Thank you!

As I still get some modelling time at work after eating my lunch I've taken the plasma command squad to the office and got them base later yesterday. Highlighting will start today. That way I have two units on tr to at once (carrying one unit back and forth to work on them at home and at work would be asking for accidents).

As I plan to use the goggled/masked heads for my 'SBS' Scions, I'm thinking about using the beret heads exclusively for artillery crew. Give them a visual element to tie them together (The n'th Artillery Company or whatever). I also want to replace the tanker-hatted chimera crew member of my first chimera with a helmeted Pistoler head to tie it to the command chimera and it's commander.

Anyway, back to ETL work.

You got some nice looking Mordians in here, and it's cool to see them in a different paint scheme.

I have one of those Warrior Priest figures myself and was thinking about using it on a conversion for my Vostroyans.

A bit of news:

I ordered my GW spray gun and a couple of cans (the maximum that's permitted in an order apparently) on April 15th. Orders usually take two weeks. Last Saturday it had been a month with no word from my local GW (where it was it be delivered to, and they usually phone or message me), so I contact them and the (very nice) staff put me on to Jpn HQ...apparently they couldn't get the cans of propellant imported (hazardous materials) and are refunding my money as a virtual gift voucher. If I do want to get the spray gun and propellant then I have to get it delivered to my house via express delivery (another 3,400 yen [about twenty quid!])..No thanks!

I'll put the voucher toward an armour order (once I've got the new eRulebook this weekend I'll make my order: probably a Russ, Manticore and a pair of Wyverns).

The five heavy weapons teams are coming along well. Greens and metallics done. Flesh tones next, then some brown for knife handles and slings, then onto squad-role markings (red/blue), grey heavily washed black for boots and then basing.

The plasma CCS is coming along well at work too.

Black armour will be worked up to shiny silver this week.

That's a bit rubbish, they should have let you know as soon as they did about it.

More tanks would be cool, as well as good for the ETL ;) I really do like your trooper's green, but you can't tell us about updates and not post pictures of them all! :P

Thanks!

Yes, perhaps the spray gun affair was a blessing in disguise as I never seem to hear anything good about it. On the other hand I don't see myself getting a proper airbrush for a while: lack of time to properly get used to it, having to drop things at a moment's notice sometimes, the noise and lack of storage space for a compressor...

Something for the future, anyway.

Did get my eRulebook ordered (and picked up Titanicus as it was half price today!).

WarriorFish, there wasn't much to show on the HWTs so I didn't bother with a photo. Will do when they're further along (minis done but bases not yet, for example).

For what it's worth, my green is:

'Hard things': Deathworld Forest basecoat, Elysian Green highlight, Athonian Camoshade heavy shading wash.

'Soft things': Elysian Green basecoat, Ogryn Camo highlight, Athonian Camoshade heavy shading wash.

By 'hard things' I mean weapon bodies, belts and belt kit, helmets, firm body armour and tanks.

By 'soft things' I mean cloth. :)

Sounds like way too much work for me :P I've not bothered with spray guns for the same reasons, it didn't take long to give the Baneblade a nice coat so I think it'd probably be more useful for fancy painting techniques and the like?

The Story of the Spray Gun hopefully nears it's end: they eventually got back to me about the virtual gift voucher and it's been ordered. It seems I'm now waiting for another email with the voucher code in it (has anyone ever had one ever messed with these GW virtual vouchers before?).

With the artillery changes in 7th and the small likelihood of me playing a game larger than 4'x4' in the foreseeable future, I'm thinking of dropping the idea of a manticore. Instead I'm going to get:

Russ Demolisher (and make it interchangeable)

Wyvern (again, interchangeable)

Scions (for suicide melta, heads for use on Wyvern, and a change from painting green!)

One tank accessories sprue (because, why not? Plus I have an idea for the officer body...)

ETL IV progress is slow but steady. Should have the five HWTs done this week, perhaps the plasma command squad too.

That leaves me with the sixteen single members of the infantry squads, the melta command squad and officer, and the standard bearer.

I might plow through the grunts first, giving me the command squad to look forward to.

Oh, doubtful I'll get the Scions, Russ and Wyvern done for the ETL, though I'm not overly bothered. I'd rather take my time with them.

I do have other models for a potential second vow. We'll see how much time remains after the first is done.

I'm afraid not, but if it's automated then you should get the email right away. If you've not got it after 24 hours then you should chase them up.

I want to get some tanks fora third vow but I'm conscious of impending time constraints too, and I don't know if I can resist painting them before ETL IV :P

Thankfully I got the email with the code in it a few hours after posting here. Have already spent it!

Some more progress, namely the two IS HWTs are done:

Autocannon team:

I'm happy with how the scribblescript came out here and there, and the spent shell casing (though where the spotter is kneeling, he'd get slapped in the face with hot brass every time the cannon fires! :biggrin.:)

Now to finish the three mortar teams...

Thanks!

Here's a WIP of the toffs members of the plasma company command squad.

med_gallery_63428_8145_8133.jpg

Three of the veterans have parchment tied to their scabbards, with dotscript (I've been experimenting and many, many dots gives me what looks like finer text than the scribblescript I used to do [e.g. on the Psyker Battle Squad]...it also seems to be kinder to the pen).

Boots need a couple of coats of black wash, plasma guns/pistols need dark green paint (and light green for the padded under-handles) and of course the coils doing in blue. Officer's hair needs doing, and his shoulder pads are currently all yellow but I'm going to redo them as silver trimmed with yellow like the rest of the squad.

I'm thinking about trying to add some `broken glass` to the bases: finely cut plastic sheeting (from a mini clam pack). The question is: how to stick it down? Superglue would mist it...a tiny bit of thinned PVA perhaps? Or gloss varnish over it and the base, then Lamian Medium selectively to matt the non-glass bits again?

And some progress on the mortar teams. Just the blue to add to their epaulets/hatbands/trouser stripes, and perhaps a bit of colour to the mortar bombs held by two of the loaders.

Grass and more `stuff` will be added to the bases after the crews are attached. Two currently have fallen walls, one has a bit of standing wall with a burned up poster on one side and some vague graffiti on the other...

med_gallery_63428_8145_6649.jpg

gallery_63428_8145_13696.jpg

I see a reoccurring theme on the walls :P I'm not sure about how you could do the glass bits, but I think with a sufficiently small bit of super glue it might be ok? I've never had problems with misting when I've glued bits, I think giving it room to "breath" helps. I like the scribbles too, I think I'll use that method with mine when I get round to it :)

The graffiti cracks me up. Great work on the walls and the veterans look great. For the poster on the front of the wall, is that hand done or is that some sort of decal? I tried something similar on one of my HW Teams and I wasn't quite satisfied with how it turned out.

Thanks.

The poster is a printed one.

Let me track down the link...

Here.

I used some more in my terrain thread:

Here

No progress to report from over the weekend. Had a nice family weekend instead (and enjoyed watching Moto GP last night!).

Should be able to finish the mortar teams and plasma command this week. Fingers crossed.

I did notice, when putting away the two finished HWTs into my carrycase, that their bases are lighter than the ones I did in the past (due to using a different paint, I can only presume). Will have to give them a second coat of Agrax. That should fix it.

My local two GWs (well, the only two GWs in the country) have painting competitions going on now: one Astra Militarum at Jimboucho (they have one for each new codex a bit after it's released) and Nakano has it's summer painting comp open now. Since I won one category at Nakano's Winter and Spring competitions I'm going to enter the Summer one too. Conversions are, this time, a must, so I'm thinking my priest Invulnerable Bede for the Single Mini, my command Chimera for the Large Mini. Perhaps some of the Psyker Battle Squad (I can't bring myself to use the new name) for the third and final category: Unit. I'm going to look over all three and see what I can add (some more highlights to Bede's armour, for example, perhaps some fine tattoos to the PBS) before submitting them.

For the AM one I think I'll submit either my sniper SWS or, if they'll accept it, my Young Marbo diorama... Will have another look at both too.

The mortar HWS is done:

As is the plasma command squad.

I'm particularly happy with the very fine dotscript on weapons and the back of the veterans' armour.

The OSL (a bit of reflection on armour) came out alright. I'm a bit of of practice.

And I'm reasonably happy with the broken glass on their bases.

Will be working on the 16 other members of the two infantry squads at work, and the melta CCS and standard bearer at home.

  • 2 weeks later...

First up, work on my two infantry squads.

Their highlights, in a way not entirely dissimilar to their very lives, are quick and rough

med_gallery_63428_8145_27567.jpg

As he's the only sergeant with a chainsword I'm thinking of going for classic hazard stripes on it.

And the other squad:

gallery_63428_8145_57303.jpg

Close up of the exchanged pistol.

med_gallery_63428_8145_29975.jpg

Highlights will be toned down with Athonian Camoshade wash next week, then it's on to skin and metal, finally boots and details...and bases.

And work on my melta command squad:

gallery_63428_8145_23631.jpg

Some weapon close-ups with dotscript.

gallery_63428_8145_26444.jpg

gallery_63428_8145_29042.jpg

Standard bearer.

Never using real string for rope again! Next time I'll use wire, or GS.

CO

med_gallery_63428_8145_34725.jpgmed_gallery_63428_8145_74074.jpg

Still a fair bit to do on him.

And a teaser of something else I have in the works, perhaps for a second vow...

gallery_63428_8145_5341.jpggallery_63428_8145_11701.jpg

Thanks, though honestly the dotscript is extremely easy and quick to do. Just takes a bit of patience and practice.

The melta CCS and CO are coming along nicely. I have an idea -stolen from another B&Cer- for how I'm going to do the CO's sword...

In other news I picked up my Demolisher Russ, Wyvern, Scions, Cities of Death sprue and Tank accessories sprue today! I doubt I'll get any of them done in time for the ETL though.

And in bigger news:

My special weapons squad of sniper-spotter teams won GW Jimboucho's Astra Militarum painting contest, with 28 out of 70 votes! :D Hoorah!

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=644029575674901&substory_index=0&id=120622048015659

Particularly glad to have won something with a unit from this army.

I also put my command chimera, Invulnerable Bede and six of my PBS into the three categories of GW Nakano's Summer Painting Comp. Final day is the 28th. Wish me luck!

That's good to hear, I've got some more stuff coming but alas there will be delays so I can't make any decisions yet. Apart from that still got plenty to do on vow 2 so I shouldn't be counting any chickens :P

Congratulations on winning, very well deserved! :D Good luck for the up coming ones too, I hope to hear more good news soon :tu:

Thanks!

Had a busy weekend (though not from a modelling POV). The only bit of vow work I got done was to make the tactical auto-reliquary. I'll get a WIP shot of it up soon.

I did get some other modelling/painting done...which involved green (both stuff and paint)...but with the green paint going on the skin of the model, it is not B&C-friendly  It's for GW Jimboucho's next Codex-based modelling/painting comp. Got until the 5th to finish it.
