EDIT

My NightLord thread

Edited by KhornateKiller

Well the wraiths are kicking my butt. I figure i need to paint at least 36 Power armored models for the LPC and i've only scratched on 7 <_<

the test marine came out well but he was even unfinished. Now i've hit a couple of bumps and can't decide where to take the colors.

gallery_31335_1757_61913.jpg

The test marine is in the bottom center. All the marines still have 1-2 highlights left on the green, and pretty much all the other colors are at basecoat.

The red on the shoulderpads is clashing with the blue/green. I can't decide if i should take the basecoat down to a darker, more earthy red, and start from there, or if i should give it a hint of purple/blue.

I was thinking originally that i would do the plasma coils in a red-orange-white. I'm not sure those would look great so i'm open to any ideas.

gallery_31335_1757_7433.jpg

Lastly i think i may have to wash the skulls and bones down. There are a lot of pale colors on the models and it's not really unifying. The test model i didn't finish the skulls on but i'm starting to think they may be an appropriate brown.

I sent an E-mail to GW customer service with my question about LotR models and conversions, as well as a picture. It's been about ten days with no response...That sounds about right :D

Cavpathfinder, i'm glad you're digging the conversions and paint. I really wish i hadn't committed so much of my army to the Lpc. I have plans for a few upcoming units swimming around my head. I just can't find the time to spend on them.

Anyways,

C+C welcome

Enjoy!

As I'm not yet a "Painter" all I can offer is just opinion.

The shoulder pad: The red really draws my attention. Unfortunately it draws my attention away from your awesome conversions. I can't even begin to explain how to tone it down, but I think that's what the red needs. Maybe a leathery look and feel. Bat wings are leathery right?

The Plasma guns: if you would have gone with a bright red/orange color, I think that would have done the same. The normal power blue scheme should fit in real nice.

The skulls, I like the test model, maybe with a few dry brush layers. but not too bright.

I love your highlights, especially the way they draw my eye to the chaos star on the test model. If you were to pick out points you'd like to show off like the dryad heads, the corpse cart driver face. And ensure they get the same treatment as the chaos star of the test model.

Overall I can tell by the smoothness of the paint and the way the colors blend together so well, you've put a lot of time and patience into them. great job.

Like I said I'm no "painter", so these are just some observations from an average joe.

P.S.

I finally got off my rear end and started putting some real effort into my guys. Thanks for the motivation.

updates

I've been lacking lately i know. I'm in my first semester of full time school since 04. I'm trying not to get behind and my hobby time has been taking a hit. There hasn't been much to post up since i'm not making progress worth posting, but here's what i've been doing.

The wraiths.... I'm tired of looking at them. I stopped painting them about two weeks ago.

Here's what the brown wings started looking like. I'm not sold on them yet.

Here's the Raptor Lord Redux.

gallery_31335_1757_38808.jpg

I redid his legs because the last ones started to bug me. They were kind of busy while the rest of him was rather plan and ornate. He is less 'actiony' than before but i think the pose is a little more imposing. I also made a new head for him. I think this one is a little more raptor-like and doesn't hold any similarities with any other helmets i've made.

The picture given is of the same model with two different torso angles. Which do you guys like the most, left or right?

And finally the rest of my troops are in this stage of painting.

And some teasers if you can find them

Enjoy

I thought I was a bit of a genius with the plot to use the skull helms as Word Bearer or Night Lord Berserker squads. It hadn't occurred to me that the idea'd be, like, actually sort of obvious and awesomely used by people already.

Havent commented on this for a while but the new mask on the Raptor Lord just blew me away! It looks awesome!

Dan sent you an email about you know..but hey I just wanted to say that to make your wraiths "come together" Base them. Get some texture and color under their feet to make them pop a bit and be sparing with the grass. As is they feel plain and muted. Contrast which you desire is lacking because there is no frame to the models color or focal point.

Each model should have a focus. Usually its the face and emotions therein. Sometimes its a light source eminating. Somtimes its the skulls or blood.

A wash will tone down some of the super contrasting highlights. What it wont do is add the focus. This my freind is where you need to look at a color wheel. The wraiths look like wraits because the dont have contrast ie they have two complimentary colors. You need to pic a third color to put somewhere and add the details/highlights to make that color stand up alone. If I had to pin the culprit of them not coming together Id say the light blue. Its too cold and close to the green. Whats hard to say is weather higlighting this will add or take away from the wraith feel. One other thing you can try is add nice dark to bright red bolter casings. I suggest red but you can pick any color opposite the green on the color wheel.

I say this base them and then look again. Try this basing formula.

Beasty first

50/50 Beasty Scorufulos dry brush

Scorufulos light Dry Brush

Bright Green grass, in tiny patches.

Good Luck.

Maybe keeping the Red wings on the shoulder pad would do me some good then. If i were to tone down the skull white highlights the red would draw some more attention if I'm reading your theory correctly.

I think the light blue is going to give me a problem. It was the base color that i left in all the recesses and crevices to get the feel i was looking for.

gallery_31335_1757_18755.jpg

Why is it that the test model looks so much better than the rest?

as far as the winged pads.... what about going a nice deep brass like you've used for some other accents on the models (biggest example I can see is the bells swinging from the waste of one of them). Would tie some other details together and would work with the other muted metallics you've used.

Well it's been a couple of weeks. I've decided to give up on my LPC oath after I discovered that the Zerks and Hydra's Teeth were frosted after my priming session. Thankfully not all of my models were given the gritty treatment, only about half of the ones i was working on.

here's my painting update...

gallery_31335_1757_35013.jpg

Yeah, LAME :o

However all is not lost. I've been working on some new units lately and have explored some other alternatives.

First up is my Thousand Sons incarnation. They are Night Lords... Rant away ;)

Rubric # 1

Rubric # 2

gallery_31335_1757_19274.jpg

The Sorcorer

gallery_31335_1757_7523.jpg

Well, I had a good idea on how to model some kick butt looking Thousand Sons. Upon doing it I decided to mold them into my Night Lord force with a little bit of fluffy background. Here's a little Time line.

My guys invade planet Y as part of a large chaos force.

Their primary objective was in close proximity to that of a Thousand Sons Cabal.

Near extraction Astartes of the 18th Battle Co notice a Rubric squad standing sentinel with a dead aspiring sorceror.

- Finders Keepers - Drag the dead leader into their transports and usher the suits of armor to follow suit.

Once safely aboard the 18th's ship their old affiliation is removed and replaced with that of the 8th Legion.

A member of the 18th with strong connections to the warp is chosen to lead these prizes into battle.

I almost never model a new unit based off something i already Play. The Hydra's Teeth, Wraiths, And War-leader Immortals (termis) were never play tested before i made them. I still need to sculpt some fire around their heads and up the psy-hood. The Sorc needs some final loving and i'm waiting on parts to finish him up. i don't particularly like the style of the Thousand sons on the table but I wanted to make some guys who looked like this. I will probably keep them at 5 and just keep them around because they look neat.

So there it is, Thousand Son Night Lords. Hell has frozen.

And then there's this guy

gallery_31335_1757_21525.jpg

He used to be a staple in my old lists. I've recently finished him up and will probably stick him back into my games.

On the Horizon, Raptors, and Chosen. Maybe a dread or two :(

(oh, and an article for my shameful vow)

That sorceror is so epic ! I can imagine him standing on a hill covered with crooked and burnt trees. The air deadly silent ... Then suddenly the sorceror begins whispering evil incantations, the wind begins to blow, weakly at first but it quicky asends into a howling gale. Suddenly the infinte energys of the warp rush into him, penetrate his mind and body. The weather rises and turns into a vast warpstorm, ice cold rain sprays onto his helmet, slides down his voxgrill and drips onto the ground. He utters one. Final. Foul. Word and bolts of warplightning crash out of the dark clouds and into the ranks of the enemy, the deathscream of a billion souls.
