Funny thing is, I organised something like Zone Mortalis back in '98 at GW Plaza (Oxford Street). The original idea never really happened but it was set on chaos ship with each corner being dedicated to a different god and the whole table being based on the 8 pointed star. The four build up games happened and bits were getting built but then people move to different stores and it never really got finished which was a huge shame. The idea was due to me seeing Event Horizon in the cinema.

Such a nasty movie! :)

You let me Buurrrnnnn!

I think I can vaguely  remember that board. Was it set up near the front of the store?

Natanael, your board looks really good, I always think that it would be a good idea to make a multi level one but can't even get a flat one sorted!

Sadly, it was never near completion. Other things slowed it all down. The four Chaos characters which I converted for it were on display and used in the themed games before hand.

Khorne Lord with a two handed chain axe from Dante.

Nurgle as an Asmodi with the obvious DA markings removed.

Tzeentch was the DA librarian special character.

And Slaanesh was the old four armed champion with a bolter and chaos backpack added.

Sadly, all four went missing from the Hamersmith store after I worked there.

I was thinking about making some rooms of the ZM to represent the different gods of chaos. Might have to do that now, as a forte-tribute ;) I really like the idea of using DA as the basis for nurgle. I Think that when I get some more Money I'll do a small 500p warband of just that. Pre heresy colours and a minimum och mutations, and everyone looking like a mini-mortation =)

@ muggs & deatchspectresgt7: My tiles are 30x30cm, and the walls are 10cm high. The multiple levels are just the tiles put on top on one another. Since all of them are quite lightweight and all of them are the same hight, it's easy to play both. I'm gonna have to add ladders here and there to represent the climb to the next level, but other then that it shouldnt be too hard to play the game in at least two levels. You can Always just lift the upper ones off if it is hard to reach. =)

And thank you all for the comments. Keeps me motivated. I'll put some more pics up tonight when there is more done. I have the aforementioned friend coming over tonight, and the wife is out. So it really is building and playing time =) More adventures for Squad Ludendorf.

Oh. That is a really cool idea. Now you are making me do a serious multi-level board =)

I Think, to make it work, I'd need to plan ahead quite a bit, and the 2nd level will not be as modular as the first one. Also, it cant cover the whole first level, since then it will be impossible to play on both levels. It will have to be only parts of the table that will be different levels. Maybe it would be possible to add some kind of "legs" to the parts supposed to be 2nd lvl, so that you could stand them on the "ground floor" and they would be elevated a few inches, making it easier to move your minis about underneath them.

I dont have that much space either, but with this set-up the ZM-board is quite easy to store. I just stack the tiles on top of each other in a corner of the closet. Gonna get trickier as I get more done, but in theory they should not fill that much space, tbh. You only need like 9 tiles to play, with Everything else being extra and allowing for larger games with more Points or more people.

Well, imo it is very possible to play at 3x3, if you are just two players. But I'm going for a 6x4 when I'm finished. And now, apparently, 6x4 with the possibility for at least 8 tiles (the short edges) in two levels.

@thamier Thank you. I'll keep posting as progress is made, so keep looking and commenting ;)

@forte I Think 2x2 should be fine, however, it might be a bit small for some armies and limits the movements possible too much, imo. You need to have options were to move, and not just "wait behind the wall, wait behind the wall--- FIRE!". That's why I dont Think we'll ever go smaller then 3x3. But since I'm building 24 tiles, it should be possible to have two games of ZM going with only the ones I have, and maybe even three if we do them 4x2 or something. I'll update tonight or tomorrow with the progress we made today. I have to say that I'm really into it now. All I want to do is play Zone Mortalis all day =)

I'm glad you're taking the time to document this. I never have time to play full on games of warhammer anymore, so it's really neat to see that little skirmishy games might still be in the cards.

My favorite part is the desktop's worth of computer scrap you have scattered around. Never realized how much that stuff looks like busted space hulk bits...

Totally agreed here, looks great - even ended up showing someone else your work pointing out all the parts... and to think I have similar kicking about all around.

Can't wait to see / read more about this, looks a great way to get in small games for quick fire fun.

@flint and infyrana: Thank you =) Makes me happy to hear that you like it. The computer parts kind of happened by chance. I found the bag containing my replaced comuter parts at my parents house, and brought it home. And then I just sat there, toying with the fan and happened to place it on the ZM-tiles. And there you go. I'm still trying to figure out a good way to get the actual circut-boards (I dont know if they are actualy called that, but yeah) into some kind of walls or flooring. Maybe in the next four tiles I'll manage that.

Anyway - with my friend Micke the Berzerker (you'll see why he is called that in the first pic) visiting last night, we got to detailing the five tiles already built, and gluing walls on the next four. Here are some pics:

Enought with the workspace pictures, and here are some more of the adventures of Squad Ludendorf.

Having managed to escape the Eldar on the second floor, squad Ludendorf started searching for their brave leader. The sound of plasma fire brought them into a large ventilation room and as they approaced they could hear the Ludendorfs voice calling challenges to the Eldar between blasts of his plasma pistol. Ever brave, the squad turned to corner and advanced in support of their leader.

  • 4 weeks later...

Having been away from hobby-stuff for a while due to the so called "real life" and commitments made there, I am now prepping for a mini-tournament we're gonna have at my apartement this saturday. 6 people, 500p armies. We, or I, set the following rules:

No Armour Value

Nothing with more then 3 wounds

No fliers

Regular FOC, but you only need 1 Troop. No HQ, and only 1 Troops. The rest can be elite, fast or whatever.

Then we adjusted unit size so that the minimum unit size became smaller, to acommodate cooler armies. =) 10+ became 5+, 5+ became 3+ and 3+ became 1+. Special/heavy weapon options remain the same, tough, but they count across the army. If I have, for example, 4 Grey Hunters I dont get to buy the melta. But if I buy two groups of 3, making the army total 6 Grey Hunters, I unlock 1 special weapon slot as in the codex, and I can then buy one meltagun and have in any of the two groups. Easy, right? =)

Also, I have decided to have a Teamleader for each army. That will be the model with the highest Ld, and if there are several with the same, the player picks before the game day. This is to make it possibe to have a "Slay the Teamleader"-objective as Secondary.

Anyway, I'll make sure to take pictures and post some bat reps of my battles. I'll either be using 500p of Chaos, with Typhus and loads of zombies, or, if I dont manage to convert and paint the 500p chaos force, I'll be using my SW.

To do this, I've written some missions, and to play them you need some terrain. So in addition to my ZM board, I've started building containers, walls and stuff that can be used to make a really packed battlefield for the weekend. Here are some pics of that, featuring Squad Ludendorf once again:

Thank you. =) Experimenting with doing some barricades now, as well. Since all battles this weekend will be small in scale, and in very thight boards with loads of terrain I need more stuff like that. Gonna build some guard towers as well, I think.

SW Turn 2

My 2nd pod didnt arrive, so I pressed the attack. The pod squad went into the missile silo, and the bikes and terminators went after some other targets. The shooting killed most of the screening termas, and I failed my charge with the Lord on bike. Mistake to shoot that much at them :P

The Land Raider and Terminators went for the exocrine, unloading the combi-plasmas into it and despite the 3+ cover from the venomthropes he died. Pretty nice for me, since my terminators would be dead mead otherwise.

The rhino squad, tried to revenge their fallen brothers and actually got the Hive Tyrant grounded, the plasma guns doing work. A full salvo from the Long Fangs later and he was a bloody stain on the ground. I felt good now, having taken out two of the most dangerous (I felt) things in his army. I was still worried about the warriors, especially when I failed the charge with the Lord, but yeah. I had a lot of stuff.

Nid Turn 2

http://imageshack.com/a/img4/6777/xgu5.jpg

His lictors came on, and targeted my Vindicator. It died, sadly. :P I think his devourer-termas came on as well, and he placed them behind my Long Fangs, ready to claim an objective and kill my heavy support. They got all but one of the Long Fangs and the Wolf Guard Terminator with shooting, so I still had 3 missiles at least. Then he charged his warriors into my bikes, mainly my Lord, and I challenged. Altough he had a better shot at killing the Lord with the rest of the rending attacks from the warriors, he opted to accept the challenge with his Prime, and my Wolf Lord smashed him to a pulp. =) The last poor bikes died, tough. No suprise  there.

SW Turn 4

With my 2nd pod coming along, I decided to rescue my Long Fangs as well as claim an objective close by. I killed some of the gaunts, but not all. They were 20 to start with, after all. In other news, I hunted the tyrant guard with my terminators, but was a bit too slow. Or they were too far away. The Lord killed some warriors, and actually lived. =) The first pod squad moved unto an objective, as did the rhino squad.

Nid Turn 4

The Mawloc appeared, killing the remains of the rhino squad, and thereby robbing me of one of the objectives. Then his harpy executed some more of the first pod squad. The lone survivor bravely stood his ground, tough. My Lord finally died to the warriors, and the last of his termagaunts moved a bit out of hiding, positioning themselves 8 inches away from the objective, ready to dart forward next turn. The unpainted Raveners in the lower pic are Venomphropes, and the pained ones are warriors.

SW Turn 5

Since this could be my last turn I just consolidated onto the objectives I had, and tried to shoot the warriors with the Land Raider. I got some of them, and the Wolf Guard Battle Leader and his remaining two terminators charged the warriors as well. The brave companions fell, however, to two lucky hits from overwatch and the WGBL had to charge on his own. He got stuck in, and killed a warrior, took no damage in return and locked them away from the objective. I also cleared out the last of his outflanking termagaunts, and took some pot shots at the harpy. No wounds on the flyer, tough. The lone survivor of pod squad 1 also had a standoff with the mawloc, as can be seen in the last pic =)

Nids Turn 5

As he didnt have a lot of stuff left, he did what he could. The Termagaunts leapt out of hiding, and unto the objective in the middle. The Mawloc went for the Land Raider, and the Harpy denied the lone GH the objective. He shot, and then charged him, but the man stood fast. =) Brave guy, born to be a Lone Wolf it seems. In close combat between the warriors and the WGBL I gutted another one, but to no avail. The termagaunts were already on the objective.

http://imageshack.com/a/img10/1048/pmi8.jpg

With that, the game ended and he claimed victory. Another turn and I could have easily contested the termagaunt objective or just killed them, and then I would have won. The score in the end was

Nids

Slay the Warlord (wolf lord)

Linebreaker (harpy)

First Blood

One objective (3VP)

Space Wolves

Slay the Warlord (Prime)

One objective (3VP)

Hope you liked it. Be sure to leave a comment or something =)

Great thread fella, I must ask third pic down....what is that nid? That looks awesome.
