Shrineworld Garrison (what’s still legal??)

WarriorFish, you'll be glad to hear that I've decided to keep on with the 16 remaining members of the ISs at work (they're coming along well...might try to get a WIP photo tomorrow), and that painting the greenskin for the next comp is giving me a lot of practice painting infantry-level camo (I'm doing a Bloodaxe commando clad in forest, winter, urban and desert camo -dressed for all occasions-, lugging a rucksack of stolen Imperial plans and loot...with a leg bloodily blown off, for use as an objective marker).

Tempted to add some Alpine troops to Kierdale's World in the future now. Cadian hazardous environ gear, skis strapped to their backs, winter camo...another SWS sniper team perhaps...

Good to hear! The temptation to do all sorts of camo patterns is strong... I'm moving desk locations soon at work soon so I might get a better spot for lunch time painting but on the flip side I might no longer be able to access the B&C so readily :(

Four melta gunners are done.

And still WIP:

Standard bearer progress.

gallery_63428_8145_17224.jpg

I wonder if an Aquila decal on there would sit properly. Bit scared to try, but...nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Old Man Kiedale himself, with the tactical auto-reliquary.

Will be redoing the green gem in the sword hilt as I'm doing a ruby in the las pistol hilt and `red on the right, green on the left` I realised is a bit too airplaney. I'll make it a sapphire.

Even in death, Tiberius still gets to wear his medals.

With my Ork piece done for this weekend's comp, I'm back 100% on my Guard.

Cool, Guard is where you belong - green skins at the barrel of your gun ;) The standard is looking good, perfect for a nice transfer or two I reckon. The varnish coat beforehand also lets you remove the transfer quickly if it doesn't want to play :)

How do you mean?

I figured if a decal is messed up (and it's not possible to refloat it off the model) then I'd have to either paint over it or try to scrape it off...potential taking the paint beneath with it. You mean the varnish will sufficiently protect the paint if I try to scrape the decal off?

Well, Invulnerable Bede, the Psyker Battle Squad and command Chimera failed to bring home any wins at GW Nakano's conversion/painting comp. (though my Blood Axe commando is in the GW Jimboucho Ork competition...judging [by voting] ends today).

GW Nakano's next painting comp will be at the end of September (and this time with no limitations [conversions/no conversions, for example]). I'm not sure what Jimboucho's next one will be. As they're usually linked to the latest codex/army release I might expect Bretonians...though they never bothered with Wood Elves, going straight from Guard to Orks. Only doing the comp for 40k?

Yet another event I'm interested in is their 'Battlefield Plot' one. A bit if a weird name but that's what it is (in katakana). Basically a battle diorama on a 20cm x 20cm base (for which they're pushing the WHFB movement tray. No pun intended). I'm tempted to do a bit of a trench with some of my guardsmen firing by ranks from it, a sergeant calling out the order, commissars and a priest looking on, with genestealers (as I have some spare) and some termagants (if I can get a pushfit box) charging them (some being cut down by fire, of course).

Should be able to do that -the majority being completed minis- by September 7th (the deadline).

My two infantry squads, the melta gunners and officer are done...and I should have the standard bearer and tactical auto reliquary completed in an evening or two's work.

No photos until they're all done!

With my weekends usually as busy as they are, and a business trip coming up, I doubt I can get more than a couple more minis done for the ETL: a pair of (lord) commissars.

I won GW Jimboucho's painting contest. :D

FB Link

There should be, on GW Jimboucho's FB page there, a link to the event gallery so you can see the other entries.

Apparently next will not be a codex-based painting challenge, but a kitbash/conversion challenge. In the past, IIRC, people did the bashing at the event in the store then left their creations to be judged over the following week. I doubt I'd be able to make it to the store for the event (weekends being family time), plus if I'm going for GW Nakano's contest and Jimboucho's Battlefield Plot...I don't think I'll try for the kitbash challenge.

Back to IG-events: should have my vow completed today or tomorrow.

Through the Warp, to near and far,

To Tallarn, Lethe and Ultramar,

The Emperor points and we obey,

Through the Warp and far away.

My first vow is complete.

All together:

gallery_63428_8145_13415.jpg

Not sure why the image came out so small. I took it at the same time as the rest.

And close-ups of the units I have not posted so far:

The two infantry squads.

med_gallery_63428_8145_72816.jpg

I now have enough of the guardsmen in the aiming pose that I could have a full squad of them...and might do so for that diorama...

gallery_63428_8145_20084.jpg

Sergeants.

gallery_63428_8145_6504.jpg

If I get another infantry squad (and I probably will at some point so I can have a full platoon of five squads) I'll have to think about how to convert the sergeant more (lefthand figure here, aiming). Perhaps removing the sword and replacing it with a different hand weapon. Perhaps simply a different style of sword. I've removed the sword from one before and it was quite a pain in the rear to do...

Melta command squad with officer with blade of conquest and tactical auto-reliquary of Tiberius.

`He` has his medals on his side, for even in death duty does not end (nor do rewards!).

Note the on/off buttons on the back, for when the (fleshbod) officer gets sick of the autoreliquary countermanding his orders.

gallery_63428_8145_34723.jpggallery_63428_8145_25992.jpgmed_gallery_63428_8145_39240.jpg

And finally the standard bearer.

med_gallery_63428_8145_7572.jpgmed_gallery_63428_8145_10572.jpg

Used battle damage on the standard itself to cover up where Lahmian Medium blurred and downright near erased a lot of my dottext! I think it came out nice in the end though. The other side of the standard is, aside from burn damage, blank. I'm keeping that to decorate with honours earned in games.

And I have made my second vow:

Vow 2:

1 lord commissar

- Emperor's Benediction (heirloom of conquest bolt pistol)

- Power weapon (scourge)

85pts

1 lord commissar

- Emperor's Benediction (heirloom of conquest bolt pistol)

70pts

Very much looking foward to painting something other than green grunts for a bit!

Well done on your win Kier, and keep those excellent models coming! :D Unfortunate that I'm returning to the B&C after a while and quickly ran out of likes :P I like the sound of your next entry, it should be pretty cool. Reminds me of that old story of Guardsmen beating down 'nids in CC like it was going out of style!

Thanks, all!

My second vow is complete, and with it my efforts for ETL3.

Two years ago in the first ETL I Chaos had two vows out of me (as back then we had no HH forum).

Last year my family had me!

This year the IG gets two vows out of me.

Next year...?

Anyway, commissars Smith and Jones.

gallery_63428_8145_23089.jpg

Jones' pistol, being holstered, got a gold grip to show it's the Emperor's Benediction (when it needs to be  ).

Jones' pistol, instead, to show it as a relic heirloom...got a 2nd Ed colour scheme. :biggrin.:

Fantastic work as ever, the whip looks great - very fitting for a Commissar too. I love the details such as the red warning blocks on the power pack dials and the scribble script etc, they make a big difference to the overall model along with the bases and dirt. I've greatly enjoyed your ETL WIP, I'll be looking forward to your next work too :smile.:

I've thought a little about next year, it's unlikely that I'll be able to resist completing my Guard models before ETL IV and/or have enough models to make a decent contribution. Maybe I'll have to vow for the Marines instead, still got a fair few kits that need work for them.

Thanks.

I was torn over what colour to do the scourge. First I tried red glaze, intending to make it look hot...but it just looked bloody in an unconvincing way. Then tried blue...and it looked good, but I couldn't help thinking 'Space Wolves'. I could have had it as a gift from a past campaign alongside those mongrels, but I'm a bit of a fan of the Sons of Prospero.

It was then that I spotted my old Transformers original cartoon DVDs and remembered Megatron's energon flail.

Thus the scourge had to be purple.

I'm now working on the diorama:

I. Genestealers and termagants (three and five respectively). Won't be posting images of them, of course, until the diorama is a completed piece.

II. Plinth and Navigator statue. Plinth made from the Cities of Death sprue, Navigator is the big Inquisition mini. I'm doing him rather than the Preacher statue as I want to do the preacher right. Hence the navigator is practice.

III. Base itself. 20cm x 20cm is small, so I think I'll have the action going diagonally. Statue in one corner, trench with guard squad dug across at its foot, bolt pistol commissar stood atop the trench before them. As for the no-man's land in front of the trench I'll have to see how much space is left: if I can fit in a bit of a crater, perhaps dried up river bed...

Will post some WIP images of the board as soon as I can.

With the ETL done for me, I'm hoping to do AM modeling at work:

I have an enginseer, two Primaris psykers, a Vendetta, a Russ, a Wyvern and a squad of Scions to do...oh, and my shotgun veterans to finish off...and 11 rough riders. Actually that last item might be high on the list...

...and get some work done on my Slaanesh warband (the Psychopomps) at home as they're not likely to be 'safe for work' (nothing too naughty, I'd just rather not have to explain).

Got the statue for the diorama complete...

gallery_63428_6841_7235.jpg

The name plate says `Di Cavagni`, taken from the name of the navigator in the short story `Lacrymata` by Storm Constantine in the old anthology `Deathwing`: Solonaetz Di Cavagni.

gallery_63428_6841_6807.jpg

And no statue would be complete without...

Oh, the traffic cone won't be staying on his head when I submit the diorama. Cones placed on the heads of statues isn't...erm...as traditional...in Japan as it is back home in Blighty. :biggrin.:

The cone needs to stay ;)

Seriously though, I love what you've done with the old Inquisitor model (which does get the old grey matter running) but I have one question...

How the hell did you get the metal on the statute looking so real?

It really looks the part. Right amount of weathering and everything.

Liking your guard too (though I've always preferred the fatigues look over dress uniform) and it's great to see Brian Nelson's Commisars given some love.

Hehe, the cone looks great! I think the Japanese equivalent might be a tie worn around the head? :P

The statue looks fantastic, like forte said you'll need to describe how you did it! Is that the GW technical paint you used for the weathering?

Thanks!

The statue was done with a black sprayed undercoat, then a heavy drybrush of Balthasar Gold. That got a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade then I drybrushed Hashut Copper over that, a little lighter than the Balthasar (the two colours are almost the same to my eyes, though the copper may be a little lighter. Partially I just wanted to use up some of the older [copper] paint).

Had I more time I would have liked to have experimented with a Sepia wash and then a further Copper drybrush but the clock is against me. I did try drybrushing a little Burnished Gold on the hood rim and other extremeties, but I didn't like it much and it hardly shows, so I won't bother when I do another statue.

And yes, I used Nihilakh Oxide for the verdigris. I thought I may have done it a little too heavily, but I looked at a lot of images of old bronze statues and they get pretty black/green...plus you two seem happy with it! Like in GW's original video about how to use it, I put the Oxide on heavily and used tissues to wipe it off (in a downward motion). In areas where it gathered too thickly in crevices I used another, dry, brush to wipe some volume away carefully. On the back it came out a bit streaky in the middle of a curved area, but I put that down to rainfall

When I heard that the Specialist Games were on the way out I snapped up the =][= Navigator and Preacher (to be done as Father Kierdale himself, now I've had practice on the Navigator) to use as statues, and Necromunda Orlock and Goliath gangers (would've got more had there still been stock :( ) for IG/cultists. I have some plans for the Goliaths over in my Slaanesh/Psychopomps thread...

Did the first test-positioning for the diorama just now.

First up, the lay of the land:

gallery_63428_8145_22039.jpg

Trench top left for infantry squad. Bit of a rise top right for Navigator statue. A few pieces of I-bar sticking out of the ground in front of the trench. Will add some razorwire if time permits, likewise ammo boxes, spades and other `furniture`.

The thin depression running left to right half way down the board will be a stream.

Three pieces of tree bark you can see will be done up as large rocks (a-la my melta command squad a few pages back).

How everyone will be placed:

gallery_63428_8145_4845.jpggallery_63428_8145_30218.jpggallery_63428_8145_11451.jpg

med_gallery_63428_8145_159582.jpg

The foremost genestealer's mouth has been drilled all the way through to the back of it's head and I carefully peeled away the skin from the exit hole as the commissar is casually executing it.

gallery_63428_8145_13287.jpg

I'll be adding gore splattered across it's back, and a spurt or two (superglue allowed to bead on an eyebrow) from the hole itself.

All to be done by Sept 7th...

EDIT:

Oh, the blood will look something like this:

med_gallery_63428_8145_10334.jpg

Only not red.

I can't show any more of this particular mini as it's not B&C friendly. If anyone is interested...

And the genestealers and termagants will be done in original Space Hulk colours of purple skin and blue carapace. Pale purple (mauve I guess) for blood. Some non-B&C friendly images in my Flickr...
