Lorenzen's Abyss: Heresy, Necro & a load of other stuff

Well he's out at the end of the week so don't be too jealous, just be amused at the mugs who payed ebay prices for him! :tongue.:

bit more work on him today, trying to make him fit with my current scheme for the army but I want him to be a "showcase" model also that will pop when in a cabinet as my models tend to be quite muted and dont stand out (loken, Moloc and Typhon) though i'm happy with 3rd in the weekender painting competition.. a friend beat me to 2nd and a death guard sicaran won overall.. so i now have a goal for next year.

im thinking of doing a large portion of the thighs in brass like the adrian smith artwork.. but am unsure atm.. also the brass on the chest is not finished.. it lacks depth.

He's a stunning model and im having a lot of fun painting him so im glad you like my ivory.

colour wise im planning to stay pretty true to the artwork with a few minor deviations (gauntlets will be ivory, upper arms brass rather than whole arms brass) and slightly less red..

heres a pic of how he looks with arms and his head, which has been sunk just a little lower into his collar (shaved his neck down a touch at an angle.)

I plan on doing the face a bit paler than my normal recipe but i want to make sure his eyes are quite vibrant and pop from within the shadows of the hood.. (tall order i know)

Silence is huge.. its about 1 1/2 terminators high and the blade is 1 terminator long.. and morty himself is slightly taller than horus from their lowest foot to the top of their head

Incredible work on Mortarion!

I have been thinking about starting a small DG force for some time, however due to university, work, son, wife, no time! :P

Would you be so kind as to share a guide of how you paint your DG specifically Mortarion?

my death guard in general have a painting guide further back in this topic (page 4 i think?) but morty is an extension of that technique and is a little paler in armour colour than the rest..

the whole model is undercoated in halfords grey, then sprayed with eshin grey all over to darken the model down.. from there a zenith highlight of rakarth flesh was applied, then a higher zenith highlight of pallid wych flesh, then finally ceramite white from almost vertical.. this gave me the major gradient on his armour and picked out certain shadows naturally.

from there the model was given a coat of klear.. though any decent gloss varnish will do. i used gloss instead of my usual satin so that the washes i use in the next stage would gravitate towards the recesses more than usual and thus leave the majority of the armour pannels only slightly tinted..

using ak streaking grim and low odour thinners i gave the model a controlled oil wash leaving as much of the "ivory"/white with only a thin layer over it.

once this was dry i used a thicker concentration of streaking grime and added small streaks to his armour.. these were blended into the ivory with clean thinner and a flat brush dragging them in the desired way (up for some, down for others.. depending on how long or short i wanted them)..

after all thats dry i did very small streaks from the top of armour pannels with ceramite white and shaded the area next to his backpacks pipes with a wash of eshin grey to pick out the top of his armour and added a ceramite white highlight to the edge..

the brass of the thighs was done by mixing black ink with runelord brass highlighted up to pure runelord then given a fine highlight where the light naturally falls with runelord brass mixed with a tiny amount of vallejo model air steel.. then finally a small highlight of pure vma steel.. once that was done a very light wash of kabalite green and druchi violet were applied (less so than the chest trim) and i washed a little black ink into some of the recesses to darken them down more.

chainmail is vma steel washed with thinned down black ink and drakenhoff nightshade, adding more washes to the lower areas to create more shadow.

the orb on the front of his chest is black ink mixed with vma steel highligthed up to pure vma steel then given a light wash of drakenhoff to cool the metal colour down and make it more defined from the warm colour of the armour.. same with the pipes.

the banding on his chest is warplock bronze layered with runefang, highlighted with a mix of runefang and vma steel then washed with kabalite green and druchi purple in the recesses.

thats as far as ive got with painting him really.. id you go down this method it will leave the underside of his arms too dark.. so ive been going over the darkest areas with dawnstone, will wash it with a very light oil wash then a wash of eshin grey to get the tone to match some of the other areas of shadow on him without looking "unfinished" as it will if you leave it.

hope that wall of text isnt too difficult to read and at least partly helpful. glad you like him :)

The more I see of the Mortarion model the more I'm really starting to like it. Yours is looking great so far, the grime and dirt on the armour is fantastic.

Reading your tutorial was very insightful so thanks for posting it. :thanks:

Brilliant work Lorenzen! The level of detail and subtlety on the armour is stunning! I have to agree with the others who have commented on the adjustment to the head. You've made him look far more sinister and more in line with how I always imagined him :)

So i've finished Typhon.. He came 3rd at the Heresy Weekender painting competition, got some good feedback on him and my painting style and what to do to improve for "display" pieces..

its this feedback that got me started on morty so quickly and why im trying to push both the contrast of the model up a bit and make sure that everything pops just that little bit more (whilst keeping him fitting with my army)

next year im hoping/aiming for 1st, i have no hard feelings about 3rd the 2 guys that came above me (AridMonk's imperial fist and Drakes Sicaran) both deserved to win and it took 3 recounts to decide from what i know..

The picture is courtesy of FW hence the white background rather than my standard black and is up on their blog along with some of the other entries..

more work on Morty later ;)

Thanks guys, was a really enjoyable model to paint and even survived his first game as a fully painted model.

Need to dirty up the cloak some more (its currently not attatched) and finish off all the brass banding on him before i start to tackle his backpack/exhausts.. but hes getting there!

Nah im not a fan of NMM ive always prefered a more realistic approach to my models, though i can see its uses for banners and the like..

coming close to completion now, mainly work on the arms and the scythe still to do and a few touch ups here and there.
