Yeah, price appears to be about £85. Given I wanted to get Knights/Command bikes for conversions anyway, that nets a dark-talon for £20, cheaper than a storm talon would be and begging to be turned into a baroque Templar flyer. I think it's the best looking bundle I've seen in a while. Not sure my modelling skills can handle it, but we'll soon see!

Incoming Heresey: Just heard there is a Dark Vengeance 'expansion' which appears to be a bundle deal of 5 DW Knights, 3 bling-bikers and a dark talon... Can't help but wonder if they could be requisitioned to produce awesome TH termies, Chaplain biker/Command Squad, and perhaps even a storm-talon? I don't know the heretic model so well but it looks more jet-fighter than the talon and as long as it has I fit the right weapon loadouts...

Yep, check my confessors thread if you need to-- I've been doing just that with a dark talon and a ravenwing command squad.  The ravenwing bikes are a fantastic new source for an updated bike-- the only problem is the headlight faring.  You will need to get your hands on some old bike farings, and physically pin them onto the bike's frame.  I found that pinning though the back of the bolter (where it curves) into where the boter connects in the handlebar assembly is the best place for it.

I haven't quite figured out the assault cannon for the dark talon to storm talon conversion yet-- as traditional assault cannons like those on a land raider are a bit too large.

Do you have a link for this? My searches turn up nothing

Yeah I do: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/253082-diy-confessors-sicaran-and-caestus-updates/page-14

Haven't updated since before my birthday-- real life got in the way; but I'm back at the hobby table now!

Hope it helps!

Apologies, I meant for the new DV box rumors, pics etc.  However, I am jealous of your Sicaran and Caestus ;).  I'm saving up for a sicaran myself as that tank is amazing both in looks and rules!

I'd love both of those...

Pic wise, no, I don't have a link. The only link I saw was simply rumour, but I did catch a glimpse of the next white dwarf and it featured prominently ;) there is other stuff in there but the DA expansion is obviously the main interest over Xenos and Traitor extras.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I'm working away at my Dark/Storm Talon. Black Talon? Anyway, the plan is to use the heavy-gothic stone looking parts on the main chassis, but with the wings flipped and mounted low against the engine pods. I've mounted assault cannons in the nose, they aren't technically mounted on a 360* pintle but what can you do? Rule of Cool. The DA motifs on the missile pods will be removed and replaced with something more... Cross ;)

Basically I should end up with a slightly-more traditionally 'fighter jet' look, but still very grimdark 40k. As my crusade badge features the pheonix, I intend to keep the Aquila-pattern on the wings, but it will face toward the ground so that mortals and enemies alike can look up and know that the Knights of the Emperor are at hand.

Thoughts/suggestions welcome at this stage, as only the cockpit/body is fixed in place.

Your Black Talon intrigues me, I'm curious to see where it'll go.  My only concern is the mounting point for the wings was specifically designed for the wings to be mounted right side up, how are you going to circumvent that?

Also, as an aside-- thank you for taking the time to read through and comment on my thread, much appreciated brother.

No probs, it's inspiring work!

Not sure I could manage 6 :P The model is quite a bit more than the regular talon unless you really want everything in that DA expansion box.

I'm hoping to build a 'boom' inside the missile pod to attach a large 8mm flat magnet which will secure to one on the hull, below the 'strut' which normally attached to the wing. Once I have the fit secure, I can use plasticard to box-in any gap that remains. As it is, it's a surprisingly good fit.

Upcoming battle versus space wolves! On Wednesday I will be playing a probably 1500pt game against our hairier, smellier cousins. My opponent is only just getting back into the gaming side of things after several years, but he does have a passion for wolves and a collection that is probably larger than the actual chapter. (I exaggerate slightly, but he has at least a couple of the largest great-companies in their entirety). Although I know he favours lots of infantry/long fangs/thunder cats (I mean wolves), he could conceivably bust out an unbound list of 12 dreads, an imperial knight or any of the new bad-ass formations. He has never used drop pods before, but being a wolf-player, he has several. I think my only possible out-gunning chance is in the air, as I believe he only has a single air-wolf. So, anything I should generally avoid at all costs? Any must-take units? I gather from the last time this came up, TWCav are scary and should be dealt with at range wherever possible!

Guess no-one cares about wolves :P

Any-who, turned out to be a sly trick of the death-cult Eldar. (Opponent had to bail, new player instead). Thankfully I got a heads up, so I quickly threw together a last-minute list at 1500 pts:

Ah, the 1451 is just without the 49 point inquisitor ;)

It's a tad misleading the way it is formatted. My crusader squad is already brimming with power weapons so the tac squad will have to do without - they should be rapid firing stuff to death anyway. I've never taken a list with no Melta in it before! :P

Silly flimsy DE...

Watch out for the one thing most players seem to forget about when running vehicles against those xenoscum (including Tau and their silly ideals).

Haywire grenades. They will mess up a day. Aside from that, have fun with the flamer barbecue. I've heard rumors that Wracks and Pain Engines go nuts for some good BBQ.

Can't say I approve of the lack of LRC's, but I'm a vehicle guy, so I'm biased. Thankfully the Typhoons should be enough to wreck any D. Eldar vehicles tossed your way. Barges first, then the skimmers. Ah, good times..

There is in fact a dedicated LRC hidden in the text there, but I agree that only one is not enough. And weirdly enough, I didn't have to deal with any haywires! His list was roughly:

2x Ravagers decked with Lances

1x Raider with lance, archon, blasterborn

At least 5 venoms (it was hard to keep track) with blasterborn/warriors

2 very large beast-packs of chimera-beast things and razor birds?

1x wicked looking jet-fighter.

Wowsers, that was quite an odd game! First couple of turns were pretty funny. I took first turn and held initiative. Pushed towards left flank, went bold and drove the LRC straight for his lance-barges, flanked by a speeder and with the other hanging out to the right to pot-shot at venoms.

Dread and sternies dropped right in front of beasts/archon barge and started burning. The problem was, this guy is a tourney player and did a good job of bubble wrapping his vehicles with his beasts. I had decent enough success, but didnt manage to wipe ANYTHING, so no first blood. Missiles and Heavy Bolters, Assault cannons and heavy flamers, and not a single skimmer downed (jinking all over the place and cover-saves plus night fighting and warlord trait for stealth in ruins meant that everything survived well enough).

Fearing a devastating return of fire, I could only chuckle as over two full turns, 20+ lance weapons managed to miss or fail to scratch any of my armour. This abundance of ones also affected me, and I struggled to put out much in return. My big squad hopped out turn two and made a good charge into the largest beast squad, killing most and forcing te few left to retreat off the board. Unfortunately the enemy flyer came on and landed 4 large blasts dead on in the centre, putting out 30+ wounds which I proceeded to fail 15 of, losing the whole squad and a wound from the captain, who then fell to the rest of his shooting (leaving only a poxy force-multiplier inquisitor standing!) Bad error on my part, I half expected to not get them all into combat and to only hurt but not wipe the enemy squad. Paid the price :(

On a positive note, once again the ironclad was a beast, and totalled several vehicles and wiped several squads. At the end of turn 5, he had chased the enemy warlord to the edge of the table and killed the last of his bodyguard.

The LRC survived till the end of turn five, when it was unfortunately pen'd twice and immobilised for the second time (although it had already manage to shoot down the other ravager while unable to move :P)

The tac-squad whiffed their drop-shooting and got stuck in an attrition battle with the other beast-pack, which they eventually lost in turn 5 (by a small margin of survivors).

The speeders put out a few hull points, but nothing very tangible. My opponent pointed out that they did force a LOT of jink saves though.

The Black Talon performed well, coming in turn 2 and scoring kills and hull points while avoiding the enemy fighter. On turn 4 he flew off, coming back in on turn 5 with a fully-effective shooting run that killed another transport.

All in all, we both suffered a fair bit of 'well, that's not quite what I planned...' before the game really got tense. The 5th turn was the decider, and unfortunately the enemy had played very well, managing to keep his warlord alive (barely) by getting him into a random squad who tanked the wounds from the dread. Final tally was 10-8 to the Dark Eldar, although one more turn was all I needed to finish the warlord and his last ravager, plus his fighter would be forced to fly off the board and hand another point over, while he had only one other unit left capable of blowing up a drop pod. Very close game, and good fun!

It was really just the basic chassis put together, but I'm working on it some more today and will try and get a picture up later. :)

EDIT: actually, have these for now, it gives the general idea.

Ahhh, was not aware, I didn't total up the points, I just assumed that was the total force points value.

Ahhh, damn Eldar lances, that right there makes me miss our Blessed Hulls if nothing else.

Got to love cheesy Tournament players, kinda gets hard to switch off once you start playing like that, bad luck as well on the Voidraven coming in.

At least his lances ruined themselves by jinking everywhere so as not to hurt you I guess.

Personally I think a Storm Raven or a Fire Raptor would of really earned their points in the anti armour role and not too shabby in anti heavy troop either.

Sounds like a really good game though mate.

Yeah, it was definitely tight. I almost ran the 'raven, but it's currently set up as an armour-killer with MM/LC and consequently puts out fewer shots. I didn't have any trouble putting out the damage with the str 6-7, but it was the sheer volume of jink and stealth saves that confounded my attempts. I think I'd need a lot more assault cannons in the future for taking on a list like that. Maybe all dreads in pods, with some assault cannons and flamers? Burning open tops to hit the contents, then pumping out as many shots as possible to hope for at least one failed save! But how do you breach that bubble wrap? It was mighty effective.

And I don't think I could purely out-shoot him either. If he gets first turn, his lances *should* do a lot more damage than they did. And marines outside of a transport die a squad at a time to the number of shots he can put out from all the splinter cannons and rifles. It's a tough one, and I really think the only way to do it would be to load up on entirely heavy armour, expecting to lose a few.

The Black Talon, I'm looking forward to seeing more progress in this project. Back then I wanted to scratch build one: a stormtalon with DA wings + stormtalon lode out, adjusted to fit the model nicely. Luckily I abandoned that idea and I got two regular Talons instead (and saving much time).

Yours is truing out quite nice, though, I'm not yet sure way the wings are attached. On the shot from the top and front, everything looks superb. The last picture, from the side, worries me a bit. The wing seems to be attached too low to the engine part and appears rather flimsy. Maybe that's just the angle, maybe that's because the model isn't finished yet.

It's indeed attached low, the edge of the wing has a sort of 'angle' to it which nicely matches the angle of the bottom of the engine part. They sit flush to each other, and a little trimming of the edge of the missile pod allows it to 'connect' and sit flush to the side of the engine, just below the original 'mount' for the wings. This is where to magnet on the hull attaches to the one recessed into the missile pod. The small struts on the underside of the mount, and those on the top of the missile pods actually blend quite well. It needs some tweaking, and I still think I may use a little plasticard to 'box' this section in and make it look sturdier and more 'spesh-mareen.' Beyond that, the low wing profile is really the look I want. I'm rather looking forward to my next day off and a chance to do some more work on it!

The Tyranid threat has returned, stronger than ever. Acting-Marshal Guillaume Robért wants no mistakes this time; the master synapse creature must not be allowed to escape. He has acknowledged the assistance of a specialist from the Ordo-Xenos and will deal with this personally...

(Chapter Master w/ Arty, TH/SE

Honour Guardx5 w/ Banner in armour-busting Stormraven

Big Crusader Squad in LRC

Attached Xenos Inquisitor with Liber Heresius

Ironclad in pod, HFs and Deathwind

6-man tactical fire support, flamer/combi, drop pod, Deathwind.

5-man purge-team, 2xflamers, CCWs, drop pod

This should be a fun list to play, if all goes to plan!
