Time for the step by step :)

I primed the mini with a coat of Chaos Black spray.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4202_zpsygzagjp5.jpg

I started painting the armour with Waaagh! Flesh.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4203_zpssemgnchi.jpg

I then sponged the armour with Snot Green (Warpstone Glow).

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4204_zpsw52dx1dc.jpg

Next I washed the armour with some thinned down Nuln Oil. When thinning washes make sure you use an actual thinning agent rather than water.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4205_zpsqiijvrmx.jpg

The gold was base coated with Balthazar Gold.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4206_zps2tfnnqrw.jpg

The steel was painted with Leadbelcher.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4207_zpsog8ax5xb.jpg

The brighter gold is Retributor Armour.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4208_zpszf3gnmkl.jpg

Next I painted the flamer's casing, the pistol holster, and the ammo pouches were painted with Abaddon Black.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4209_zpsks3wdece.jpg

Both golds were then washed with Agrax Earthshade.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4210_zpslwz78bkp.jpg

The Leadbelcher was washed with Nuln Oil.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4211_zpshu9ibeo1.jpg

I then highlighted all of the metallics with Runefang Steel.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4212_zpsjsmezuh2.jpg

Next up I painted the flame details. I used a 1/3 Khorne Red/Slayer Orange mix. I wasn't particularly careful or creative with the flames because I new that the weathering would hide any imperfections.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4213_zpsbdh3vs9v.jpg

I then used some watered down Slayer Orange to pain the next stage of the flames. I watered down the orange so that the original mix would still show through and I made sure to leave the tops of the flames clear.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4214_zpspevlybi7.jpg

I then did the same thing with Golden Yellow, but made sure that I created a more dappled effect and that most of the yellow was concentrated at the base of the fire.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4215_zpsbwjuwbzq.jpg

I then watered down some Abaddon Black to paint the 'coals'.

See the next post for pt. 2 of the tutorial

Man, he must have quite terrible flatulence... :teehee:

He looks fantastic, kizz! Which Legion is next?

Hahaha, that gave me a good laugh! I'm working on an Ultramarine next.

About the next legion, I don't think I've seen you do an Ultramarine yet. *hint *hint *wink *wink.

Funny you should say that. I just started work on an Ultramarine yesterday.

Lookin' pretty spiffy, all 'round. Good work.

Thanks dude, glad you like him.

Now that would be a challenge. The only MkI that I'm aware of is the special mini in the set released by GW years ago. Is there another source?

Unfortunately I don't think there is. It's quite a big challange if you don't want to use the old GW model, maybe something to think about in the future.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case. I'll have to have a look into it.

That Salamander looks as though he's straight out of the Retribution artwork. Great work man!

Thanks a lot bro, that's exactly what I was going for.

He's beautiful. /wipes eyes. Oh man my allergies are acting up.

Hahaha, damn allergies :P

Pt. 2 of the Salamander tutorial

Next up I highlighted the armour with Snot Green (Warpstone Glow).

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4217_zpscji8zkq9.jpg

Decal time. As usual I started off with a layer of gloss varnish to create a smooth surface for the decals. After the decals were applied I used some decal softener to help them better adhere to the curved surface of the shoulder pads. Once the softener had dried I gave them a coat of matt varnish to seal them.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4218_zpsmrhqyrta.jpg

Next up I weathered the decals by sponging on some Abaddon Black.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4219_zpscecjt98j.jpg

I struggled to get the Salamander icon to lay flat so I ended up weathering it a bit more than I would have liked to.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4220_zpsud1zrcoa.jpg

I then used the same sponging method to weather the rest of the armour.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4221_zpsn82dh1r3.jpg

Next up I sponged Leadbelcher over the areas that had be weathered with the Abaddon Black in the previous stage. Make sure to leave some of the black weathering show around the edges of the Leadbelcher stage.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4222_zpsknrs8wcl.jpg

The eyes. I started the eyes with Blood Red, making sure to leave a ring of black around the edges of the lenses. I also painted a thin line of red on the edge of the face plate below the eye.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4223_zps4w68ltxp.jpg

I then highlighted the eyes with Slayer Orange.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4224_zpswoh8xxuj.jpg

The next highlight was painted with Golden Yellow.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4225_zpsclafeprp.jpg

I then painted a white dot on the eye lenses using White Scar.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4226_zpsmfpheqfo.jpg

I finished the eyes with a coat of Tamiya Clear Red. This really helped to give the eyes a nice shiny/cherry look.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4227_zpsbdkjaf2f.jpg

Next up I highlighted the black areas with a 1/2 mix of Abaddon Black/Mechanicus Standard Grey.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4228_zpsdvch9mr3.jpg

Finished minus the base.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4229_zpsxby362k3.jpg

Thanks for looking ;)

The next Legionnaire. Still a WIP, but nearly finished. I hope you all like him.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4229_zps1uwwrhsj.jpg

Another amazing step by step Kizz. Always wondered how you did your bases might try it with my Iron Warriors :biggrin.:

Thanks bro! Yeah the bases are pretty simple, plus the red earth/dust would look great with the Iron Warrior's colour scheme

Hey kizz I know you want to paint up some Traitor elements in that scheme....

Kakophoni and Eidolon....

You know you wanna

Haha, nah not really :tongue.: I would like to paint this scheme again but the Traitor Emperor's Children don't really interest me that much at the moment. If I was to start a traitor army there are many other traitor Legions that I find far more interesting such as IW, AL, NL, SoH etc.

That was a great step by step Kizz! Going straight to my friend who's doing EC. Would you be willing to do one for your wolves when you do one again? They have one of the best schemes I've seen someone do.

Thanks bro! I hope your friend finds it useful/interesting :smile.: I'm going to endeavour to take step by step pics each time I try a new colour scheme from now on. I'm not sure when/if I'll get around to painting another wolf, but I could easily give you a break down of the colours if you wanted.

Thanks for looking

I'd really appreciate a breakdown and techniques if thats possible.

I've just rebased and weathered the Black Templar character that I painted up a few months ago. Although the mini isn't supposed to represent a particular character from the novel, it was inspired by ADB's awesome Helsreach. His original base was supposed to represent a boarding action fought durring the naval battel over Armageddon (in which High Marshal Helbretch was the overall Imperial commander), but after painting up the Salamander marine I knew that I had to rebase and weather the Black Templar. Now he fits in better with the Salamander and Blood Angel. He even has the Armageddon Crusade heraldry on his armour :D

The Armageddon bros! Where you at Ghazghkull?!

No worries bro. I started off with a Chaos Black spray undercoat. The armour was base coated with Mechanicus Standard Grey, washed with Nuln Oil and highlighted with Mechanicus Standard Grey. The weathering was done by sponging on Abaddon Black and then Leadbelcher. The gold is Retributor Armour, washed with Agrax Earthshade, and highlighted with Runefang Steel. The metal areas are Leadbelcher, washed with Nuln Oil, and highlighted with Runefang Steel. The red is Khorne Red, washed with Nuln Oil, and highlighted with Blood Red.

Aha! So Ultramarine confirmed! Makes me happy :biggrin.:

Nice to see the tutorial for the sallie, I learned something new. I've always been using water for thinning washes and it never came out right. Now I know why.

I'll see if I can do some more work on the Ultramarine later today. Yeah, if you mix water with washes they can dry in a kind of 'grainy' way. With a proper thiner you get the same result as using a wash regularly, but obviously thiner.

Thanks for looking ;)

They all look great, but the Black Templar is just an amazing conversion and has a great paintjob.

EDIT: Shoot! I almost forgot to ask: What decal sheet is the skull decal on the salamander from?

Edited by GrandMagnus

Wow. That templar is indeed made of top notch nineties chique. Very, very characterful. :wub.:

You seem to be able to capture the feel of every Legion and Chapter, kizz. May I ask: how do you come up with your recipes. Like, what's your process? Do you just muck about and is it sheer talent, or do you sit and think and make testers? I know you have some general techniques that are featured in all your models - like the black-lining, the chipping, the sponging and the weathering. So... yeah. Enlighten us. give us a peek behind the curtain. :

Thanks for the kind words, everybody :smile.:

Thanks bro! I had a lot of fun with the Templar. Both decals on the Salamander are from the standard space marine decal sheet. Please note that I'm not sure how much the sheet has changed since the Tactical Squad bow was updated. The decals that I've used were from an older sheet.

Hell yeah.

Thanks dude!

I'm in love with that cream cape! How'd you achieve that? That's easily one of the Templar models I've seen, and the conversion is top-notch.

Thanks a lot bro! I can't remember the exact process, but I'm pretty sure I used Screaming Skull and Steel Legion Drab for the cape.

Not sure what i am going to do with myself when you stop doing these one-offs.

Also i tried your imperial fist recipe on a lamenter yesterday. I might tru to do my army in that style. Thank you!

Hahaha, I guess I better keep going then... Good to hear that the scheme worked on you Lamenter.

Oh my! That salamander and accompanying tutorial are fantastic! That BT is also dressed to the nines! He looks exactly like what an enhanced human warrior-monk should look like!

Thanks a lot bro! Glad you like the Templar and Salamander.

This thread is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I just caught on the other week.
Bravo and thanks for the tutorials!

Spectacular work mate

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying the thread.

Thanks a lot mate.  I hope you decide to do more Wolves as I really love your take on them.

No worries, dude! Good luck with the scheme.

Hahaha, thanks bro. I always try to add some character to my minis, I don't just want my Templar to be a black and white marine or my Emperor's Children to be purple and gold legionaries. I don't have as much time to read these days, but I used to keep up fairly well with most of the fluff and I feel that an appreciation of the background of each of the Chapters/Legions and the 30k/40k setting in general is key to creating characterful minis. I put a lot more thought into building characterful minis than I put into paint schemes and recipes.

Regarding recipes: I don't really give them a whole lot of consideration most of the time. Usually I can look at a particular scheme and know how to replicate it fairly easily. Take the Templar for example. I know how to paint black, white, red, steel, gold, cream, and flesh. So I just put the various parts together to paint the particular scheme. I'd put this down to experience rather than any particular talent or skill. Space Marines in particular don't really require too much creativity/innovation. Their schemes have been set for years and it's pretty easy to choose the right paints to use. Like you said, I pretty much use the same techniques across all of the minis that I paint so I already know how to achieve most of the effects that I need to paint any flavour of marine. This is made even easier by the relative simplicity of my painting style/technique.

Painting models from different factions/games sometimes requires a bit more thought and consideration. For example when I was working on my Warriors of Chaos army (Fantasy) there was a bit more freedom. Obviously there was still some conventions to be aware of (eg. Khorne = red/brass/black, Tzeentch = blue/silver/yellow/purple... etc), but in general there was a bit more freedom regarding the particular shade used. The fleshy areas of Nurgle minis in particular are fairly open to interpretation. My High Elves were fairly standard in their colour scheme although they were excellent for developing my skills in regard to painting faces/hair/gems/armour/robes etc.

I do update my techniques from time to time, my recent use of weathering being a prime example, but in general my techniques have developed incrementally over 15+ years, so I've got a fairly thorough understanding of both my abilities and limitations. I suppose the next big step for me would be to buy an airbrush and learn how to use it. That would totally change the way I paint minis and would definitely be the biggest development in my technique/methodology.

Thanks again

Cool beans. thanks for the exhaustive answer! I can get behind your reasoning for sure. And I get that you know how to paint red, black, green etc. My question was however, more aimed at the fact that you seem to achieve the perfect tones of those colours for the specific legion. You can paint green, but I´m sure your Dark Angel´s green will look far different from that of your Salamander. Likewise for the blue of the upcoming ultramarine versus the blue of your Night Lord, and the upcoming Word Bearer´s red versus that of your Blood Angel. Should I assume you just know those tones from experience, or is there something else? :) Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

All most there with the Ultramarine. He just needs to be weathered and based :)

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4268_zpshhbpcdan.jpg

I've also made a good start on the next legionary, a Raven Guard. Hopefully I'll be able to finish both legionnaires tomorrow.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I suppose it's experience most of the time, but sometimes I do have to experiment or take a risk. For example when painting the Ultramarine I knew that the standard base colour for the XIII Legion is Macragge Blue, but I wanted to achieve a more vibrant blue than the standard GW colour scheme so I added some Enchanted Blue, which is a much richer colour. I wasn't entirely sure how it would turn out because Macragge and Enchanted Blue are to quite different shades of blue. Macragge is fairly 'soft' and is quite 'grey' in tone, were as the Enchanted blue is far more vibrant. In the end I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but at the start I wasn't one hundred percent confident about how it would go. The Salamander by contrast was pretty straight forward. I wanted to achieve something similar to the FW artwork of the Salamanders, but I also wanted it to be just a little more vibrant in colour, somewhere between the GW and FW schemes. I remembered that back in the days of the Armageddon Global Campaign that the GW Salamanders were painted using Snot Green as the base colour and I thought that Waaagh! Flesh was fairly similar to the FW scheme (maybe a little brighter), so I used the Waaagh! Flesh as the base colour and the Snot Green as the highlight. So I suppose it's mostly learned experience :)

/sigh Is there any Legion you can't paint? Seriously, everything you touch turns into gold, it makes my feeble attempts at paint seem all the more pathetic... :smile.:

+Edit : Please, you did plan a step-by-step for this one too, right?

Edited by Player 404

Ok, you just know I need the recipe for that Ultramarine.

I use a lot of sponging, don't you? It's a recipe I've never tried myself, but it seems like it gives good results so perhabs I should give it a go. How exactly do you use it and what do you use as sponge?

Gorgeous. Looking forward to the Raven Guard too. Which legions are left?

IIRC, there's I, X, XVII and XIX left now.

I have to assume Word Bearers are next, since Kizz apparently doesn't like black :smile.:
