Great work on the RG. Will be interesting to see the 3 black legions marines next to each other when done to see the difference in the blacks. I possibly appear to be a little obsessed with this but I think black is quite a versistle shade that can be achieved with a number of techniques.

Wonderful Raven Guard, KD. Just... yeah. Wonderful.

Thanks, dude! I'm pretty happy with him, glad you like him too.

I love that little Crow. Great job!

Thanks, bro!

Oh nice black. Adding battle damage to black armour is always a challenge. Either the armour turns out grey because people want to add black lines for the scratches to suggest depth, or the paint sharp grey lines under barely visible scratches and it looks weird or they add very sharp metallic tones to those scratches and again, it's the same problem as before. You have achieved a really nice balance with the armour colour and the battle damage, definetly better than anything I have ever been able to make.

Great work!

EDIT: Worth noting I hate painting black armour hehe.

Thanks bro, means a lot! The weathering powders really helped with to give the armour some depth of colour without losing it's 'blackness'. I'd highly recommend giving some weathering powders a go if you ever paint black armour again.

Man you churn these guys out! Always with great quality too

Thanks, dude! It's easy to keep them going when I get such a great response online :)

Great work Kizz :smile.: Really like how the RG turned out

Thanks, bro! Yeah, he probably turned out a little better than I expected.

Yeah, I've left the Iron Hands and Dark Angels until last so I'll be painting two different 'black' Legions one after the other. I've got a couple of ideas on how to differentiate them. Hopefully everything goes to plan.

Thanks for looking ;)

I'm in tears over the beauty of that Word Bearer. Please console me and tell me you would never be able to do an army of them in that quality. Please?

Amen to that.....

It's beauty is terribly sir. Did you use a gw shade for the red? Also the eyes are my favorite part. I just read the unburdened and that's all I can think of now...

Thanks for looking

Woah, that red! :wub.: You've once again managed to feed my indecision and make things even more complicated than they already were... In all seriousness, the color is spot-on-perfect!

Yep the wonky leg on the RG was just the camera angle... It looks epi!

Also liking the WB very much. Nice to see someone NOT do a metallic scheme for them.

The deep red is lush

Thanks everyone! I've just built the base and once it's dried off overnight I'll hopefully be able to finish him tomorrow :)

Hehe, glad you approve!

Hahaha, it would take me a very long time, and I doubt that I'd have the patience to see it through...

Thanks bro! The armour is a mix of Khorne Red and Abaddon Black washed with Druchii Violet.

That red is stunning..

Thanks mate!

Hahaha, sorry for feeding your indecision... Glad you like the red.

Damn.

Just stop, okay? Just stop being so... good. Dammit.

Also, I'm probably stealing that red as soon as you post a tutorial. Just letting you know.

I've only got a couple more to do. I might stop then... maybe... probably not...

Go for it bro! I've love to see you have a go at the red.

Glad you like the red! I've got some Clear Red, but it's such a pain to use without an airbrush, so it had to be a nonmetallic finish.

That might settle it, I'm doing WordBearers as soon as you publish your recipe if I manage something halfway decent out of it... :smile.:

As an aside, was that purity seal meant to remain black? The color seems somewhat flat, no?

I need to find a way to turn this pic into a wallpaper of some sort... :wub.: Edited by Player 404

Sorry people, I totally forgot to post the Raven Guard step by step... my bad.

For some reason I can't find the picture of the under-coated mini. Not that it is all that import. It's just a coat of Chaos Black spray.

After the initial under-coat I dry brushed the armour with a 2/1 mix of Abaddon Black and Mechanicus Standard Grey. I kept this dry brush fairly light because I wanted it to be pretty subtle.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4270_zpsphq7bcij.jpg

I then washed the mini with Nuln Oil to tone down the grey a bit.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4271_zps5xmnvxg7.jpg

Next up I neatened up the armour with some of the original dark grey mix used to edge highlight some parts of the armour

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4273_zpsferlkzwo.jpg

All of the steel areas were painted Leadbelcher.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4274_zpsjbchxdze.jpg

I then used Balthazar Gold to add some detail to a few areas of the mini. I chose Balthazar Gold because it is a bit darker and more subdued than some of the other GW golds, and I wanted to keep the Raven Guard fairly understated compared to most of the other Legions that I've painted so far.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4275_zpshhxo5nnp.jpg

Next up I gave the Leadbelcher a wash with Nuln Oil. Usually I'd use a single coat of the Nuln Oil, but because I wanted to keep the colours muted I applied a second coat. The gold was washed with Agrax Earthshade. I also added the Veteran's stripe on the helmet. I used a 2/1 mix of White Scar and Celestra Grey.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4276_zps9le5to1a.jpg

The eyes: I started off with Blood Red on the lens and below the lens to great a slight 'glow' effect. I made sure to keep a thin black line around the circumference of the eye.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4277_zpsm6knzffj.jpg

I then highlighted the eyes with Troll Slayer Orange.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4278_zpsqynw8ra8.jpg

The eyes were finished off with a coat of Tamiya Clear Red.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4279_zpsvawt7zub.jpg

I then painted the shoulder insignia using the White Scar/Celestra Grey Mix. The great thing about free handing over black armour is that any mistakes are easily corrected with some carefully applied Abaddon Black.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4280_zpsa36chshq.jpg

Legion symbol was a real pain to paint. In the end I relied on the sponge weathering and weathering powders to mostly obscure the icon because I wasn't really happy with it.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4281_zpspvjq8cjx.jpg

Next up I highlighted the silver and gold with Runefang Steel. I also started with the sponge weathering. I started by sponging Abaddon Black over the white details. Usually I sponge most panels of the armour, but because the black weathering would really show up on the black armour, I limited the sponging to the white details.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4283_zps8y6uypih.jpg

I finished him off by sponging some Leadbelcher onto the edges of the armour and around damaged areas. The trick with the metallic sponging is to keep it fairly limited. It's easy to get carried away and use to much Leadbelcher.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4284_zpszpabvtoq.jpg

Last of all I glued him to his base and applied the weathering powders. As usual I use Forgeworld's Aged Rust and Black Soot. In the case of the Black Soot I actually used it to tone down some of the metallic sponging and the white free hand as well as adding some soot stains to the power pack exhausts. The powders were sealed with a coat of matt varnish spray.

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l522/kizzdougs/DSCN4298_zpsqrdloj0x.jpg

I the end the Raven Guard was much quicker and easier to pain than many of the other Legions. I often see people complaining about painting black armour, but if you make sure not to highlight to starkly and use weathering powders and sponge weathering to your advantage it can be pretty straight forward. Because of the simplicity of the scheme I'd probably be able to pump out Raven Guard marines/vehicles at a much quicker rate than I could with any other Legion. The most time/effort went into the free hand and this could easily be taken care of with some decals, and the Raven Guard happen to have a particularly nice decal sheet.

Ooomph. :wub.:

Hahaha, glad you like him!

Awesome! Now get back to your EC!

Haha, don't worry I will. I just need to paint a Dark Angel and an Iron Hand, although I'll admit I'm lacking motivation when it comes to tackling these two Legions.

Awesome work.  Will you be doing step by steps for him and the Raven Guard?

Thanks, mate! And thanks for reminding me about the Raven Guard tutorial. I had totally forgotten to post it...

The Word Bearer is finished! Hope you like him :smile.:

Hahaha, thanks Flint! Glad you like the red. I tried a bit too hard to make it different to the Blood Angels red, but then I was worried that it was going to be too dark.

So awesome, now we just need the loyalists.

FOR THE EMPEROOOOR!

Indeed!!

Nice chipping on the armour, looks most battered.

Thanks, bro! Glad you like the weathering. I was convinced that I'd taken it too far, but I turned out alright in the end.

As xoectd, he looks great. We need a proper group shot. With all of them.

Thanks, dude! I'll definitely do a bunch of groups shots once the final two Legions are done.

Yeah, the purity seal is black and it has been highlighted with Mechanicus Standard Grey. Unfortunately it doesn't show up very well in the pics...

Any chance you'll post that recipe for the black.

Beautiful models overall, I just cant seem to decide which I like most...

I assume you're talking about the Raven Guard? If not just let me know and I'll sort you out :)

Thanks for looking ;)

Fantastic work as usual Kizzdougs, loving the tutorials and group shots. I don't even know why I think this but that Word Bearer is the best one you have done, he is the perfect shade of purple-red and matches the Forgeworld book art perfectly.

I've made a start on the Veteran Breachers. I'm still not sure if I'm really happy with him at the moment, but it's a start. At the moment he is just a Palatine Blade with a fancy shield and a flamer...

Thanks mate! Like I said, I didn't really like the Word bearer until he was finished, but now he is one of my favourites too. Glad you like him :)
