Interested in a conversion challenge?

Recommended Posts

Ooh interesting choice, I was considering converting the other part of chronus and wasn't sure what to do with the tank bit, so I'll start brainstorming on how to use the torso, I think maybe it's about time my army got a generic captain with relic blade, so expect a suitable Iron Hands conversion :).
Okay, great. So who did you get to judge with you, in the end?

2 GW employees, and one of the guys from my gaming group are the main judges. I've got another guy for my gaming group for back up if needed. Sorry, not giving out names.

just to address a question raised in the actual Challenge thread (Reminder: The Challenge thread is to be used ONLY for entries and announcements by the judges. all questions, concerns or comments are to be made in this thread).

waitingtobedisciplined raised a question about his use of a part of the required piece, specifically the fact that he cut the scanner array off the body and is using it as a hand weapon. This is fine. The entry is legal, and meets all requirements.

I've decided to take part, luckily I was in town today so I have the part and will start soon. Next time though I really would like to see a theme based one, something like Last Stand. Just thinking that more people will take part if they can just kit bash. This said Chronus is starting to grow on me :cuss

Now. To work!

It wouldn't exactly be a "challenge" if it were easy. I've received several complaints about the part that was selected. Tell ya what, next time I run a conversion challenge I make sure to select Calgar's Torso as the required part. I mean the arms are separate, the legs are separate, the head is separate. It's a nice looking terminator torso with a cloak and some really ornate detailing. So what if you have to buy a $35 kit that also gets you 4 very Ultramarine specific models that have no value outside of an Ultramarines army? Come on folks, grow up. I'm not holding a gun to your head making you take part in the challenge. It's a little competitive fun. Nothing more, nothing less. You don't like the required, fine don't participate in the challenge.

Sorry for the rant guys, but I'm getting a little annoyed by some of the reactions I'm receiving about this challenge.

@ Maverike_prime - don't worry about it mate, some people just don't appreciate the challenge. Look not at the amount of complaints you had regarding the part, but at the amount of people who are entering who haven't complained - I bet the latter outnumbers the former.

I already own Cronus and converted him into a Sternguard, but that didn't stop me from buying the model again to take part! I hope the next time you run this you'll pick an even more difficult model to use, as that will force people to put some insane effort into it and make the final results even better!

Well, enough from me - I have a bitz box to raid!

actually I can only confirm one person has having entered and 2 others who are talking about entering but have not yet submitted an entry. I've received 7 complaints about the part. While I feel confident that there will be more the one entry made so far, I'm one of those people that doesn't believe something until it's real. So while the original discussion encumpassed 15-20 people, most of which seemed interested in the challenge, thus far there has only been a single entry. I'm not trying to be negative all peachy or anything, but it's just the way I'm wired. What is, is. And what is is that I've gotten 7 complaints connected to the challenge, and those 7 stack up against the single entry.

Anyway, enough ranting and whining and complaining. On with the Challenge!

We've already got one really great Nurgle Marine entry made using the required part. I admit that one came out of left field for me. I was expecting an Iron Warrior conversion to be the first entry. That said, the Green stuff work is impressive. Lets get going folks! I've got a couple ideas for conversions myself using the part. Might be a bit of a conflict of interest for the judge to make an entry though.

Anyone wanna do an Iron Warriors Biker Conversion using the bit for me? :)

I wasn't complaining about the part. Honest :)

But yeah, this is what I mean. Perhaps a theme based where the judges give points for things like embodying the theme, skill those kind of things?

And my conversion is going to be speedy...not giving much away me ;) (Although I'm pretty close to the IW biker desire by you Maverike)

I might not think the optimum piece was selected, but heck I wasn't the one choosing now was I! :)

And I agree, it is a challenge, it not being the piece you already had 11 plans for will just make it that much more of a brain-buster to come up with something sweet.

I'll check the store on saturday, if I can make it, to see if they have him in, as well as take a second glance at the model. I'm still sitting on the fence If I feel he is worth it.

But even if I feel that he isn't, no one forces me to enter the challenge, and it's not like I have payed an entry-fee already that I'm now loosing.

So I say as conclusion, I might not love the piece selected. BUT I do love the fact that someone had the drive´to set something like this up for the rest of us.

Hats off to you my friend, and thanks ;)

I've had a change of plan after I picked up the model and he will be getting a slightly more ambitious conversion than initially planned, and as for the people complaining about buying chronus, I've forked out for a more expensive model to get some bits needed for my conversion, so my cost for this project so far is £22... I guess some people don't enjoy a challenge as much as I do.

whoo me ;)

cheers, I didn't actually express how pleased that you have actually done a conversion contest, its something I really didn't expect someone to do off their own back, ignore the complaints, if they can't utilise the part, they weren't going to add anything good anyway. I didn't expect the part, and was planning on Lysander, but the fact you chose a less used piece, really made me think of my feet, so thanks :)

I for one think this is an excelent idea and am already about 60-70% through my conversion, luckily for me Cronus has been sat on my desk for months waiting to be made into something, and as soon a i saw the competition thread inspiration struck and i performed a major raid on my bits box! If no pics tonight then tomorow for sure. Keep it up mate this is a brilliant idea, and i can't wait for the next one.

S.O.N.

I'm definitely entering, so chalk me up as another one who is in the "isn't complaining about the bit" group. I don't think my LGS has the Chronus blister, so I'll have to order it, probably. No big, I convert quick.

I got plans for this one, I do. Now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL bitz box!

I do. Now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL bitz box!

um... how exactly can a bitz box NOT be operational?

Just double checking... Can we take both arms off? The rules say JUST the torso and scanner but i thought I'd double check... Even though it's too late...

I'm really not going to try and get down to a legal system of establishing what qualifies as using the part and what doesn't. As long as the part is a component of the final conversion, chances are good that you're in the clear. I mean I'm not giving out cash prizes or anything for this challenge, so I don't think it would be of any benifit to create this whole use list of legalities like "The chest symbol is not considered to be a part of the part" or whatever. Take the piece, and go to town. If I can't see the piece right away in the finished conversion, I'll ask you to point it out for me.

Not wanting to sound like a whiner but getting a Sergeant Chronus is proving to be a bit of a task in this country. Anyway I have a question, I'm cutting off the scanner array and using it as part of a chainsword engine when I get the model, and using the rod that the array is perched on top of as the core for a greenstuff chainsword. Seeing as the piece would be obscured is that legal?

This sentence, makes me a very happy man :)

Hasaroth, if you have a look Here on the chalenge thread and take a look at waitingtobedisciplined's entry, should answer your question mate :P

What Son said. Basically this is more about the challenge then the part itself. If you want some safety lines to stay inside of, as long as you use the torso itself you're good. So if you want to cut off the arm and part swap it, and remove the scanner entirely you'll be fine. If you was to Carve out the Ultramarine Iconogrphy and green stuff on Chaos icons, you're fine.

I think the idea of limiting the conversion to a very specific piece actually makes this a true "challenge". I've got tons of conversion ideas for my squad boxes but never really thought about using Chronus before this challenge was issued. That being said I'm a slow, slow converter one more reason I like the deadline in the challenge so hopefully my Raven Guard sergeant will be ready by then. Regardless I hope you keep this challenge going in the future and keeping using the same selection process for the piece. Darts never lie!

Can report good progress :) Hope to post pics tomorrow at some point.

Some really really good entries already! Good work and people, keep them coming :)

EDIT: Pretty much finished my entry, will post pics tomorrow when I've got some good natural light to do it in.

yeah i just got my bitz in today and i began converting right away. I still got some green stuffing to do, and then i have to get my magnets in so i can magnetize some backpack options. I am still tossing up some extra stuff i can do to my conversion to make him stand out in his chosen role more. Guess i will be debating over it. I really want to get this guy finished so i can show you guys what i am working on. I am bursting as it is to let this conversions slip right now, but i will still keep it on a hush hush and just post some pics when i get it finised. I hope to get pics posted either by thursday evening, but if not then i guess they will have to wait till next tuesday after i get back in town from memorial day.
