The Sekhmet+HH Emperor's Children: Imperial Fists Deathwing 12/4/24

I mean, they're all fantastic Kizz - you've outdone yourself

Love the scheme you've gone for on the Iron Hand - normally, I prefer the oil-stained scheme for adding colour to what would otherwise be a pretty monotone scheme, but the way you've painted the lenses gives the model great contrast that would look great en-masse

In terms of the next Legion, how about one which would synergise well with your ECs - if you wanted fluffy, the Sons of Horus would work ... or the Iron Hands

Man, this has certainly been some project! Congratulations on finishing all those test Marines -- however, you're not done yet, buddy: Still missing a Lightning Bearer ;)

Anyway, that composite picture is absolutely brilliant! Forgeworld should use that image as an official advertisement for the Horus Heresy in general and the plastic MK IV Marines in particular. I just can't stop looking at it and keep seeing new details ;)

As for which legion to go for, the good news is that you seem to be able to do an incredible job with each of them! Going by the quality of your test models and by which legion could use a project of your fantastic standards, I'd choose these favourites:

  • World Eaters: Not exactly a surprise, huh? They're not only my favourite legion, however, I also think that your Delvarus counts-as shows that you would really create an outstanding WE force, right up there with poom's incredible World Eaters.
  • White Scars: Possibly my least favourite Astartes Legion (on second thought, Raven Guard scores even lower, but yeah), but your test model is just so cool that I would like to see more.
  • Sons of Horus: I think your approach for the Sons is really interesting and original.
  • Space Wolves: Again, your recipe is pleasantly different from all the 40k Wolves and makes for a far grittier, stripped-down take on the legion that I would love to see expanded.

What gets me, and still something I can't get my head around, is why some of the legions opted for a change in colour scheme after the heresy...

Space wolves went from dark grey to almost cartoon grey - but no reason why.

Dark Angels went from black to dark green - mostly (and someone mentioned) to differentiate from the fallen.

Emperor's Children went from purple and gold to argh my eyes pink. Due to their crazy debauch

Thousand sons went from awesome red to an ethereal electric blue - I presume from the rubric.

Eh...

Hey there,

some amazing work you got there! I hope you don´t mind me saying your Fulgrim looks quite a bit like he is pole-dancing. ;)

For every other Primarch model, that would be a terrible outcome! For Fulgrim, it's just deliciously meta! :)

I think it's only Ahriman's TS that changed colour; the ones loyal to Magnus still have the red armour I think.

How did I miss Lord Fulgrim's update! He is other-worldly with the firebrand and that standard is phenomenal. Seeing this makes me a bit sad he became a four-armed, winged, serpent thing later on. I have to say I would love to see a shot of him on the battlefield leading the Emperor's Children's charge!

I can't help but think that there's just one more color scheme you seem to be missing...and that's a gray Word Bearer.

Truly, every mini you painted was unique and full of character. Furthermore I think the Dark Angel most grabbed my attention, the depth and quality of the black armor really made a believer out of me.

Whichever you choose I'll be tuned in and excited for your next mini!

I have to echo the sentiments of the others, awesome stuff. It really should be a poster on the FW site. A great idea doing all the Legions! Although, I'd really like to see a Luna Wolf.....

As for your next task, I'd suggest you cool your jets and wait for the rumoured Prospero box; that'd allow the return of the Sekhmet... and maybe even some Wolves... However, I really would suggest a legion a world removed from clean, pristine ECs; which might preclude TS. I think something like a Dark Angel Deathwing would look fun!

Thanks for all of the encourage and nice words! Hearing that other people enjoy and appreciate your work has to one of the greatest motivators there is. That's why forums like the B&C are so important.

Nothing but quality in those 18 paint jobs.
As for selecting your next legion..
Which did you enjoy painting the most?
Which colour gives you most grief?
Which legion fluff most appeals to you?

And if you still can't decide make the picture large enough all 18 fit on the screen, cover your eyes and point :tongue.:

Thanks, dude! It's hard to say which one I enjoyed the most. Some of them took me a while to get in to, but in the end I enjoyed them all. The Alpha Legion was probably the most problematic because it's difficult to touch up any mistakes, but on the other hand it's also the easiest/quickest to paint. Plus weathering means that any mistakes can be covered up that way too. In regards to the fluff I enjoy most of the Horus Heresy background. Before reading Angels of Caliban I wasn't too keen on the Dark Angels, and before reading Wolf King I wasn't super keen on the VIth Legion. That's not to say I didn't like those two Legions, it's just that I didn't rate them as highly as the other Legions. Now I have a much better appreciation for them and could see myself collecting an army of either Legion. That's the problem. I like them all...

Just do all the legions!

Whichever you decide to go with, I can't wait to see the result. Especially if you're going to weather them, they'll be a nice contrast to your Emperors Children.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't make a decision around here!

Hahaha, I wish... Which ever Legion I go with I'll give them plenty of weathering. You can be sure of that.

Saw these over on FB and they look awesome. If I could make a suggestion? I think you should look at Fists or Scars for your legion. Looking at the group pic they really stand out and show off your skills the lost I think.

Thanks a lot, bro! I enjoyed painting the Imperial Fist and the White Scars would definitely offer me a different style of playing. Thanks for the suggestion.

All. Go for Scars, Fists vor Worldeater. Those are my favs (okay i like theEmperors Children most but those you have already)

Hahaha, glad you like the Emperor's Children. You obviously have excellent taste. It seems like the Fists and Scars are popular too.

Superb work brother. Each model is an individual and the each individual is painted to a standard I'd be proud of.

As for a Legion project, how about focusing on an unusual role for a Legion that specialises in something else? Like, Fists are siege experts, defenders and void fighters, so what about some hit and run forces? Likewise, Scars are the opposite being the premier bike-mounted Legion, but what about making a project about an insertion squad? Or the Alpha Legion as a terminator-led armoured force?

I think you get what I mean, brother. :smile.:

Thanks a lot, dude! I like the idea of an atypical Legion force, it would definitely be fairly unique and could be fun from a painting modelling perspective. The only problem is that it can often limit the options that you have from a gaming perspective and more importantly it can also lead to a lessening of whatever it is that makes each of the Legions unique. I've already experienced this with my Loyalist Emperor's Children. No 3rd Company Elite, no sonic shriekers, no Fulgrim, no Eidolon, no Phoenix Guard etc. Of course it's possible to create your own unique fluff and flavour, we've got some great examples of this kind of creativity right here on the B&C. Unfortunately my skills are better suited to the physical side of the hobby, the painting and modelling. It I had a great idea I'd definitely run with it, but it would have to be a pretty good idea.

Really really cool to see the 18 legions man! So diverse yet cohesive from the paint style and basing. And, hey, in terms of legions, you're always welcome amongst the VIIIth:wink:

Hahaha, thanks bro! The terror markings that I painted on the Nigh Lord's helmet are probably my favourite example of freehand in the entire project.

Thanks bro, that means a lot! Yeah, I was really unsure how to paint the Iron Hand, hence I left him until last. I new that I didn't want to go the usual 40k route with the black, silver, and white. Originally I wanted to go for a metallic black, but the silver paint that I added to the black was a bit to dominant in the mix. I did know that I wanted everything to be metallic, but that was about as much as I knew, so in the end it was a bit of an experiment. I'm happy with how it turned out though. Especially the cold/blue eyes.

The Sons of Horus would work well for Traitor or pre Heresy Emperor's Children, but my EC are Loyalists. Having said that, the Sons are one of the Legions that I've been considering quite closely. The Iron Hands are an interesting one. I hadn't really considered them until I painted the test mini. I'd always found the colour scheme a bit boring, but I really enjoyed painting up the mini. Maybe a post Istvann Clan Morragul army would be fun.

While I would love to see you do Blood Angels, what about picking a traditionally loyalist legion and doing some traitors? I know this doesn't preclude you from doing BA, but the traitor loyalists would be a nice counterpoint to your EC.

Yeah, traitors from a loyal Legion would be pretty fun. Especially as Black Shields or a shattered Legion force. Unfortunately traitor-loyalists have the same problem as loyal-traitors. The danger is that you miss out on a lot of the features that give each of the Legions their particular character.

Kizzdougs, you just raised the bar to the outer reaches of the hemisphere. That is an outstanding collection you have right there. FW should put that on their page as an advert for their range, it's that good.

Little bit jealous right now.

Thanks so much for the kind words, bro! I'm really pleased that my interpretations of the Legions have been so well recieved by the community.

Iron Hand looks great.  I am in favourite of you doing Wolves next but if not how about Iron Hands you can cover Pilgrim and Ferrus' bromance then.  The batter Iron Hand armour would make a nice contrast to your pristine EC if you ran them together in games.

Thanks, bro! I love the character and aesthetic of the VIth Legion, but I'm not entirely satisfied with my colour scheme. I've been considering trying a Wolf in metallic grey armour as apposed to the flat grey that I've gone with for my test minis.

This brought a manly, traitorous tear to my heretical eye. Bravo, good sir. The best way to finish this up is to do more Death Guard.

Hahahaha, glad you like them, bro!

I think it should be the iron warriors...

I don't feel that I really did the IVth Legion justice in the project. Maybe I should paint a new test mini.

Man, this has certainly been some project! Congratulations on finishing all those test Marines -- however, you're not done yet, buddy: Still missing a Lightning Bearer

Hahaha, the Lightning Bearer will happen. I just need to come up with some ideas for the mini.

Really glad that you like the collage as well!

Yeah, I love the World Eaters, but I'll be waiting for some plastic MkII or III before a consider the XIIth Legion. I feel that they really need the brutality of the earlier Mks. I love the idea of a Jetbike heavy army, but unfortunately the $ cost of the FW jetbikes would make that quite a serious investment. Yeah, the Sons are another Legion that I really like. I'd probally go with a First Company theme if I went with them, so lots of Justaerin and Catulan Reavers. I'll wait to see the rules of the Wolves before seriously considering them. If they have access to an elite combat orientated or drop pod list I'll definitely give them some thought.

Eh...

After such a traumatic and consequential event, it seems fairly natural that some of the Legions would change their colour scheme/identity.

I'm not too sure about the change in the Wolves armour colour. I have heard that GW changed the colour scheme early on because the blue-grey photographed better than the more regular grey that they were originally painted in. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with why we still have the difference between pre and post Heresy schemes.

For the Dark Angels I'm pretty sure it's a tribute to the forests of lost Caliban.

The Emperor's Children's scheme change is pretty self explanatory. Slaanesh.

Not to sure about the Thousand Sons, but I'd suggest it had something to do with the influence of Tzeentch and the effects of living on a Daemon world in the Eye of Terror. The 'Visions of Heresy' artwork shows some Thousand Sons who armour seems to be 'organically' changing in colour.

I'm sorry but word bearers... conversion potential plus your scheme and a good opposing force for your loyalists.

I've been considering the Word Bearers as the base for an Army of Dark Compliance. The conversion opportunities for both the Legion and militia/cultists would be massive.

Hey there,

some amazing work you got there! I hope you don´t mind me saying your Fulgrim looks quite a bit like he is pole-dancing.

Hahaha, don't worry bro. I had the exact same thought when I was build him.

Yeah, Fulgrim is a pretty sad case. He was one of the most loyal and faithful Primarchs but his weaknesses saw him fall further and faster than many of his brothers. If I ever use him in a game I'll be sure to take some pics.

Absolutely incredible work, kizz. Fulgrim is amazing and its awesome to see all your finished legionnaires. Really cant wait to see whats next!

Thanks a lot, mate!

Whichever you choose I'll be tuned in and excited for your next mini!

Haha, then I'd have to paint a Luna Wolf, Warhound, Dusk Raider, Saturnine Ram etc. I'm glad that you like the Dark Angel! I've found that weathering and battle damage really helps to give character and depth to black armour. It almost makes me want to paint some Black Templars or Deathwatch marines.

Awesome 18 legions!

Thanks bro!

The Angel looks great, really battered.

Ace work with all the legionnaires.

Thanks a lot, dude!

Yeah, waiting for the new box is a very good idea. The armour Mks that it contains will definitely have a big influence on the Legions that I consider. Don't worry, which ever Legion I choose it will be weathered and hacked up for sure.

@The Hydra: Thanks bro, I'm looking forward to what ever comes next. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for the inspiration to strike.

Thanks for looking

Thanks guys!

I've just picked up a copy of the new White Dwarf, so now I have an AoS Slaughterpriest that needs to be painted up/converted.

In case anyone wasn't aware, GW is giving away a free Slaughterpriest with the new format WD.

Not my mini!

99070201015_SlaughterpriestHackbladeWrat

So I need to convert him up somehow...

I've had a couple of ideas so far:

1. A Khorne Champion/Berzerker inspired by the new Khârn mini.

2. A Thunder Warrior who has gone a bit off the rails...

3. A XIIth Legion Inductii warrior.

4. A chaos Champion, maybe Undivided or Slaanesh.

5. Something else?

So what do you guys recon? Any ideas?

Thanks for looking

...a plastic version of Angron?! ;)

Seriously, I've already converted the other Slaughterpriest into a plastic Angron, and this guy would work really well for a similar conversion, if you ask me. If anything, the pose is even better. The one thing missing is the perfect bare face from the alternate Slaughterpriest model. But you'll be able to figure something out. Stormcast Eternal breast plates are a pretty good match for Angron's "official" armour. Just sayin'...

Failing that, my favourite options from your list are the Khârn counts-as or the Tunder Warrior.
