New Army Blog: Storm Brothers (Primaris Chappy WIP on p.33)

Hey friends! I don't know if anyone will find this interesting, but I thought I would post it just in case. I have learned so much here; maybe this will be helpful to someone else.

Several folks have mentioned that my army came together quickly: it didn't feel that way to me, but looking back, it is true that I have learned a lot of short cuts over the many years I was painting Fantasy that have helped immensely with the Storm Brothers.

I thought I would share the step-by-step process I will go through to build my next 10 man Tactical Squad, and the time spent on each step.

When painting a group of models, I prefer a modified "paint on the sprue" technique. I don't paint the pieces all the way to completion on the sprue, but I find it extremely helpful to lay down base coats that way-- plus occasionally doing drybrushing, first highlight coats and washes on the sprue.

The only thing I don't do this way is legs-- for my scheme they are 3 colors (purple lower legs, grey upper legs, yellow knees/crotch) and I am not airbrush skilled enough to do that on the sprue. So I add them to the bases and primer them like this:

After that, the next thing I do is look for ways to efficiently divvy up the sprues by base-coat color. Even with a complicated scheme like mine, it is fairly easy to do:

Torsos and Shoulder Pads:

Arms:

Heads and Power Packs:

Weapons, which I simply primer black instead of my usual dark grey:

Now, many people don't paint on the sprue because of mold lines and marring where the pieces are still attached. That is an real concern, no doubt.

What I have found from doing it often however, is that the time saved with this process more than makes up for doing the touch ups afterwards. Also, since starting my SM army, I have noticed how much better the quality of the plastics have gotten (don't get me started on Failcast)-- mold lines are not nearly the issue they used to be.

I look for the worst ones I can see while they are still on the sprue and use either a narrow x-acto blade or a small file to take care of them.

After primer, I break out this guy:

If you don't have one, I really recommend it (even if it *is* from GW...). No, it is not as good as a real airbrush, but don't think of it that way-- just look at it as a "base coat delivery system" and you will thrilled with the results.

I also find some sort of clamp is very handy for holding the sprues while spraying. I like these little guys because I got 10 for $0.99 at a discount store:

After some quick sprays I have this:

Total time, start to finish: 1 hour 10 minutes

Next steps: Drybrushing weapons and painting 1st layer yellow. I will time it and show you the results!

Coming soon: new Terminator pics!

Well I'm glad you enjoy that... thing... that GW produces, me I'd rather peel my face off than use it. I've got a Badger 105 Patriot, love that airbrush and I highly recommend it if you ever decide to step your airbrush game up.

Hate to hijack your thread Geektom, but Heinrich can I ask you what compressor you're using with the patriot 105?

I am working on finishing the Khan on Jetbike again-- here is where it is now. Not terribly photogenic-- I think there is too much going on to get a good angle. Also, I am not happy with the powerlance, but I am stuck for another idea, or what it is even that I don't like.

C&C welcome, as always!

Until I can get a real airbrush it will have to do!

Thanks everyone for the nice words- finishing the Vanguard Vets, then the army shot.

After that I am doing the tactical unit I sprayed, another bike unit, and then either some land speeders or a Storm Talon.
