The Nine Legions - Started Dreadclaws

Ironically, Alpha Legion would be my second choice... Great minds think alike!

Is it true that some people build AL armies using the loyalist codex because of their "suspicious" motivations?

I'm thinking of just scraping off the roofing tile at work and using that pain in the ass to sweep crap for my basing.

Geektom: It's because the AL operates behind enemy lines as a saboteur and force multiplier by not being in the eye most of the time.

Plus the Loyalist dex is still better.

I was in fact going to do that at one point. Trouble is, I'm too used to thinking of my stuff as Chaos Marines, and the cognitive dissonance was too great. The game I used my Berzerkers as Space Wolves was so confusing, I never tried it again.

Next batch of Cultists:

I'm thinking of hitting them with a wash just to get a bit of depth, especially on the grey. Maybe a diluted Nuln Oil?

Yea, hit them with a thin shade, and then go from there. Will help with the highlights later on.
I often shade before going about with my painting, but that is to pick out details I otherwise would miss.

Given the timeframes now involved for me to finish this Call, shading will have to wait. This is that previous lot finished:

And here's the next batch:

For something slightly different, the first 15 Cultists all in a mob.

I'm thinking yellow for the next gun/hat colour.

Yellow it was indeed:

Purple next, and for the last batch I might get a little creative, depends what models it ends up being.

First vow complete! 29 shooty cultists. What's pretty impressive is that due to the way I did the scheme, only two came out identical, and that was by accident.

Currently on the table are the three Rhinos, just to give me a bit of a break before I start in on the close combat Cultists.

I'm contemplating some freehand, but all of my brushes are knackered so I may not bother just yet.

Cheers dude. Currently working out my painting schedule for the week, unless I fit a burst in tonight it's gonna be Friday before any more gets done. Stupid work getting in the way.

Rhinos are done.

I'm really annoyed that I didn't put the doors on the same sides on all three of them, but by the time it occurred to me one was wrong.

Next up, close combat Cultists. These may not be as colourful as the shooty guys, there's a lot of bare chests on these ones.

EDIT: But first, shooty Cultist number 30. Cheeky sod was hiding in the bag.

Ok, so it's now a week since the Call ended, and other than doing the test model for a different project, I've not touched any hobby stuff. I have, however, been planning.

My planning starts with several assumptions, and some lessons learnt. The first assumption is that the ETL will start on May 1st, as it has done the last two years. That gives me basically 4 months to get the stuff I want to enter built. The second assumption is that we're gonna have a harder time of it this year because we won't have the backup of two truly huge megavows, so I'm going to have to paint more points than last year to compensate, as is everyone else.

Assumption 2.5 is that the Templars will get rolled back in to Angels of Death, as even combined we would have beaten them last year, but that'll mean more early pressure.

The lessons I have learnt are as follows:

When the chips are down and a deadline looms, I can paint with a speed I previously thought unattainable. I'd rather not have to with the ETL, but it's comforting to know that I can do it.

If I don't care about the models I'm painting, they take me longer to get around to. I painted the Cultists for the Call because it was bugging me that they didn't have paint on them, and I wanted to try the colour scheme out, but I'm not currently using them in an army list, so I don't need them. Therefore, everything I vow for the ETL will be for one of my army lists.

So, with that out of the way, my prospective vow (bearing in mind none of this is built yet except the Chosen) goes something like this:

Khorne Lord on bike with fist+claws

6 Khornate Bikers, 2x melta

10 Chosen 2x plasma 2x melta (I think that's the loadout anyway)

Sorcerer with jump pack

Brass Scorpion

All of them are going to be painted in this colour scheme:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Dragonlover63/IMG_0190.jpg

The plan for building is Scorpion first, then whatever I get the inspiration for, because the Scorpion will be the impetus for getting a case for the army to live in. However, there is an issue with the bikers: I hate painting Marine bikes. Therefore, I want to convert the bikers in one of two ways:

1) The bikes are daemonically possessed, preferably with Flesh Hounds. No idea how best to go about this. Green stuff scales on, make the fairing more reminiscent of a neck frill maybe? Also waggy tails (thanks Flint!).

2) Take the daemon engine aesthetic and apply it to the bikes, so rounded overlapping plates and angled exhausts. If I do this, I'll get some PVC pipe to make the armour from. Maybe some flesh, but the models are pretty small and I don't want to overwhelm them.

Any suggestions gratefully received, but bear in mind I have to be able to replicate it 7 times.

The Sorc is easy, just a case of sitting down with the bits one day and having a mess about.

For the Brass Scorpion, the plan is to pin and magnetise the legs so I can take it apart for ease of transport. I have the drill bits and the magnets, I just need to check if we have brass rod at work and if not get some from somewhere else, as paper clips are not gonna cut it.

*If* time and funds allow, I'm going to have a second run at the Fire Raptor and enter that as well. I ballsed up the first one and it's annoyed me, but there is no way I can salvage it. Also, with a new build I can integrate the Titan megabolter much more effectively.

That other project I mentioned? Me and the wife have decided to do a joint project, the current working title being the Heralds of Malal. I'll be building the models, she'll be painting them. That'll be in it's own log at some point, and although we're using the Imperial stuff for gaming purposes, if we've got anything built in time they'll be Chaos for ETL purposes.

So, that's my plans for the next four months. I leave you with a pic of the Chosen, as I never actually posted them up, and some fluff on my Khornate warband.

The Bone Walkers of Serjius, commonly abbreviated to the Bone Walkers, are the remnants of the 23rd Company of the World Eaters. Worn down by constant battle, they bolster their ranks with Daemon Engines, and have through necessity adopted hit and run tactics.

Trophy taking is commonplace amongst the warband, with many of the members having a particular flavour of trophy. The main example of this is Serjius himself, who is collecting a skull from a member of every Successor Chapter in the Imperium, in order to prove his superiority over what he sees as unworthy inheritors of an empire he built. He displays them from alcoves in his briefing chamber, each one personally engraved with the Chapter symbol and name, and the name of the Astartes it belonged to if this is known.

I actually remembered to take a WIP shot of something! Working on my Sorcerer, waiting for the glue to dry on the shoulder and also waiting to see if Power Spray helps shift ancient epoxy glue from an old Raptor backpack.

I'd rather reclaim stuff than have it languish in a case. Those Chosen are built from my two previous Chaos armies, a job lot I bought off someone and a bunch of Heresy-era stuff where appropriate.

I had considered giving the Sorcerer a Heresy era torso, but convenience won out in the end as I didn't fancy doing too much superglue work today on such a small model. Plus I figured the ancient jump pack was enough of a nod to this guys age.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Dragonlover63/IMG_0231.jpg

He doesn't have a name yet, but this is the guy that keeps the daemon engines running. He is also investigating the barely-known art of chronomancy at the request of Serjius, so that skulls can be harvested from Chapters that have gone extinct before he gets to them.

So, with the Sorcerer done, I move on to the biggest project I've ever attempted: a Brass Scorpion of Khorne. Firstly, the instructions are terrible. Secondly, would it have killed them to number the back plates? It's fairly obvious what goes where, but I'd have liked tangible reassurance. Thirdly... sweet gods of ruin, this is a lot of resin.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Dragonlover63/IMG_0232.jpg

Also, they seem to have sent me three scorpion cannon barrels. I can live with that. Right, time to go stick this lot in the drink.

They have not, in fact, sent three scorpion cannons, it just goes together weirdly. Like I said, crap instructions.

I've built the main body, the mawcannon is currently drying which is why it's balanced on the back leg sockets.

Four of the legs are pinned, but no magnets yet.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/Dragonlover63/IMG_0234.jpg

I have described a Brass Scorpion as two Defilers welded together and then prodded until it gets really angry before. I didn't realise how true this would be when building it. These legs are a pain to put together, would it have killed them to have placement pegs for the ball and socket joint?

  • 4 weeks later...

All the legs are now pinned, some of them are magnetised. I only put magnets in the ones that needed the extra support. The front claws aren't pinned or anything at the ball and socket joint as they aren't support limbs and they clip in pretty snug anyway. I'm gonna build the tail cannon next I think. Hell, next update will probably be everything except the armour plates, I'm leaving them off until I finish the paint job.

EDIT:

Finished other than the armour plates. If you're wondering why the tail gun looks a touch anaemic, I accidentally glued the extra barrels to one of the other guns they sent me. I figure it'll end up on a Contemptor as a Butcher Cannon at some point.

Next up... not sure. It *should* be Khorne Bikers+ Lord, but I'm waiting to see how these Khorne supplement rumours pan out.

Such a Chronic Model.  I kind of like the tail gun looking like that, It actually looks like a stinger.  I guess you could add some spice with a couple spikes or blades or something to make it look more like a conversion beamer or something, but overall I don't think it's so bad.

What are the dimensions of that model? Do you think you could take a picture of it next to your hand or something in the next update?  I'd love to see a scale item maybe a pop can or something to have a reference frame.   I've been contemplating making a FW purchase on either a Decimator engine, or one of these, and you could help a brother out! :)

Nice work on all your chaos goodness sir!
