SW1's Scenery Project - Buildings on the way!

Cheers. Now just imagine a Zone Mortallis board with the grating detail on it.

Think that will be extra cool when I get to doing that part of the project! :D

Really nice work brother, scenery is something I'm really interested in starting up at some stage. This gives some great ideas that may have to be "borrowed" in the future. Just an idea for tubing or columns, if you know anyone in retail, the little plastic core's from visa machines look like having potential also the ones from pricing guns. As you can guess I hoard for future usethumbsup.gif

On the bases front I've had a bit of fun this morning. Went to pour using the new resin and found it's not the one I ordered. It's got twice the cure time so it's going to take twice the time to cast anything up.

However it's a lot lower viscosity so it's minimal if any bubbles and picking up an even better level of detail. :D

Here's the 1st casting:

I'll get close ups of the bases taken shortly.

Really enjoying having my hobby mojo back with lots of different projects on the go at the same time. Let's see if I can get a similar level of detail on the intact board sections I do to the bases. :p

Really happy with them. I've just tried spraying 2 of them so I'll see how it takes paint.

@AngelsAbsolute - Can do, it'll help recoup the cost of the mould so I can get more rubber to have more fun. I've made myself TDA sized ones and normal sized ones as well. Going to try getting the mould for the bike bases done before the weekend when I'm back in work and then the wife will be having our baby Monday by c-section. So hobby time will come crashing to a stop for a bit.

@deathspectersgt7 - Cheers I'm happy they turned out ok.

I've done the bases to learn how to cast as I've got this idea for some funky terrain I want to do but need to be able to cast a load of bits for it. As an added bonus I get custom bases for my armies as well so it's a bit of a win win situation. It's the reason why I grouped the bases with the scenery rather than as a separate thread.

As long as the weather holds I'll be getting some more work done on the Admec ruin tomorrow after the old school run.

Good job on those bases, and the painted section is really really nice work SW1 thumbsup.gif , may i suggest rivets in the plain sections of yours bases, like in your standard bases 5 and 6, but maybe small, in the meshed section maybe a little tedious but maybe worth the effort IMHO. Waiting for your next update.

Got a bit late yesterday but I did manage to finish off painting the mounting board and the 2 based I started.

Wanted to get more stuff sprayed this morning but it's raining a lot. So that's scuppered my plans.

Rain stopped for a short time so I managed to under coat the other 3 bases. Got them painted up pretty quickly:

Didn't manage to get the building sprayed but hopefully it'll stay dry enough to get them sprayed this evening after I get the eldest off to bed. Time for some Adventures of Tintin. :)

@MagicMan - cheers I'm enjoying doing them so all is good.

The weather has not playing ball so still no blast of black paint on the building. I'm going to spend the rest of the night hunting for things to paint for the ETL instead. :D

I've managed to spray both parts of the ruin in between rain showers. I tested colours on the smaller of the 2. It's going to need a respray but I think I've nailed the colours. I I've started on the bigger of the 2 parts. It's going to be all metallic with lots of washes a bit like the bases I've done recently. If the lights ok I'll get some pic's later.

Here's where I am currently with the scenery:

@recon0321 - It's foam board with the edges taped up with masking tape (it takes spray paint nicely and with stuff superglued on top of it it won't move). On top of that the squares are bits of a wooden blind chopped up. Same with the long strips. Chopped a hole in the centre of it and glued a piece of cardboard underneath after sealing the edges again. Glued lots of random pipe looking bits (straws , plastic rod, bits of pen lid chopped up) and then glue over the top a chopped up piece of grid made from one of those plastic mats you stick your pots on to drain. There was also extra detail added with bits of textured plasticard.

After doing one I could probably do a similar one in half the time. The next ones will be a bit different so will probably take longer.

Just caught up with this. Loving the building bases, consider that idea nicked. Also, your resin bases are really nice, a nice touch for admec models. Keep up the good work.

@old git - Happy I can inspire with the boards. Can't wait till I have enough for a full tables worth. Though it'll take a while it'll be worth it. :D

I decided to keep the colours muted and will have just a few small details with a bit of colour. For example the key pads and lenses will be red and possibly purple? Not decided 100% on that yet. Also I'll be weathering up all of my scenery at a later date so if you think it's looking a bit clean in the long run it won't be. I'll possibly be venturing into the world of weathering powders and such. So I'll need to pick a few brains on here for advice on that.

I've sourced some really dense foam board that was going to be chucked. So in the name of being green I offered to recycle it. ;)

Great work SW1, its coming great. I use for weathering verdigris for areas of copper/broze Jade green from vallejo, i made my own wash with this, even with drybrush with orange i stiple a bit the area previously.
For silver/iron metal areas i made rust with different tones of orange, sample: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/gallery/image/92424-alejandrinus-e-tenebrae-vow-26jpg/ , hope that helps.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got some 5mm A1 sheets of foam board this morning and a few sheets of card. Hopefully I'll be able to get a bit of time to do something with it soon. Got loads of ideas to try out.

I'm also considering using some 3mm foam board as the basis for some reinforced armour on my knackered rhinos.

Alongside the decent pile of A1 foam board in the hobby room, I'm slowly collecting the bits I'll need to build up the details I want on them. The wife has quickly got fed up of the building 'mess' so I've been instructed to tidy up the hobby room. So I take this as instructions to crack on with building some more scenery. After all she couldn't mean throw it out could she?!?!?!

Lol ... So expect a bit of movement on the scenery side of things soon or come find me mourning the loss of building material.

Much time has passed and there's been a distinct lack of hobby activity with baby and other RL things getting priority. :)

Seems like I'll now be getting some hobby time back. So time to dig out my rough plans and the foam board.
