and in there it states that his armour was gleaming white with the Eye of Terra upon its chest. So that's (as far as it goes nowadays) canon. The Terminator armour is debatable... on one hand, I do try and make the Primarchs's armour as original as I can, and some of them don't bear much resemblances with any Mk. of armour seen in the 41st Millenium. But Horus himself had always a very defined image (such as Sanguinius) and it was mainly due to Adrian Smith, so I tried to keep in tune with that.

I thought that making him look too different from his fallen self would make it harder to appreciate the irony and tragedy of his decay, thus I kept the Terminator armour.

So, I hope to hear from you all on this small but significant piece and get ready for the Khan! :)

'til soon.

Aerion.-

Absolutely amazing mate ;)

Your images are an original and refreshing take on these characters.

I've got to agree with Marshal Van Trapp in that I'm particularly looking forward to Guilliman! I'm not particularly interested in 'all things Ultra' to be honest, but I'm intrigued as to what you will do with the big RG ;)

Keep up the great work !!!

Love your work on this Aerion!

The golden decorations on his chest are particularly striking for some reason.

I cant help but notice the gold on this image is "dirtier" than we usually see in your style, but it works wonderfully!

Well done, keep it up! :HQ:

Simply Briliant... gorgeus work of the noble and beloved Horus... :D very nice done and one of the true chars i whanted to see...

And now im egerly awaiting Angron and Lorgar mostly though Gilliman seems iteresting to see too :)

Cheers on the awesome work Aerion

I think I'd prefer to see him in Luna Wolf regalia rather than the later Sons of Horus gear, but then, I'm more fond of the Luna Wolves on an aesthetic level than the Sons of Horus. (For that matter, I also prefer the Black Legion's colors and look to that of the Sons.)

Purely personal preferences aside, that's awesome work.

  • 4 weeks later...

Salutations once again, brothers!

It's been some time as usual and I thank those who are watching this thread intently for the patience (as well as the Mods of the board for allowing threadomancy to occur so periodically :teehee:).

I'm bringing here the latest update to this project and one you'll hopefully like! This Primarch has been asked for several times and many have been awaiting my take on him, so here he is, finally: Jaghatai Khan of the White Scars.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d61/aerion_the_faithful/KHAN.jpg

As usual, I'm quite proud of how this one turned out and I think it's a worthy successor of Mortarion and an "up to standard" companion to all his brothers. However, I do feel he stands out a bit more, because of his ethnic backround.

The White Scars Legion is the only oriental themed Legion in the GW gothic universe and it was a great challenge and a pleasure to instill into the Mighty Khan that Chinese/Japanese/Mongol flavour, without sticking to any in particular and rather enhancing his archetypal nature as the perfect Eastern Warrior.

Also, and something else worthy of notice is the background of this piece. The White Scars were renowned for their skill and excellence in the field of fast attack; their motorbike assaults were (and still are in the 41st Millenium) unrivalled and that stems from the fact that in their homeworld of Mundus Planus, the Khan won all of his battles and unified the planet with the force of his cavalry (a homage to Genghis Kahn, obviously) and his lightning strike tactics. This was achieved mainly because Chogoria was a rich planet, very fertile and filled with green plains, tall mountains and blue seas.

Thus, upon reading that description of a homeworld, it struck me as one of the very few not to have such a gothic and decayed atmosphere as the others. Something interesting to depict!

I hope you enjoy it, as usual, and let me know what you think!

Aerion.-

Though I have some "unfinished" feeling about the warmaster, think the claw is somehow un-necessary (and I'm not sure but maybe quite "un-fluffy" too), you gave him distant and calm features that fit perfectly.

JK is a killer ! At last some serious portrait for this primarch that endured the hi-heels and oversized topknot from Blanche the lucious for waaaaaaaay too long. Now there is presence, strengh, honor, anger... That's a Khan !

Sending ya a Primarch too in PM...

Fantastic – a particularly nice touch is the vertical script on the otherwise traditional purity seals. I think that they really sum up the fantastic blend of Gothic styling with Oriental touches that you've achieved here.

The pose is statesmanlike but alert, and the Oni faces* at his waist and the horse-heads on his bracers are fantastically characterful flourishes.

Well done!

*Sorry, not massively au fait with Eastern armour etc, but I think that's what they are!

I think you made a lovely rendition of Jagatai Khan but I have a little nitpick (even though I could never create something like this...) You've done him in a toad angle, i.e. looking upwards towards him, but the background is obviously made looking down on houses and a plain. The combined effect looks either like he is bending backwards or that the ground is bending forwards/upwards like a wave about to fall over him (There's definitely something strange with the angles on the house roof and the house).

If I were you I would skip the houses, asian though they may be and instead go with open blue skies and perhaps just a tree or something to enforce the plains perspective. But hey, it's your masterpiece, and masterpiece it is :tu:

I've been away from the game for a while, but I'm starting to build up a basic SM (Dark Angels) force again and this is the first thread I run into here on B&C and OMG! These are amazing, man. Are these all digitally done? Or are you scanning pencils n such?

Either way, fantastic! Just to add to the madness, my fave is Perterburo, man he looks bad@$$!

Love the Khan image Aerion!

Everything about it is great actually. The pose, the look of his face, the white, the gold, the red, the background, the scripture, the details and especially the sword!

This image is truly a work of art! - No pun intended.

One of your best! - Cant wait to see what you come up with next!

Keep it up!

I love the new additions, but I have to ask...

Why doesn't the newest Warmaster Horus not have a border for his image, in the style of your other Primarchs? You should make it to fit with the rest of your works, that image is just crying for it to have the full 'Libris Primaris' makeover!

Otherwise, a brilliant image of the Khan, by the way, really 'Mongol' if you know what i mean, loads of really eastern details that make him stand out, great work!

Can't wait for the other Primarchs, but I'm especially looking forward to Vulkan!

I've run out of words..... Khan is freaking awesome! ^_^

I really like his pose, how he's holding his sword - concentrated and calm, ready to strike, that's great!

I've seen only one Khan's image so far - made by Blanche - and wasn't impressed by it, but Aerion's Khan is shown as an epic oriental warrior, his face reflects both bravery, intelligence, combat wisdom, calmness and experience - IMHO all the qualities that are natural to someone so great like Khan!

I've been addicted to Aerion's images since his first post, and Khan is another brilliant piece of art! :P :tu:

Aerion, I'll be the first to admit I have your photobucket page bookmarked in my favorites :P I always find myself checking for new stuff from time to time, just because the flavor of art you bring to 40k is so unique. Unlike the codex artwork, your pictures have a touch of your own personality in them, which is something I admire. The codex art all looks the same, because it's all aimed at a similar style. Yours, however, is unique.

Bring on Konrad Kurze

Cheers,

-Kal

if you check his gallery he has already done Night Haunter twice
